View Full Version : FIRST SERIOUS INJURY AS A RESULT OF JW
Jabba
12-06-2003, 09:34 AM
I have lost all feeling in two of my fingers since last Monday. I presumed it was some kind of cramp due to bad circulation or something and that it would go away in a few days.
Anyway I have now been told that I have suffered a RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) due to too much and bad keyboard use:
http://eeshop.unl.edu/rsi.html
In particular I have been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
http://www.cfpc.ca/English/cfpc/programs/patient%20education/carpal/default.asp?s=1
I will now probably require surgery to repair my tendon. I haven't even been to a doctor in 14 years let alone a damn hospital...so you can imagine how much I am looking forward to that.
Anyway I always thought all these types of injurys were bullshit and just another excuse to sue Microsoft...I can now confirm they are very real and not nice at all....
I have been working on keyboards since I was eight years old and I cant believe that this has happened to me now....especially as I was thinking about having another go with dragon naturally speaking (voice recognition software)...its one of those things that you never think is going to happen to you.....until it does....
Its taken me ages to type this out with one hand so I hope it might be a warning to the other heavy posters here...and of course expect alot less and smaller posts from me until my other hand has recovered. :( :( :(

:( :( :(
Sorry to hear that jabba. I have seen some very interesting keyboard designs that are supposed to aleveate the stress from keyboard use. Some are split in half and the keys are mounted vertically and you use it with your hands in a stright out position with your thumb up in the air like your shaking hands.
Good luck with your recovery.

I have also got a MS natural keyboard on one of my computers that I have been using for about 6 months...I cant help thinking that this might have been the thing that might have triggered it all off...

 We get them for employees that are suffering carpel tunel syndrome. The design is supposed to help since its made to keep your hand, rist and lower arm all in alighment.
Shit, my grandma had carpal tunnel syndrom since many years now :( she already got surgery more than once but the pain still come back every now and then :(... that suck to hear that Jabba...

I have been using it in a very bad way though so I guess I have only got myself to blame....can you carry on using the keyboard after you have had the operation for the carpal tunnel syndrome fishfreek ??

Once you recover from the physical surgery part yes you can continue to use the keyboard.
You might be given a rist brace or they might go as far as to try to teach you the 'proper' way to use the keyboard.
On thing that helps is to take breaks. Type for a few min and then rest your arms and hands off the keyboard for a period, etc.
All carpel tunel really is is tendonitus of the rist/hand. Simular to the ol tennis elbow.

All kitty killers have had that in some point of their life.

While I have one hand and a mouth you will always hear from me....I think it would be taking the piss a bit to ask for a keyboard in the recovery room though.

Sorry to hear that jabba, hope you get well soon. This got me thinking a bit... maybe I really should get a better chair and table. It sometimes hurts to use the keyboard and mouse, maybe it's a sign that I may get rsi in the future :( Luckily, usually resting for few days will cure all the pain. I've threw away the stupid gel wrist pad since then, that seemed to solve half of the problem. Like the site says, don't rest on the wrist pads, they're bad!
Thanks for the info on the matter, seems like I've been doing most of the things right except for the sitting position and "rest". Guess I better go get a proper chair with better support this christmas. Any of you got any good suggestion as to which type of chairs is good to prevent RSI.. hopefully it's not too late. Don't want to leave all the nice people at JW you know.
Get some rest jabba. Looks like I should do the same for at least couple of days too... all the coding from last week has been giving me a sore wrist (no, not the kitten killing!). Time to force myself to stay away from the computer and do some dead-tree reading.
Jabba, you should try to get a hot female physiotherapist to teach you how to do http://eeshop.unl.edu/s_sr.gif :) That should speed up your recovery!

Sorry to hear you've gotten Carpal Tunnel man, that sucks. I hope the operation to correct it goes well!
My mother got Carpal Tunnel from work (from typing), she had the surgery and she is all fine now. She says every now and then it'll cramp up a bit, but it's not too bad. Hell, she has the same job, she has one of those special keyboards now too.

It's amazing to hear that so many people have suffered from this. I would recommend getting Dragon voice recognition software
you won't believe how much easier and how much time it saves making posts on here. I doubt I will be going back to full keyboard use even after my hand has been fixed now.
I had one of the first voice recognition programs available to the wide public maybe 6 or more years ago, and I remember it was already pretty good after some "training" :D

12-06-2003, 06:35 PM
Is the MS natural keyboard really that good? Tried using one a while back, it felt kinda weird. Guess if it really help reduce strain, it's well worth the effort to adapt to a new keyboard.
Good to hear voice recognition is working well for you, so you'll be making twice the number of posts now? ;)

Yes they have come on a lot since I last used version 5 and also a faster processor helps it guess the correct sentences. I am using it along with my mouse and the keyboard every so often with one hand and it seems to be a great combination. I don't think you could really control the whole PC with voice recognition but for typing posts it's definitely much quicker and of course the spelling is going to be accurate as well.

I only have version 6 at the moment and the single word recognition is crap but it's very very good at recognising whole sentences so I guess it has some artificial intelligence built in there somewhere now.

Maybe dragon naturally speaking is having problem recognizing non american accent?
Jabba
12-06-2003, 06:48 PM
It has language options now French Spanish British etc... I could probably spend more time training it but for now the level of accuracy definitely makes it quicker not slower than typing.... even with one or two hands in my case.

I had to go through all the voice recognition bullshit this summer after I got repetitive strain in both wrists (8+ hours computer stuff at job plus regular stuff when I got home was overdoing I guess hah). I didn't expect it at all until it came on strong. It sucked but after taking a break for about two months and making some changes (ergonomics, stretching if I know I'm typing for a while) I'm pretty much better. Still, it sucks that you have to go into surgery. Unfortunately it may be up to six months until you can really get back into things. Good luck with everything.

Urgh! This sucks to see, Jabba!
I did have a friend that went through some ops for CPS, and if it does make you feel better, he did recover, like maalox did. Of course, since he was a net addict, keeping him away from the keyboard for the 3 months was a nasty business. It's unbelievable the extents his wife went to keep him away from the keyboard....
No, not THAT. Dirty people....

Sorry to hear you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. From a medical point of view (I study medicine) quite a lot of people have had it. Did you have surgery for it yet? They cut a ligament, which is a sort of strap around your wrist. The strap presses on your nerves and that's why your fingers tingle. The operation is fairly easy and complications are slim. The only setback is that it can come back, but in most of the situations it doesn't. Anyway I wish you all the best and if you want info you can't get from the internet just ask. Good luck!
Damn that sounds bad.. Sorry to hear that Jabba.. Hope it will be ok as short as possible..

This is bad news Jabba. It's one those things that makes one realise all the things we take for granted. I hope your surgery will go well and that you recover soon. Good to see that it won't stop you from "post whoring" here! That Dragon software sounds nice (can it scroll down internet pages as well?). Maybe it's something for me too, because sometimes I can feel a little pain in my shoulder when I've been checking JW out. It doesn't stop me from visiting this site all the time though.

Thanks for asking....I had a course of steroid injections and a course of anti inflammatory tablets....combined with a massive reduction in posting on JW and uploading videos...I would say that I am almost 95 % cured....its the rest I think more than anything that helped...and also a different keyboard and chair.....I think sometimes its a case of being patient and letting your body recover before diving right in with the knife....

03-10-2004, 08:42 AM
see i knew surgery wasn't necessary. there really are exercises you can do though, i just can't fuckin remember them. and i guess sometimes yanking your cranker properly may or may not help, i'm told it supposedly promotes good hand-wrist-forearm alignement and muscle build up or some shit, either that or it was an instructors attempt to make a good excuse for masturbation
