EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

You have to love it when a political activist, whose been off searching for a photo opportunity first in Iraq and now New Orleans, proves he's a complete moron. I only wish someone had had the forethought to video tape him scooping water out of his boat with a plastic cup.

Per the bystandered:
"How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

The mans looking for a photo op, whether he helps anyone or not. The man has his personal photographer with him.. I mean come on.

Helping= good.
Behaving in the way hes behaving makes its highly likely the real rescuers will have to save him in addition to the people who actually need it.

Whats the difference between Penn and some news correspondent? Oh, He's trying to help.

If he plugs his boat. (hehe)

but sucks if something like that would hapen to you.
I wouldnt create a rescue team with an entorouge and a personal photographer and plan the thing so little as to leave the plug out of the bottom of the boat (in other words if I had to bail my boat it would be because it leaked, not because I forgot the plug). Then again I'm trained for emergency response and he isn't...

Say what you will but at least he's trying to help.

Thats what I tought.
There is bunch of shitholes who just talk crap all the time and never move a finger to do anything. And any publicity is better than no publicity when you are an actor.

See the thing is, if it were about helping people we'd feel differently. But this same tool just went on a tour of Iraq about a week ago promoting himself there. If he saves anyone I'd be suprised. Hes there to be there and get publicity. Thats what makes him a tool.
In fact, people on the seen implied no one else could have even really fit in the boat:
Penn allegedly attracted criticism from onlookers when they saw the boat was already crammed with Penn's entourage - including a photographer - before any flood victims climbed onboard.

Its like the guy who exploits a poor situation or a poor person for money. They deserve what they get.

If he really cares that much.. Donate alot of money to the cause so people who are trained in search and rescue can do their job, and don't tell anyone. Let donating the cash be its own reward. Rather then insert yourself untrained into a situation you very well might make worse.

A professional rescuers worst nightmare is often the jackass with no training, 9 times out of 10 you end up saving them too. (speaking from experience as a former lifeguard who more then once had to pull 2 people out of the pool cause the one untrained idiot tried to save the drowning victim)
