According to the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport (AMS), BMW is planning a mid-engined sportscar around the V10 from the M5/M6 with 550 HP or the new V8 from the upcoming M3 with a tuned +400 HP.
Prices should start at around 120.000,00 euros.
AMS thinks they will call it the Z9.

My guess is that they might call it the M1, there was already a Z9 concept car that served as a public-teaser for the new 6 series so it would be unwise for BMW to use the same designation twice in such short time.
Besides, 'M1' still has much more appeal with the real fans and any car that uses the V10 engine should have an M in its name.
If this story is true, we might have a real alternative to the Gallardo and the F430.

This is a very false pic... BMW is indeed working on its second supercar but there is no info about the name of it. This car is definitely NOT the succesor of the Z8. The Z8 was a pure retro roadster, whereas the "Z9" will be a pure supercar..

Info from german AMS
Meanwhile read the full article of AMS and also read an article with the development chef Burkhard Göschel. According to AMS there will be only one sportscar from BMW and it will be in the range of the Gallardo - F430. BMW noticed the poor sales of the McLaren SLR - Porsche Carrera GT and will not develop their version of a supercar. So they will stick to their original plan for a mid-engined V10 or V8 for about 120.000,00 euros.
AMS said M3 and Z4M should have about 415 HP and 7 speed gearbox.
In the interview, Dr. Göschel confirmed BMW had other plans for the V10 other than the M5/M6 but they wouldn't be building an X5 V10. So probably confirmation of the Z10 is coming in 2008. Or do they have other plans (M7?)?
the pic at the top obviously wont look anything like the concept its not a bad photoshop though

If they follow their naming scheme then most likely it won't be called a Z9 since that is suppose to represent a 4 door.

Well from what I see, that looks nice. However, we must remember the 6 series back... front cool, back shiet!

It wouldn't be the first time BMW made a mid-engine car.
And what do think about it becomming the next 8-series? or M8?

that Z9 story is RUBBISH. there is no such thing.
there is however a car BMW is working on, which will serve to be as a *lightweight* sports car, and it will be a convertible. It is being developed under the name "California". The California in development will use the same engine as the M5, BUT it will be really light. that will compete against the F430, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Lambo Gallardo.
where have i gotten my info? I WILL NEVER TELL! ;)
Convertible?... Roadster I suppose like the CGT... And why should BMW build a car with the aim to compete the 430, Gallardo, 911 turbo since it already has the M6... The car that we'r talking about is supposed to be a supercar, a rival of the CGT, Enzo, Zonda, etc..
i agree wuth dani d.. it would be sacrilege to use the name M1.. M10 would be good..

I remember reading an issue of Sport Auto where they were testing at Hockenhaim I think the Viper, the Gallardo and the M6. O-100 the M6 does it in 4.2 and the Gallardo in 4.4 and the lap times are 1,11.8 for the Gallardo and 1,14.4 for the M6.. And with the arrival of the M6 CSL these gaps are going to become even more smaller..The differences arent big enough, so why would BMW produce a totally new supercar to rival with these cars?(again..).. Dont see the point... 1 or 2 sec arent worth of making a totally new supercar..

^^^^
If u look it in absolute numbers then yeah its a gap, but what Im trying to say is that why would BMW spent a huge amount of money and im saying huge cause her supercar is going to be a brand new model which wont be based on any other car, simply just to compete with these rivals for the 2nd time and not build a pure supercar especially when almost all her direct rival companies have a supercar at their fleet(Murcielago, Enzo, CGT, Zonda even that worthless piece of shit the SLR)..

why does mercedes make the slr? because it can. why is audi building its r9? because it can. anyways, there'll probably be a concept befre you see any test cars rolling around, and probably by next year, too.
