I was riding on Lake Shore Drive home from work (it's pretty much an 8 lane highway with a 45mph speed limit) and i was in the far right lane when a red suv decided that he wanted the same spot i was in and the only other option was the guard rail. The guard rail won and so did the asphalt. I flipped at least 4 times banging my helment against the ground each time (i LOVE helments) and slid quite a few feet getting road rash on my right forearm and right shin. I probably hit the ground at 35mph so i was able to get some braking in before i hit. 2 firetrucks and an ambulance showed up and the bike didn't start back up so it got towed and i went to the hospital. A few bandages later and i'm back home, and i've learned that Lake Shore Drive is a death trap for bikers. It's a 01 Katana (can of tuna) so the frame actually looked like it was in good shape, thats when a steel frame comes in handy you Katana haters  .

I really hate when that happens. So were you wearing a jacket, and it wore thru? or were you in a tshirt? I am glad your injuries were so few, it could have been alot worse. Yes durability is about the only thing steel frames are good for, as I found out crashing my bike:-/ well good luck with the recovery!

damn you're lucky you didn't get run over on Lake Shore drive and only going 45 on LSD? I'm usually running 60+ on it with traffic (I never take it during rush hour)
where was it?

First and foremost, glad to see you made it out relatively ok. It's situations like yours where I try to explain to people the importance of a helmet and gear. You never know when or what could happen, and it's best to dress for those "what ifs" that could always happen. If you didn't have on a helmet those four times your head hit the ground.....

Katanas are built like tanks. Your bike will be back and running in no time, I'm sure. I have a friend with a Katana that he has crashed quite a few times and it is still running. It looks like a streetfighter now, but still running. :D

Glad to hear you are ok

BTW, do you ever hang out at Maximum Suzuki forums?

It's a great resource for Kats, Bandits and DRs

I'm TJ_DR650 on the board.

Ofcourse the SUV driver didn't stop, that would be too nice. The only people that stopped were some folks from out of town and the SUV driver got away. I was wearing jeans (very torn up and bloody) a t-shirt from work, and a back pack which helped out a lot. I'll take pics of the bike today when i see it at the auto pound, and it happened just after the Belmont exit going north. Thanks for all the support, hopefully i can get those pics soon. I usually don't browse bike forums because so much people bash the Katana and it kind of got annoying, it was a starter and one hell of one. I'll stil ride but possibly avoid Lake Shore Drive.

note to self: get a heavy stick to bash in the windows of cars who try to steal your spot on the road if you get a bike.

Glad to hear you got away in one piece..with the exception of the few inches of pavement we can now clone you from
that is definetly one of the things that scares me about getting a bike. I haven't had road rash since i was 12 and caught a squirrel in my front wheel :? (still dont' know how the little bastard timed that :? )

anyhoo, hope you can get back on your bike soon.

bicycle bike, or motorcycle bike??
when i was younger, and fearless; i found myself doing things i likely wouldnt even think about these days on bicycles. if anybody's been to Petoskey, MI, there is a rather large hill on M31 going from the casino towared the hospital/downtown that i would do high speed runs on... once a car popped out of a gas station, and iw as about to hit, so i turned hard right, and didtched the bike... slid nearly 80 ft. before coming to a stop. (no helmet) i got up, washed myself off in the gas station, and rode the bike home. not nearly as bad as what happened to gob3s, and corpse_grinder...

it was on a mountain bike down a really steep hill in my old neighborhood. little shit came darting out of the hedges i was barreling down the hill next to and was unlucky enough to time it so that his head got caught in the spokes. when his fuzzy body got whipped around and hit the forks, i went down :? his neck was broken i think and the spoke he caught had bent a little so i just punt kicked his lifeless carcass over a fence, walked my bike back up the hill and rode home to clean off. Luckily it was only my arm that got the brunt of the pavement since i wasn't wearing a helmet.

damn! sorry to read this man. I guess nobody got the suv's plates.
and those are little chunks of skin you lost considering the crash.
now I got that sensation of red skin just by seeing your pics :| . I complained when I burned my skin, but now I won't do it anymore after your pics

Honestly, when i keep hearing updates on New Orleans, i feel like complaining is the last thing i should be doing. So i'm very willing to take this type of pain because it could have been a lot worse. Thanks a lot for the support.
