Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far
Last week when I was testing the latest version of RootkitRevealer (RKR) I ran a scan on one of my systems and was shocked to see evidence of a rootkit. Rootkits are cloaking technologies that hide files, Registry keys, and other system objects from diagnostic and security software, and they are usually employed by malware attempting to keep their implementation hidden (see my “Unearthing Rootkits” article from thre June issue of Windows IT Pro Magazine for more information on rootkits). The RKR results window reported a hidden directory, several hidden device drivers, and a hidden application:

If it is true Sony is going to be so in debt from lawsuits they'll go backrupt. It is illegal to snoop the contents of your computer without you being notified and consenting. In the same way it's illegal to break encryption. I'm not sure it's true.. Time will tell. If it is I'd suggest a class action lawsuit will net some lawyer a good deal of money.

no don't buy anything from sony, even one dvd layer cake i think had some form of new protection (no problems still copying of course) Honestly they should just give up, such things are always cracked and so long as the majority are prevented from copying huge amounts it's unlikely to hurt them significantly commercially, PR disasters such as this do. Just like the cd's that wouldn't play/ crashed pc's what a way to alienate fans!

:? :( i seem to remember something about Philips... the company that owns the patent on CD's has the ability to sue for inability to conform to the CD format while retaining the CD logo.
i own one cd that wont even play in my PC... and that was definately the last 'new' cd i bought... i have purchassed others that are pre-DRM since.
interesting read for sure. thanks for posting the link RC :)

Funny how they leftout the fact that alot of the bands on Sony/BMG got pissed off about it. I wouldn't be surprise if this desicion is ased on threats by those bands to leave the label.
Sony screwed up big this time...
