Umm; there is the city of Westminster which while part of London, is technically a different city but in day to day life there is no difference.

Greater London in general refers to Zone 1 of the tube map. Have a search for the map and you will see.

"The city" or "The Square Mile" (actually more than a square mile in area) is defined by London's old medieval walls. This is London's financial sector. It is north of the River Thames, stretching from Blackfriars Bridge to Tower Bridge, and as far north as Smithfield Market and Liverpool Street Station.

As for a population; there are some, but living space is not abundant. Central London is mainly a commercial place. I think that westminster has a population of 500,000. I have no idea where that figure came from though.

Greater London is the City of London (Square Mile) and its 31 boroughs. Basically the city and it's surrounding area. I'm fairly certain the the population is around 7 million.

Manchester is basically the same, it's a city inside Greater Manchester. So the Manchester area would be the City of Manchester and its boroughs. Population is ~2.5 million
