This Lancer Evolution IX is not just an ordinary EVO, it is an electric one. The Electric EVO has been build by Mitsubishi to participate in an electric rally at the japanese isle of Shikoku.
Like all EVOs, it is 4WD. This is realised by connecting 4 electronic motors direct to the wheels. These motors deliver 67hp each, what means a total power of 272 hp, almost as much as a regular EVO (280hp). This vehicle is still a prototype, but Mitsubishi has announced that they will build an mass produced vehicle in 2010.

Not only that, but it creates a monstrous amount of torque...something like 268lb-ft per wheel...

so what's under the hood a bunch of electronic controls and batteries instead of along the undercarriage like most?

Interesting concept, but I still prefer the gasoline powered one thank you very much =)

oh no...now rally too...nothing is sacred any more.

diesel Le Mans prototypes
ethenol Indy cars and now this...

i wonder how much it weighs.......

We're pretty resistent to change.. but it's inevitable that we won't be driving petrol powered cars forever. Cars using alternate power have been destined to start cropping up for a while - and to be honest this sort of power in a project car at the beginning of this "new industry" is pretty good for us car buffs. I agree they are not going to have the characteristics of a lumpy V8 - but remember it is only the beginning and this Evo seems to be a very impressive start. :fadein:

^No doubt our automotive future will be lean towards alternative power, but that will not stop a petrol heads following the petrol path. Cars are getting more fuel efficient than ever, yet there is still a large group of muscle car followers (or worshipers) that continue to like gas guzzling, frame twisting monsters.

So I will prefer my Evo a turbo charged (lagged) coz that is how it earns its reputation and I am hoping to keep it that way.

no fucking way, this is abreak thru!

I prefer that than the Prius...
Anyway we will have to wait a little bit...2010. I guess they have to work on the autonomy with 4 motors.

I was thinking and since those are 4 independent motors at each wheel and I'm guessing they are a type of Electromagnet design would it be possible to reverse flow on one side and make the car turn like a Tank? because that would be awesome!

Why stop there, I say push a button on the dash and we can do individual wheel burnout!!

no fucking way, this is abreak thru!

Military has been testing these systems for many years already - US Military research has paid for the major R&D and now the manufacturers who participated in the programs are able to offer the tech to the people ;)

BTW - why is everyone so worried about alternat fueled cars?

The modern world relies on polymers and other plastics for it's survival....

And guess what - these are all derived from oil.

So - in order to produce all these "fuel efficient"non-oil burning cars, requires huge amounts of plastics and other polymers.. :P

So much for using less oil.

What a crock of shit this "alternative energy" movement is.

wow I had no idea plastics were derived from oil. That comes almost as much of a shock as finding out there were two Titanics.

guys, if you really think about the principles behind the operation of the DC motor, you'll realize that an electric motor is capable of an infinite amount of horsepower, unlike the gas engine. all it takes is a different setup of the magnets and a different style of winding the wire coils depending on what you want.

^but can only have so much torque

Not true. Look at the Magnetos on a train engine  If you've got the power to spin it, it can produce anything you need it too

Still won't save the world oil reserves or reduce pollution :)

yes, it's possible waht Tbird said. I don't know which kind of DC motor they're using. Only by changing the electric current flow to the stator will make each engine rotate CW o CCW 8)
Z, I don't think that car uses magnets (natural or artificial), they must be electromagnets. DC motors that have magnets weigh a lot more, would cost a fortune to build those motors, and not be as powerfull as coiled stators.
Imagine... you want to drag, you simple change your rotor, have more poles (shit, don't remember the name in english), more coil winding, and instant Watts

after that, you simply change the rotor to a more efficient and not so energy consuming arrengment

EDIT: BTW, anyone has more info on this car? I surely like to read the tech specs of the car. At last I'll put in practice my engineering degree 8)

that thing is crazy with that much torque in only one wheel! but id still take a petrol powered car

have you ever realized how much torque is actually at the wheels on alot of cars? think about it you don't divide 300 by 4 on an EVO to get the torque for example on an Automatic you have torque multiplication at the Torque converter then in the gearing in the tranny then in the transfer case there is usually another ratio to multiply it by then at the differential you have to do it again like say with a 4.10:1 ratio in the rear end so lets take an Audi A6 4.2 it starts with 310 then maybe a 2:1 in the Torque converter so now at 620 then multiply it by 3:1 in first (I know very high gearing) 1860 then 4.10:1 in the differential you are looking at about 8000 lb/ft of torque at the wheels divided by 2 so roughly 2000 at the wheels that mind blowing if you think about it but then realize how much weight it is moving and how fast. now obviously an Audi doesn't have that kind of gearing but a 4X4 does those insane Off Roaders with over 10,000 at each wheel because of all the gearing in it. So in sumation 210 lb/ft of torque is not that insane of a number.

here is a good explanation of what I am trying to say.
http://www.pcaucr.org/pcaucr/site/page.jsp?pageid=225

granted the roughly 2000 lbs of torque aren't adjusted numbers and I'm not sure how they rate the 210 from the electric motors

there was the titanic... and there was the olympic, both were identical sister ships.

First an estate, than an electric one. When will they stop? After the diesel one?

but the petrol is still the one 8)
