Vehicle Description
Dago Red is an North American Modified P-51D 'Mustang'
Manufactured in 1944 Military # AAF-44-74996
Wingspan 34 ft Lenth 32 ft 3 in
Race Weight 9500 lbs +/-
Engine Modified Merlin V12 1650 cubic in
Horsepower 4000 +
Dago Red was first introduced to the air racing scene in 1982 - where the creation of Frank Taylor, Bill Destefani, Pete Law, Bruce Boland, Mike Nixon, and the other talented folks at Chino had turned the wreckage of N5410V into a racing thoroughbred. Taking from the best of other racing aircraft like "Jeannie" - the goal was to make this racer as light, as aerodynamically clean, and as fast as possible. Less than a year after the project started, Dago Red was soon destined to make an indelible mark in air racing history, and do so much earlier then anyone could have predicted. During her first appearance at Reno, pilot- Ron Hevle captured the #1 qualifying position in Dago Red and went on to win the first heat race as well as the Gold Championship Event. No other aircraft since the rebirth of air racing at Reno had ever accomplished such a feat. Since that time, Dago Red has gone on to establish herself as one of the fastest racing aircraft ever to take to the pylons, posting the fastest qualifying speed ever recorded by a P-51 Mustang at 492.722 MPH and the fastest recorded race speed of 507.105 mph as well as being the current 15Km speed record holder at 517.06 MPH and current 5-time consecutive National Unlimited Class Champion. From the beginning, Dago Red was a champion born of championship heritage - and continues to this day exhibiting "The Winning Spirit" she & Team Dago Red have come to signify.
The things you find on ebay these day's.

I think this paintjob looks better the old airforce paintjob looks boring to me.
But this is way faster than ay other p51 mustang or most prop planes on earth for that matter and thats what counts.
I don't care much about the looks of a aircraft as long as ít's fast.
:D :o

But this p51 is faster than jet airliners of today.
Give me the p51-d dago red any day.
The jet fighters of today are boring more computers than plane.
You can race and fly airshows whit dago red you can't run a f15 witout a full workforce you don't need many people to run a p51.
Jet fighters are boring.

mabey to you; but jesus... how is 9g boring? how is climbing to 50,000 ft in a minute boring? what about running accute formation at 500 mph at 100 ft AGL?
have you even seen a modern air show? and you are just plane incorrect that the p51 doesnt need a large workforce to maintain it; albeit, it is smaller, but still just as nessisary for safety/reliability.

You don't need a jet fighter to pull 9 g or more most good aerobatic planes can pull that.
You ony need only private pilot licence to fly dago red.
Cars are not my only passion i love fast planes motorbikes etc.
And yes i have been to a airshow(redbull airrace in rotterdam).

i agree that acrobatic planes are very cool, but not much compares to 120,000 rpm and 50,000 + kg of thrust, vectored thrust.... no to mention 30 inch LOCAS aircraft with a Turbine the size of a nerf football making 160,000 rpm...
aircraft w/ props and reciprocating engines are quite limited in ability... they may sound great in the racing aircraft, but pushing the limits of technology requires moving forward... turbines, and later, scram jets with no moving parts.
i love aircraft myself to quite some degree; but i much prefer what lies ahead more then the past... but i quite like the past too.

This the past mixed whit 21 century engineering and technology.
Btw at reno they fly 500 mph+ 50feet above ground(15,24 meters.)
Thats what i call flying.
And their where some racing aircraft in the scene but the all crashed.
Like burt rutan's pondracer.

this topic evolved into propeller vs jet powered aircrafts
anyway , both get your adrenaline running fast , the only thing is that they are doing it in different ways , both are fun , but let`s face it , not any acrobatic pilot can be a fighter pilot , but for a fighter pilot it`s a pice of cake to do air acrobacy

The unlimted class planes are like the ferarri f1 team of the sky.
And they go like hell and are as sexy as madonna in the younger years.
You won't find sexier planes anywhere on the planet.

Well prop aircraft (unless they can greatly reduce the weight of turbine engines) will always be more manueverable than jet air craft. Especially since jet aircraft are built around speed they need wings that are built more for speed than manueverbility. But don't get me wrong that thrust vectoring has improved modern jets greatly but none can roll amd change direction like an aerobatic prop plane. It seems your obviously more into speed than turning ability with your choice of the SR-71 which is meant to fly straight and fast, it's still a dam good choice though :D .

I have a cool idea the unlimted gold class planes vs the current jetfigters (f16 and f15 tornado)and the must race round a racetrack like reno or something similar.
Jets are slow round the reno airrace track.
Jets are for kids.

in a fighter, the advantage goes to whoever can go the fastest, turn the tighter radius, and kill from the greatest distance. the prop is severely outclassed by 1950's jets in every way.
stunt planes are one thing, but unlimited class racing in a circle is something else entirely.

I prefer the term hot rodded and i looks way better than any stock mustang.
But the performance is what counts more not the looks.
Dago red strega and the huntress III look sexy like angelina jolie and britney spears like a well build woman.

They run jet fighters class at reno but they are slower than the unlimted class.
Would be to enter a few supersonic jets like f15 f16 etc.
And compare the lap speed to the unlimted class.
:D :o
