sorry to hear about the divorce :(

I suggest the Datsun 210 or 510. Lightweight, will handle a turbocharger well, handles very well :D

sorry to hear that, although since you both decided to get a divorce it might just be for the best...now about the car, what's your budget range??

i would love to see a 911 rally car, they used them for rallying alot back then...just make sure u can keep it on the road, those old 911's have a reputation as u know...and muddy wet roads might not be the ideal circumstances to drive a 911 hard...ofcourse i dont know your driving skills, so i cant say if its safe or not. but it sounds very attractive :D i think those old 911's are among the most beautiful cars ever.

EDIT owh btw we have some porsche/911 specialists here on JW, they know alot more about them than me...ask them for advice, thats what they're here for :D (and maybe to enjoy the great JW atmosphere)

well a 911 and offroad is a mean combo only suited for the best drivers I would suggest like Z said an old Datsun 510 or maybe an old school mini if you can find either one in decent shape. since your budget is 20 grand you might be able to buy an older Impreza 2.5 RS or even a wagon for something different and that way you will have the AWD advantage.

yeah i think a mini is a good idea, they're small and manoevrable, and cheap (at least here in holland)

OOH, one thing i forgot to mention. Try and sell anything you think she might go after in the divorce to your friends for like a buck (make a bill of sale for it too) that way she has no legal right to any of it :D

For 20K you might be able to find an old Audi 5000 or an E30 325. I think they would work quite well too :D

to true, one of my bosses at my old work did what was basically a wife swap, went on holiday with another couple and his wife went off with the bloke... months later he ended up with that guys wife. anyway for ages till it was sorted he relied on credit cards, they were everywhere, when he bought stuff he'd just laugh and say pick a card one may work :P In the end he got the house though, which in a village in dorset was worth a bomb :D happy ending he was very well off in the end and happy :D. Anyway enough of the heart warming stories :P .Hope your's turns out as well as it can too :D

lol, we are getting a "friendly" divorce, which means that we keep what we had, and since i produce all the income, i get all my property and money, but i'll still help her out. now the cars!

1: i don't want an impreza, just because i want a classic car and imprezas are so common among the highschoolers around here.

2: minis are succeptable to either A: getting run over by crazy rednecks, which happens often, or B: getting stuck in mo=ud, which also happens frequently. if not, i'd absolutely love to have one.

3: the main reason im leaning towards the 911 is becasue ive driven a few of the original 901s and loved their handling "wildness". i found it very easy to control, i so i guess it just comes to some peple. im not vouching that im a professional driver, lol.

4: damn, i didnt even think of a datsun 510! thats a great performer, ive heard. i need to drive one before i make my decision, which wont be very hard to do, becaus emy neighbor has one, in somewhat shabby condition, but hey, it runs!

thanks a lot for the sugestions, and PLEASE keep them coming!

how about an old school beetle with a turbo? they use stock engine and suspension old school beetles in the Baja 1000 and they even finish the race so that is saying something about the car I would think and I hear the older beetles handle like a Porsche what with the engine in the rear and all.

I am giving you fair warning. There is no Vaccine for the Datsun bug. Once you have it, you cannot shake it. Symptoms consist of the following: the urge to drive your Datsun everywhere; The irresistible urge to blip the throttle at red lights, even if no one is next to you; Uncontrollable grins everytime you see another Datusn of any type on the road; Finding yourself trying to start Datsun convoys; Your forum subscription count suddenly includes every Datsun/Nissan forum you can find; and the worst symptom of all: The uncontrolable urge to buy more Datsuns :D

It is extremely easy to catch this bug and you will never see it coming. All you have to do is ride in one. If you drive one, all hope is gone. Just riding in one however there is a slight ray of hope..but it depends on wether the carbs are running right

well, if i have to settle for a 260 i will, as long as it's a 5spd. but i much prefer the 240 :D

well considering you can have it at 225 hp from the factory 280 should be a cake walk to get to don't you think. I would definitely try to find the TT version of the engine.

When i get a decent digital camera there is a really nice datsun running round. Here ferrari's and lotus are more popular then a restored datsun at least i see more of em then i do any datsun's. Anyhow there is a nice looking one in metallic blue with silver stripes ill try and snap some pics next time i see em!!

the more i think about it, themore i realize that Nissan was obssessed with rally-able cars. The 180 and 240sx models would be awesome on dirt, probably more so the 240..

I think a BMW 320i or a 2002 would be an awesome selection as well. and the Mercedes 190E has some potential it seems.

Don't know how well the Eclipse/Talon would hold up on a rally...

Subaru had some older cars that did quite well if i remember correctly.

* I'm writing this list keeping in mind your 20K budget and realizing the susapension upgrades alone are going to be quite pricey

well the big differnce is the twin RS4 intercoolers they put on it actually and with minor modifications like intake and exhaust and obviously the tune on the ECU 280 should be within reach no trouble. you could go big time with it and upgrade to the RS4 turbo its a KO4 I believe and that will get you from 180 to 240 fltwheel on the standard GTI or you could go all out and pay some cash to have DubWerks make you one of their S2 kits which you have to get them to custom make since it isn't technically available to the public but there are a few 1.8T's have them around here. that kit alone is worth 295 on pump gas at the wheels from the 180 flywheel stock...
