View Full Version : Lap Record - Radical at the Nordschleife - Now With Video
Everyone already knows that back in 2003 Radical took one of their limited edition SR3 Turbos to the Nurburgring, and on their one and only flying lap set a time of 7m19s with Phil Bennet at the wheel.
Now the rumour (yet to be confirmed) coming back from Germany is that today, with Michael Vergers driving, a production Radical SR8 in full road trim has lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in......

The SR8 should be as road legal as all other Radicals, but I think you might be right about the truck
I would like to see and hear a vid of that car, I heard the sound of that car must be phenomenal
Why doesn't someone just put lights and plates on a Leman P-class car and shut these extremely single purpose cars up for good.

As JC said when the Renault F1 car did a sub 1-minute lap at the TG trap, if it doesn't have a cup holder it isn't a regular car/road car.
Here's an audio clip of the engine revving, it's quite nice http://www.radicalextremesportscars.com/news_folder/v8_sheruns/00004.MP3

well, i was thinking something similar... but with Group C cars of the 80's/early 90's... perhaps a reworked Dauer 962 road car???

would you consider a cgt a "streetable-user friendly car" rc?
some ppl wouldn't.
allright.... i RETRACT that statement.
after looking at the pics. its a race car.
any car that cannot last at least 150-000 miles is not a street car in my mind.
this could be considered a "track car you can drive there with"

haha yeh.. their definition of full road trim is lights, numbers plates and passign emission tests.. that doesnt stop it being a full on track car

It looks even a faster lap than in that video with Uwe Alzen driving a competition Porsche :o

Fantastic showing by Radical, they've really been cutting their lap times down. Didn't the SR3 do it in like 7:15 or something? Sure they tip-toe the edge of road legal, but that's fine by me, i think it looks and sounds great. Not that you wouldn't feel like an ass driving that around town, though, even with a helmet disguising you.
Thanks for re-hosting the video, Dan :D

Hand built in the UK :)
The differences between a road legal and track only version is quite large, most noticeably the road legal version doesn't run on slick tyres, has higher ground clearance and less downforce.
I've been lucky enough to have passenger rides in a Supercharged SR3 and it was simply awesome.
Nice record :)

Who fanices taking it through the local traffic "calming" (read stopping non UK members) that appears in nearly every town now :P Still its an awesome achievement and i bet you could have a hell of alot on fun on road in a radical :D

My guess is that the SR8 will come close to -or even break- the magical 7-minute barrier on the Nordschleife.
See (http://www.motorworld.net/forum/showthread.php?p=323759#323759), I told you guys so last year... :P
Seven minutes sounded fast to me, but to actually see it from an onboard point of view is really amazing!
In case the links don't work, try these two:

Your point? A Formula Renault with lights and license plate would be quicker.
The Radical is a single purpose track day car - and really does not do the term street car justice.
A Lotus 7 based car at least is based on a once popular actual street car - Group C/Prototype/CanAm like cars are no more "street cars" than a double-decker bus is a large station wagon.

unless your name happens to be Dauer  then the 'road' car compromise was in the 962's ground effect, suspension, interior compfort, and rear wing d/f... and since the race car that was based off a road car that is based off a race car was ultimately a worse performing race car... but still a winner :P

Maybe but adding lights and a License plate doesn't make a race car road legal

Uhm - in many countires it does. The UK apparently being one of those.. as with Germany ;)
:)
Face it - the Radical is not a "road car" but rather a street legal race car. :)

Yeh its not terribly hard to meet the SVA test requirements, but still a slightly different radical could be a blast as a weekend car, not saying this is the one you'd use onroad, but i'm pretty sure the majority of cars tested there aren't ideally set up for road work. Its a great achievement from a relatively small company of talented people, lets not take it away from them :P

Oh - not taking anything away from them - just being realistic - the "road trim global market street legal version" needs to be run to put it in the same light as the M3 and F-cars and stock P-cars (and Vette ;))... :P

As long as people don't drive their Radicals all the way from the UK to the Nürburgring to do some laps, this figure is solely interesting for the stats.
Don't get all hung up on the discussion though, enjoy the video and the car for what it is: a very impressive piece of kit lapping the most beautiful track on earth at an astounding pace. Works for me... :P
^^^^^ - a Dutchie using the phrase "a very impressive piece of kit " is far more impressive than any sub minute lap of the 'Ring... ;) :P hehehe

exactly.. it always makes me laugh that they market such cars as road legal / road version etc, because they are useless on the road.. as soon as you come to a sleeping policeman (speed bump) you're screwed - therefore the vehicle is not capable of doing the job its been represented as

LOL! Sleeping policeman, very funny!
Anyway, you can also turn it around. Isn't it ridiculous that local authorities can litter the cities with obstacles that can't be negotiated with a car that has been approved by a national government service? That isn't just the case with cars like the Radical or the XT, but with lots of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches etc as well.
