After deleting a file I dump the bin and the file dissapear form there but bin still have image that its full, in explorer the size of free disc space is same as before the deleting as its still in the bin.
When I try to dump the bin again it says "you really whant to remove WINDOWS file?"

Wtf is wrong with it? :(

On your hard disk look for a hidden file called "RECYCLER" (thanks for the caps warning Jabbasworld :) ) open this and you should see another hidden file called "S-1-5-21-" with a whole heap of other numbers following this.

This is where windows moves any files that you put into the recycle bin. See if the files that you are trying to delete are still listed here. If they are then try highlighting them and pressing shift+enter. A dialogue box asking you if you want to permanently delete the selected files should pop-up. If you confirm this the check that the file has gone. If the files still have not gone then you could try deleting them through a third-party shreddder (there is one in spybot search and destroy).

As to why your computer is acting in this way I'm afraid I have no idea.

See if just going shift+delete gets rid of files normally, although it can be a bad habit as when you realise that you actually wanted that file its a lot harder to get back.

The blind leading the blind.

Deleting a file on a modern MS Windows system will simple "mark" the file for deletion so yo ucan undelete things you accidently deleted.

This is all by design.

So - you delete a 200mb AVI - and your free space is not 200mb more?

That is because the file still exists - it is ust "marked" for deletion.

If you move your mouse cursor over the Recycle Bin that has items in it, and right-click, select "Empty Recycle Bin" from the menu.

This will now finally delete the file.

Windows by design will ask your one more tome to confirm youwant to erase the file ;)

If you have multiple files in the Recycle Bin, it will ask to confirm the "Multiple File" delete... similar thing if they are system files you choosing to purge from the Recycle Bin.

Think of it as if you put somthing in the kitche trash can, you can still retrieveit but once you empty the trash can into the city garbage dumpster - it's gone.

This is all bt design folks...;)

Anyone ever bother to RTFM? ;) Or maybe even hit the F1 - Help key? ;)

And what part of what you just said did I not know? Thanks for stating the bleeding obvious RC

So any idea of why emptying the recycle bin does not actually delete the file?

the simpliest way: DO NOT use the recycle bin  . I use Windows Commander all the time, so I nearly don't know, how to use windows folders  and when I want to delete something, just press Shift F8 and everything is gone for good

And what part of what you just said did I not know?

Actually everything... why would you need to navigate to the hidden GUIDed folder inside the Hidden Recycle Bin to do anything?

You are I am sure away that the GUI Recycle Bin is a simply a Explorer.exe SHell Extentsion Shotrt-cut alias to that exact locaiotn on the hard drive. :)

Why on earth would any one tell someone who obviously is needing some healthy advice an "under the hood route' to mess around with something that has a very simple GUI interface. ;)

Chap - I know you young bucks get all pissy when old-age fukcers that are almost forty try tell you something about computers - but I been turning wrenches under the hood of Windows and other OS's since you were in diapers.. ;)

Permissions my dear chap, permisions.. ;)

If you are on a shared system - then each user will have their own GUIDed hidden folder with "deleted files".

If you navigate to the GUIDed recycle bin folder for another user, emptying the Recycle Bin won't remove something from another users bin ;)

This is why the Home edition of anything just plain sucks.. ;)

Use XP Pro or Win2KPro and run as an administraor... problem solved . ;)

I use PRO one RC

If you move your mouse cursor over the Recycle Bin that has items in it, and right-click, select "Empty Recycle Bin" from the menu.

I am not that dumb  when I do so it delete the file, BUT trash can image is still like its full(open a bin and theres nothing) and dics space is just like it is not deleted, doing "empty trash bin" again it says "do you really wanna delete file WINDOWS?" :? Thats what is strange and wrong.

Btw the problem is 3-5 days old, never happend before. Windows updated about a week ago with last service pack.

I've got absolutely no problem with you knowing plenty of stuff, regardless of whether you are 18, 22 or 102, its quite clear that you do know plenty. I do have a problem with you saying that others don't know anything and then making a post of the most obvious crap that everybody already knows. If you want to say that others are blind then back it up with something useful that the supposedly blind person does not know.

Incidentally the fact that his computer was moving the files but not deleting them implied to me that he would be able to get rid of them through the method that I mentioned. For his sake I hope that somebody can give him a way of fixing the problem permanently, however in the mean time my way would allow him to free up HD space.

Such as this

But preferably give him the solution at the same time i.e. how to repare them back to the way they previously were  .

Yes we are - we have livened up this dead forum with a little colour and action. ;)

BTW - does your system have more than one drive? If so - you might see if the option to maintain seperate Recycle Bins per drive is on. This may help explain why emptying the bin doesn't free up space.

Also - the space might be being taken up by temp files else where.

Or maybe the previous recycle bin of a previous non-admin user account you might have used s using the space - or it could just be hidden pRon files :P

I have disc with disc C and D only, sigle PC. It worked ever since without any problems just happening now from some srange reason. I was asking cause maybe someone know how to fix it windows :?

RC45

So what exactly is the problem?

You have a file in the Recycle Bin that won't go away?

You don't get back space when you empty the bin?

ARMAN
11-13-2005, 10:40 PM
Yes, I dont get back space, the bin is empty if you look in it but the bin image shows that there is something inside(if you know what I mean) and when you do "empty.." for second time it asks "do you really what to delete file WINDOWS?"(the bin is empty) if I click "Yes" it gives me error "File Dd2 cannot be erased. Check if disc is protected from rewriting or if it is not in use" :| then I hear deleting sound and bin image is still that it have something inside :?

Maybe mom was surfing thru the net and cliked on something :?

Test out the mechanism.

Copy a some largish files to a temp folder.

Delete and then open the Recycle Bin to see the files that were deleted - then right click empty and observe them get removed and then the space should be reclaimed.

Once we have verified that things are working as expected in a controlled test - we need to investigate why the Windows folder would have appeared in the Recycle Bin in the first place ;)

Deleting a file or files that is protected my the Windows File Protection (or what ever it is called this week ;)) will not recover space - and it is possible what ever you are trying to affect is such a file.

Well... today theres no invisible "windows" file left in bin its just empty(and image of bin is as it is empty) after dumping BUT the dick space is STILL not released :? It releases after reboot only.

Yesterday I have cleaned the crap out everything all teporary folders and cookys and stuff and it still have this bug :x
