Five DAF trucks not cleared to start
By decision of the sporting officials, the five trucks of Dutch manufactor DAF have not been cleared to start the 28th edition of the Dakar. The crews concerned are: those of: Hans Bekx (502), Gerard De Rooy (n° 504), Jan De Rooy (n° 506), Marcel Van Vliet (n° 523) and Hugo Duisters (n° 529).
According to the officials technical report the competitors of these vehicles don’t have the proper documents.
For these reasons, a jury of officials has decided after speaking to the competitors that based on a part of article 25.4 of the rule book as well as the whole of article 25P1 « every vehicle that is not in conformity can’t be cleared to start the rally. (decision of the jury of sporting officials) ». Article 25P2 B must also be taken into consideration. This decision was announced to the competitors at 15h20 and they now have an hour to appeal

First the daf trucks wheir ok than can't start the rally sounds like a bit bs to me.The kamaz trucks are hardly and they can get away whit anything is seems.
They cheated on the 2005 rally.
If they would have started they would kick some russian kamaz ass.

Who still have some fast trucks left with good drivers like anne kies whit his ginaf it's a beast of truk powered by cat engine whit 950 hp 18 liter displacement and monster torque figure of 3250 nm and ways in at 9500 kg thats very light for a truck.
http://www.huttenrallyteam.nl/img/2006/techniek/wedstrijdtruck.jpg
And the man truck of hans stacy
http://www.kiggenbv.nl/Team%20Exact.jpg
I hope they can kick ass.
Our best trucks are maby out of the race but whe can still win the truckclass whit the ginaf and the man truck.

The movie of the dutch proloog is shot at the eurocircuit in valkenswaard
famous of motorcross and rallyracing.
But whe still have 3 race trucks in the rally and some trucks for technical support
Next time whe will the win the truck class of the dakar rally.
Bekx and the team de rooy will be back for victory.

About the DAF trucks I agree rules are rules
BUT the way this disqualification went, was quite suspicious. There were lots of homologation issues. However at 7 December the DAF trucks of team de Rooy were homologated and declared reglementary legal. At 23 December the FIA suddenly told them the trucks were not completely homologated. The official of the FIA who declared the trucks legal at 7 December was now on holiday and refused to say something about it.
My big question is why would de Rooy and Bekx both build a truck which does not confirm the FIA rules? (they both build there own truck based on a DAF without any cooperation)

My favorite car is the hummer h3 of robby gorden that thing is fast.
I hope he beats the factory vw's and the factory mitsubishi's with his beast.
Here the tech specs of the hummer
Material: 4130 steel alloy space frame construction
Wheelbase: 120 inches
Track: 88 inches front and rear
Overall Length: 174 inches
Overall height: 65 inches
Weight: 4,500 pounds
Front Suspension: Double “A” arms with coil-over springs and specially calibrated, four position-sensitive by-pass shocks by King. Total vertical wheel travel 20 inches.
Rear Suspension: Semi-trailing lower arm with integral hubs, 934 series CV joints and stub axles by Kartek Manufacturing. King coil-over four-position shocks and springs. Total vertical wheel travel 20 inches.
Brakes: Four wheel disc ProAm brakes by Kartek Manufacturing. A special hand-operated “splitter” brake in the cockpit enables the driver to make tighter and faster turns by isolating the right and left rear brake systems
Steering: Robby Gordon Motorsports power-assisted rack and pinion. One turn lock to lock (37 degrees)
Fuel System: Twin fuel tanks, with Fuel-Safe fuel-cells carry 100 gallons of Regular Grade ASO mandated pump gas. Mileage varies according to conditions, but under the worst-case scenario the Hummer H3 can cover 500 miles without refueling
Jacking System: Twin Howe integral chassis mounted hydraulic rams can lift either side of the car to facilitate a change of tires or extracting from sand and/or mud
TIRES & WHEELS
Tires: Toyo Open Country M/T 37 x 14.50R15 (two spares are carried on board)
Wheels: Robby Gordon 15 x 6.5 alloy racing wheels with integral bead locks.
NAVIGATION
Navigation Aids: Twin Terra-Trip odometers with KVH digital compass, twin GPS, with ASO supplied Iritrac team navigation/locator units. Note: ASO GPS units are purposely limited in accuracy by the organizers to place a premium on the team’s navigation skills. By ASO regulation no communication systems of any type are allowed. The Iritrac system will allow viewers to follow the progress of the race in real time on the team’s website, Robby Gordon.com The Hummer is also equipped with an ASO required Belize satellite tracking emergency, homing beacon which, if activated, immediately disqualifies the entry.
BODY & INTERIOR
Body: Carbon fiber replica of the Hummer H3 made by Menards Engineering Limited in Oxfordshire, England. The two-place cockpit for driver and navigator is completely sealed, filtered by UNI and cooled by an engine driven-air conditioning system.
Seating: Twin Custom built MasterCraft buckets with Simpson five point harnesses. Driver and navigator also wear custom made Simpson fire suits
Electrical and Lighting Systems: Twin Pro-Comp batteries power a Milspec type, custom wired RayChem harness designed and fabricated by James Lin. Lighting by three Hella HIDs units on roof and two high beam/low beam Hella HID units on the front bumper with 55 watt street legal lamps.
Custom fabricated RGM/RacePak digital instrument panel allows monitoring of all vital systems.
ENGINE
Rear mounted, GM designed, fuel injected, normally aspirated, with alloy block and heads, 6.0 liter LS2 series V8, built by Russ Oblenes at GM Racing and specially tuned and mapped for desert racing by Scott Urshell of UMI in Phoenix Arizona.
The engine build specifications, with the exception of compression ratio and its wet sump, are almost identical to those used by GM Racing’s factory Corvettes to win the GT1 Class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, France, on three different occasions.
ASO regulations limit power by use of a sealed induction system using a 37mm inlet anulus. A four-gallon plenum feeds double filtered air to the engine. Bassani Headers with a single Magnaflow muffler keeps the engine within FIA mandated noise limits.
Cooling: Seven-gallon re-circulating through a Ron Davis radiator with two integral heat exchangers for engine and transmission coolant. Ten gallons of emergency coolant/drinking water are carried on board in two five-gallon containers.
The Hummer also uses UMI Racing Technology Mefi 4 engine management system and software along with UMI dash and data logger system
Motor dyno tuned by Todd Peterson and Scott Urshell
TRANSMISSION
5-Speed sequential Albins/Weddel manual shift transaxle. Power is fed through a multi-plate Tilton Engineering clutch assembly

I think it's about time to rename this topic and let it become the Dakar 2006 official topic ;)
BTW, I am watching it every day on several TV channels. In France they do some very good coverage :) and that Hummer, well, I love to see it in action! Too bad it is already out of the game for the top places :bah: but what a machine!

Go gorden i think he will be in the top 10 in the end of rally if have keeps it together and i think he is one to watch for the coming years.
Anyone kown some horsepower and torque figures for his ls2 6 liter v8 engine??
The good drivers of this rally are robby gorden carlos sainz and the x raid bmw team sucks(fast but fragile).
Best dutch is truckteam is the man of hans stacy i think he is one for the top 3 for the end of the rally maby for victory if he stays out of trouble.

so...a question fro ma dakar-noob...are cars like the peugeot 206 and the renault megane just purpose-built dakar cars with a bodykit to resemble road cars, or are they actually somewhat based on the road cars?? i'm assuming the mitsu and VW's etc are based on real cars??

The t1 class are cars mostly cars whit mostly stock and the things they need for the rally like modfied suspension setup bigger fuel tanks etc.
And the t2 class cars are purpose build cars for cross country rally's
highly modefied engines supension setup lightend etc.
Most cars in the t2 are losely based on production cars but have things like carbon bodyshell lighters doors
I believe this the street version for mitsubishi pajero evo rally version
perfect car for the is something like the pajero evo or other cars
Here are few links of the techinal regs for the t1 and t2 class
The bowler wildcat as used in the rally.

At km 250 of stage 9 between Nouakchott and Kiffa, on a fast portion, the Australian biker suffered a bad crash. and died.
Aware of the accident at 11:31AM, the rally headquarters immediately sent a medical helicopter that landed at 11:55 AM on the scene of the accident. The doctors unfortunately could only note the death of the biker that according to them struck immediately.

Really sad news, the Dakar doesn't get much coverage in Australia but this is definately in the news today. :(
Anyone aware of how many other Aussies are in the race, if any?

yester day night i turned on tv and changed channel to eurosport and commenter said " .... after this tragic loss news some stages cancelled". then i loged in to internet and i searched what happened. Then I read that sad news.
RIP Andy Caldecott
It is veery sad news and this is 3rd lost in this rally in two years. Race managers should make some changes in rally rules to stop this accidents.

I think that tomorrow's stage will define the overall classification because of the prohibition to fix cars.
Go Carlos Sousa!
