i was just wondering how many of you are Linux users?

I've been using Linux for the past year and i have to say, it'll be impossible to convert me! There are a few things that has to be done:

More programs will have to be geared towards to nix platform.

Programs are easily installed and configured. Most times i had to compile the program myself and i hated that. Sometimes you wait minutes just to find out there are millions of errors just because you mispelt an environent variable.

Hardware manufacturers must provide support. How sucky would it be if you spent $1000 on a piece of hardware and no one has written drivers for it.

I'm sticking to MS until things are changed. I know there are many distributions and somtimes its necessary to compile code but thats the inconvenience of Linux i don't like. Sure MS are still dominant, money hungry and Bill Gates is the founder. But its easy to use. I'm a confident PC user but just a lazy one! Also i'm not a hardcore programmer so writing drivers for myself would be impossible.

However, the plus side is using them for servers. My company made a switch from MS products. I had a glimpse of the logs and it confirms that Linux based servers can run for thousands of hours without a reboot.

This is my experience and maybe someone elses experience is different. if you know a way to make Linux just as easy to use a Windows then let me know!

I use it every day for the servers I run.. and its great for that, I love the fact there is so much software available for free (unlike windows server where everything costs $$$), but as my everyday home OS no way, I'll be sticking to windows thanks

With many of the "free" (whatever definition they want to use) Linux programs available in Windows, there's really no need to use Linux for desktop. I'm running things from PHP and Apache to GIMP on my win2k box and I'm happy about the performance.

On the other hand, I do have couple of rarely used Linux machines in my room

Dan is that ET screwing some blonde?

Linux was designed by geeks for geeks as a server or workstation. It was only recently that real strides were made to make it easier for your run of the mill Windows desktop/laptop users to use. Linux has a sufficient number of apps to run on it though it is severely lacking in entertainment titles. I read a WSJ article mentioning that Vista will be much better than Windows XP. We'll only know if it is true once Vista's on our desktop.

Nice thing about Linux is the stability & security it brings to the PC platform. Not to mention it would make a perfect office desktop if and only if the org's sysadmin is really competent.
