DVD is in MPEG-2, DivX and XviD are MPEG-4.

For DivX, basically it's just AVI with DivX codec for video compression and MP3 for audio. Same thing for XviD but with the XviD codec. There're other variations with other codec for audio but MP3 is the most compatibile and common one.
For compatibility, I prefer MPEG-2 over DivX and XviD even though my dvd player plays both of them. Just personal preference I guess.
