View Full Version : Did Ford do what they wanted to with the GT?

They wanted to beat the 360/cs
well did they?
re-sale value of the ferrari is higher....
MPG is higher.... you can drive around in in low revs, but you can't turn the blower off on the ford
User friendlyness of the ferrari is better (available in auto, cargo space, those doors are bad for people with bad backs)
Did Ford take away any ferrari sales? now they are going to say they didn't build the GT to knock heads with Ferrari watch :D
Styling? well it is a big jump for the ford, but it is a toss up IMO the 360 is one of my least fav. ferrari to look at, but it is still amazing. mayb if it was a 60's ford gt40, but not the GT
On the Track? anyone have any GT ring times?
all in a the GT is a good car.. but still is missing alot
I don't think Ford should be happy about reaching their goals... cause I don't think they did :(
but I still want one, but I want a 430 more

Well I couldnt believe that Ford wanted to beat a 6 year old car in the first place.
When they were making the GT I thought they were going to aim for the Enzo. So when the "Ferrari Vs. Ford" articles came out I was surprised...like honestly its like releasing an artcile saying "Z06 Vs. Boxster"
To me this car has no place in the market. It's too slow to beat the Enzo and it clearly cant be competition for the 360.
So Ford wanted to beat Ferrari. To bad there isnt a Ferrari for it to go against.

i never got the idea of the GT, as SFD says, supposedly it was gonna go against the Enzo but then they saw it was too slow and faced it against the CS...
I guess they didnt do the car they wanted. Its a good car, but not good enough

This was no 2nd showdown, that's for sure...like back in the days when Ford successfully competed with Ferrari and won leMans for 4 consecutive years. This time it totaly didn't work out. And it's a shame...beacuse they had the perfect, reincarnated shape of the old car. Well basically it goes fast in a straight line and that's were it competes with the italian car. But when it comes to everything else it looses hands down. It's not beacuse it's bad, it's just that the CS does everything so much better, superior handling the best example.

well I think they did do what they wanted.
firstly the Ford gets decent mileage under normal conditions. 13/21 independently tested
versus 11/16 by the same people.
what does low revs and turning off the blower have to do with anything? the blower only makes as much power as the driver wants ie where the driver keeps the revs.
It's supposedly quieter inside than the 360
boohoo about the damn doors suffer through it.
cheaper to maintain
much, much rarer.
better looking
and apparently it can out handle the Ferrari aswell according to most every article on the 2.

your joking right? clearly couldnt have been competition for the 360 why, because it completely trashed it in performance? yes i know it was an old car, step in F430.
how do you figure that the 430 doesnt compare to the GT? well it pretty runs neck and neck if not slightly edges that out as well (using the C&D article as reference). on performance alone it beat out the 430 in almost every department and had a faster track time. its pricing is similar i think it lists at 150k or so and the ferrari at 180k.
GT to the Enzo why? because your newest ferrari cant beat it in performance?

Holy shit slow down buddy.
If you say that the GT is competition for the 360 then fine! Im glad for you. Fucking pathetic for Ford to compete with a 6 year old car with 100 less bhp. Quite the standarts they have

im saying the GTs competition was the 360 and currently is the F430. right when the GT came out ferrari still hadnt come out with the 430 AFAIK so its competition at the time was the 360 by default and actually it had 150 less hp :D not my fault the ferrari was lacking.
currently though the F430 is the fords rival as i stated in my first post and the 430 is exacly even in performance on the track if not slightly edged out.

Fine 150bhp then. Good. Ferrari lacking? So I guess the 911 turbo and a whole lot of other cars are lacking then? Thats were my "Has no place in the market" line comes in. Its significantly more powerful then the 400+ sports cars like the F430, Z06, 911TT...And its short to go against the hypercars... :|
Even then, it has an indentical time to an F430(which is running slow Bridgestones, not the optional faster Pirellis).
So in the end, it beat an an old outdated 360 and it couldnt beat its replacement. What can I say. Bravo Ford :D

resale value? i personally dont know but im sure you are right.
MPG? the blower doesnt hurt your MPG unless your in boost i dont think. and i think you took the top gear episode to seriously. the GT has the same if not better gas milage due to its tall gearing.
the doors suck? your probably right but who cares they look cool and its not like you have to climb in through the window.
ferrari sales? again your probably right but yet again im not too concerned with putting ferrari out of business.
cargo space? i guess you got it beat there too congrats. :)
user friendlyness? i guess since cars with a manual are so hard to drive. if you are deciding between these 2 cars and it comes down to......"well i have to shift the GT all the time, too much hassle" then by all means take the ferrari.
styling? completely subjective, i think both cars look great and its hard to call a winner there as ppl have different tastes.
so you have a winner based on resale, MPG, cargo room, and the "user friendlyness" of not having to drive a manual gearbox. bask in your infinite glory because i dont care. :P

this really is pathetic you Ferrari only girls are complaining about a car that was designed and released waay before the F430 was so how is that fair when using your argument of it beating an older car? yeah that's right shut up.
now If I recall all you haters back when the GT first came around you were all praising that it could beat the 360 and had to keep telling everybody but it isn't an American car it's British etc. etc. but now that the F430 comes around (And BTW C&D did a review of the 430 and GT and said the GT was a better car but the 430 was more livable) it's a piece of American garbage that doesn't seem to deserve it's existence.

well yea the porsche is lacking (@415 for the 911tt) currently and the new 911TT will have about 500hp im sure so we will have to wait for the new model. and sorry the ferrari has crappy tires, i didnt make that decision.
i never said it was significantly more powerful than the F430 or the Z06, 50hp is not alot when you are talking close to 500.
and no it doesnt really "beat" its replacement (we could argue for days about which has better performance and get nowhere since they are so close) but it sure as hell doesnt lose either. its right on par with the benchmark of its class and the fastest ferrari currently on sale. i would see that as being a good thing and yes indeed congrats ford.
and you are seriously saying that its a bad thing that it has more horsepower than its rivals? i dont understand? i guess ford should detune it. i think its an accomplishment that people actually do compare it to the enzo and CGT even though it doenst compete with them.

WTF Are you on about?
It beat an outdated 6 yeard old Ferrari.
You say the 360 is its competition? Fine. It is. Am I supposed to be impressed by the fact that a Ford the "Ferrari exterminator" beats a 6 year old Ferrari??? :?
British?WTF? The original GT40 was half british not this one.
Now how is the GT a better car then the F430 if they lap the same time? Tell me please. What is it about the GT that is better then the F430s? It doesnt have half the techonolgy that the F-car does. It doesnt have a pure N/A engine. It doesnt have the noise, it doesnt have the quality. It doesnt even have an original style.(but it does look good, but so would an F430 with a 250GTO body work....)
So whats your point really?
The car has no place!
Saying it again. It doesnt have anything to beat the Ferraris best, it doesnt have anything to beat Ferraris latest entry class, all it can do is beat an old 360. Wooohooo great! :D
Seriously what is the arguing about? Whats your point?

Fine, so it equals the F430. Does it beat it? No, does it lose to it? No.
So what did it really beat? Nothing. As I said, it beat up a washed up old car. Just because McBride beat Tyson does it make him a better boxer? Hell no, Tyson is old, way past his prime. Same shit here.
By saying that it doesnt have a place in the market I was actually trying to make it look better. Because if you do say it's competition is the Z06, F430, 911TT and the rest then shit, Im sorry, it doesnt beat any of them so it just another "fast car".
So the bottom line is. Who did it really beat to be so great? Nobody.
Ford came out and was saying that its a Ferrari slayer? Is it? Clearly not, unless ofcourse they like to beat up on outdated material.
So to answer Torontos original question. Did Ford do what they wanted to with the GT? No

Resale value, definitely, but the 360CS & F430 are Ferraris, it really doesn't matter how good the GT is, or how bad the 360 or 430 is (not saying they are, just that it doesn't really matter, Ferrari's image is that good) the Ferrari's would still have better resale...on top of that Ford and their wonderful dealers did all they could to ruin the resale, so there you go.
Where did you get the MPG thing from? Top Gear, where they only quoted the GT's track mpg? In everyday driving the GT would spank the 360CS or the 430 in mpg.
User friendliness, well shit, if you can't drive a manual transmission and you want to own a supercar, tough luck (oh wait, sorry, Ferrari has something for that now). ;) Anyways, the GT is supposed to be easy to drive, and 'user friendly' in both normal conditions, and aggressive driving.
Who knows about them taking away from Ferrari sales or not, for the most part not, but I'm sure a few people choose the car because it is completely different from a Ferrari...
The styling is definitely a toss up, I like both shapes. The Ferrari has better details, but they both look great.
On to performance, where the GT basically demolishes the 360, but that is to be expected when competing against an older car, but the GT also manages to be a bit faster than the F430 as well (straight line speed).
I'd say overall Ford achieved their goal of making an impressive looking & excellently performing supercar to celebrate their centurial. The car is friendly to drive, its fast, it has great presence, excellent engine sound, good handling, & good price...I'd say those are nice achievements for any car. 8)

so because the car doesn't need all this funky E-diff stuff and F-1 gearbox to make the driver better it isn't as good as the F430? I would think it was the better car because it performs on par with a car that NEEDS all that technobable to keep up. Oh and it has the noise it has that thing NO euro car can have American Rumble. Oh and I've seen the interior of one of these first hand and the quality is very good especially for what you haters call American build quality. And the GT looks waay better than the F430 after getting VERY close up views of both I have to say the Ford just looks that little bit better. but then again you can't really argue the looks thing and that I hope you CAN agree on because looks are something different from person to person.

^^ Agree!
I think the GT is a great car. It looks like nothing else rolling on our city streets.
Its an excellent first attempt at a Supercar IMO. Sure, it has flaws but so does everything if you put it under a microscope....
Besides the current market value for a used GT is $~200K which is above list. Its too early to predict long term values.
I think if Ford is serious about the GT it should sell it, service it in different, more exclusive dealerships - i wouldnt want to wait in line behind 50 F150 car owners to get my 150K car serviced.
T-Bird

well with the service thing I would take it to Victor Ford's Performance shop all they do is SVT, Saleen, Roush, Kenny Brown and Superformance. (this is the place where they showed the new Cobra to the public first as far as I know.)
So see if I were to have one I would know where to get it serviced and I'm sure all the owners have a special dealer they would go to.

:? Ahh FYI if you want to turn up the fastest lap time in the F430 you turn all the driving aids off, so your point about it needing all that to keep up flies right out the window.
I dont care what Ferrari used back in the day. FYI I never really loved the F40 because it has a turbo. I'm an NA guy. I always see the F40 as a great car, but it will never be my top Ferrari just because it has a turbo.
To me the F430 is a better car, it just has much more to offer.
Dont get me wrong, I love the GT. I love the fact thats its raw performance car, no bullshit, no strings attached. I'm just saying that what Ford did does not impress me. They should've tried a tad bit harder and actually have something to beat its current rivals since you insist on it being on the same competion level as the the Z06 and the F430, all it does is match them, so it doesnt do what Ford say it would do.

just to let you guys know, the automatic-trans supercar market is huge, if not bigger then the manual one.
bill gates was asked why doesn't he drive a ferrari or lambo, he says he doesn't know how to drive a 5-spd, so he will stick to his merc.
now that said, if gates wants to feel like he is driving a supercar but doesn't have to deal with a heavy clutch, and a powerfull engine (i bet most the people on this site couldn't get a clean launch in a supercar for the first couple of starts) he well but the paddle gear box, what is like 60% of ferrari sales are paddle shift? and now lambo have their e-gear.
and ford have.... er I will buy a F430 :D

i never bashed the 430, not once did i say it was a poor car or didnt meet its goals. i didnt start a topic in the ferrari section saying how great the GT is, and how the 430 fails to eclipse it. because what it boils down to is personal preferance.
and the article was refrencing performance figures not bs "gotta have it factor" and "luggage space." i dont give a shit if car and driver doesnt think that the car is ergonomically sound.

hence the world nostalgia (spelling improvement)
A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.
The condition of being homesick; homesickness.
the F430 gives a sence of something else, say liniage... and the ford lacks that :)

 Well so basicly what you are saying is that only re-creations of old cars cary nastalga etc etc... Sorry I don't get it.
hence the world nostalgia (spelling improvement)
A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.
The condition of being homesick; homesickness.
the F430 gives a sence of something else, say liniage... and the ford lacks that :)

wait sorry i dont mean to drag the thread on but i have one more question.
your post here:
Fine, so it equals the F430. Does it beat it? No, does it lose to it? No.
So what did it really beat? Nothing.
and im going to interchange some words.....
Fine, so it (F430) equals the GT. Does it beat it? No, does it lose to it? No.
So what did it really beat? Nothing.
by your logic the F430 is a nothing too, it doesnt beat anything, since we agreed the cars are give or take, "performance equals."

F430 didnt come out with claims to be a "Ford Slayer"
I simply expected the GT to be a much faster car then it is. Simple is that. Do I have anything against it? No not really, I just thought it would be faster then what it is.
The GT came out with Ford saying its a Ferrari Killer, which its not, and tahts all Im saying.

just to let you guys know, the automatic-trans supercar market is huge, if not bigger then the manual one.
bill gates was asked why doesn't he drive a ferrari or lambo, he says he doesn't know how to drive a 5-spd, so he will stick to his merc.
now that said, if gates wants to feel like he is driving a supercar but doesn't have to deal with a heavy clutch, and a powerfull engine (i bet most the people on this site couldn't get a clean launch in a supercar for the first couple of starts) he well but the paddle gear box, what is like 60% of ferrari sales are paddle shift? and now lambo have their e-gear.
and ford have.... er I will buy a F430 :D
and JiggaStyles09 it is nice to know that you are backing up your ferrari bashing with a artical that gives the ferrari the top spot :D
Ok, let me get this straight...the fact that their is a large and growing poser market is a reason to support automatics in supercars? And one of your main reasons for picking the F430 is because it is more 'poser-friendly'? Are you serious? So what if most of the people on here couldn't get away cleanly on their first start in a supercar, I know there's a good chance I'd screw up, but who buys a supercar because it is easy to drive?
I am really surprised you think that is a short-coming of the Ford boys to have not included an essentially poser feature in their car. Yes, the F1 is great on the track and all that bullshit, but really, what it boils down to for SMG, e-gear, F1...is so people who either don't know how to drive a proper manual, or are too lazy, can own a Ferrari or Lamborghini or whatever it may be. How many posers who were previously turned away because Ferrari's only had manuals now buy them because they can get it in F1? I'd bet a good lump of that 60%...
Sorry, but there is no way Ford sticking to a real manual is a mark against the car. For once they are showing that the car is serious and not for posers.

Well I think Toronto started the whole thread with politics in mind. Not mechanics, I think we got carried away a bit. Although I did try to stick to politics by saying that I dont see a place in the market for it
As for F1. Well I would never pick it over a proper manual. Never.
But dont write it off as a poser tool.
If you want to go the aboslute fastest you pick the F1. Simple as that. I think its a great advance in gearbox technology.
But its 100% true. No poser will ever buy a proper manual. But dont think that all the F1 customers are posers. Many associate Ferrari specificaly with its F1 heritage and in F1 they use the flappy gears as we all know. If outright speed is all you want, you pick the F1.
And just to confirm the fact that I dont like F1s, here is a pic, I even race sims with a proper manual, but I do give the flappy gearbox credit for what it is.

Besides - it doesn't matter whether Ford met their goal with th GT or Ferrari their goal with the F430 or GM their goal with the Z06 or Porsche their goal with the GT3 RS... it only matters if the their people are who like, appreciate and enjoy the car.
That's it.
Nothing else matters :)
Trust me, by the time you graduate from 12 speed mountain bikes and hand me down Toyota Corollas - you either take the step of meeting a performance car desire and you buy one - any one - the one you enjoy and can afford... or you keep "dreaming" and driving your Camry while "pissing" on other peoples realities because you gaven't realized your dreams yet ;) :)
In other words, when you buy you Lotus 7, or M3 or Z06 or Viper or 335 or GT or 550 or Diablo or Enzo - who fucking cares what anyone else says about the performance, fit, finish or price?
It doesn't matter.
When you are on the open road and enjoying car - it's not a race, it's not a competition - it's just YOU, the ROAD and YOUR CAR. That's all that matters.
Ask Jabba - see what he says about ;)

According to an old article I read at the barber shop (Popular Mechanics) Gates has one of the few 959's in the country.
He used his influence to help push through legislation that allows older non-emissions compliant cars to be imported and modded and used without having to be homologated and federally compliant.
:)
I think it is 15 years - so his 959 stayed in storage from 1987 until 2002 when it was at last "legal" for US road use.
The new cats they use actually flow more than the stock ones and resulted in a little more power.

OK, you guys talking about it as if the GT was some big deal for Ford. It's not. It was only originally conceived as a tribute to the original GT40. An image car. One that might make it to production in time for Ford's centennial, but only if the GT factions within Ford had their way (and not those who favored the Forty-Nine concept).
Then they unveil it at the Detroit auto show and suddenly people are saying they want to buy it. Not just one or two people. But LOTS. Some who were old enough to have remembered the original GT40's coming across the line at La Sarthe.
From there, at a breakneck development pace, Ford worked on the GT. But only after Ford bigwigs demanded it meet the timetable, and they made it clear that it was not a priority project. Remember, Ford was bleeding for money at the time, so a limited-production 2-seat exotic was most certainly NOT the best way to go. There would certainly have been no green light had the GT supporters targeted the Enzo. Which, frankly, wasn't even on the market at the time. Only the 360 was the known benchmark. Not even the Stradale had been released yet. But nevermind, the Ford GT would beat even that car (which had super-sticky P Zero Corsas no less).
And in the latest C&D comparo, it not only outruns the F430 in a straight line, but slightly beats its lap time on the road course. This in a car that is geared for intergalactic travel with a 212-mph top end (since limited to 205 mph).
Forget about the 360 Modena, the Ford outdoes the stripped track-focused Challenge Stradale, and keeps pace (and even outperforms by some margin) the brand new F430. And easily takes all of them on for GT purposes.
"Ferrari Slayer"? That was C&D's headline writing. Not Ford's advertising.
Instead of slagging off Ford, maybe some of you guys should appreciate that a company known more for family sedans and pickup trucks has stepped up and delivered to the world another interpretation of what a supercar can be.
Resale...that's hard to say at this point. You can find F355's for well less than half of their original value nowadays. The same is likely to happen for the F360, which accounts for about 65% of Ferrari's annual production of roughly 4200 cars. That's about 13,000 Modenas over a 5-year run. Ford has only planned 4500 GT's, which might then be replaced by the Shelby GR1. Which, frankly, should do little to nothing to impact GT market prices. Ferrari V8's, however, will always become somewhat stale with the next model revision. And in affluent places outside of the US, they will no doubt be considerably more common than the GT.
360's can be seen changing hands for as low as $105-115K:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=84156&item=4560512677
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=84156&item=4560583242
And that's not even talking about Ferrari shop/labor prices.
Fuel economy. EPA numbers:
360 Modena - 11/16
Ford GT - 14/21
Before you say "well, nobody ever gets EPA numbers"...doesn't matter. Both cars would have been tested under identical conditions over the same simulated routes on a rolling treadmill. And the fact remains that the GT delivered better economy. In the recent C&D comparo, with all cars driven over the same exact roads, the GT did slightly better than the F430: 12 mpg vs 11 in mixed driving (and they readily admit to driving like "valets on crystal meth").

well i read this thread kinda late so all that GT vs. Ferrari stuff have pretty much been said. in my opinion, the ferrari 360 is a POS ( a POS that i will never be able to buy ) compare to the GT. this is in MY OPINION. the 430 is a HUGE improvement over the 360, and is pretty much share an equal spot with the GT in my list.
now back to the main question. if you would look at Ford's other reasons to build the GT, i think they did what they wanted too.
- bring up the ford's image
- attract public and media attention
- homage to the legendary GT40.

Personally I would have liked it if they'd created a proper supercar, that could have competed with the likes of the Ferrari Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT. That's what it looks like from the out side, but the performance isn't as good as its looks. Too bad.
Define "proper supercar".
Are you kidding? The GT is only 1/4th of what an Enzo costs (going on MSRP's). Only 1/3rd of what a CGT costs. And you expect it to match those cars for performance? It almost does, and much closer than its price would suggest. Try to be realistic for a moment.
But keep in mind.
If it wasnt for the rednecks buying the Vette Coupes, there would never be a Z06.

this really is pathetic you Ferrari only girls are complaining about a car that was designed and released waay before the F430 was so how is that fair when using your argument of it beating an older car? yeah that's right shut up.
now If I recall all you haters back when the GT first came around you were all praising that it could beat the 360 and had to keep telling everybody but it isn't an American car it's British etc. etc. but now that the F430 comes around (And BTW C&D did a review of the 430 and GT and said the GT was a better car but the 430 was more livable) it's a piece of American garbage that doesn't seem to deserve it's existence.
OMFG, you are an idiot, please grow up and act your own age if your not lieing about it.
The Ford GT was meant to go up against the Ferrari 360 Modena. The creater of the 360 even came and tested one of the test Ford GTs and loved it but he also commented that it would never beat the 360. When the Ford GT finished they took it to the track with a mustang engine with 400 hp and ended up beating the 360 by 3-4 seconds, even one of the 360s broke its clutch trying to keepup nice 'user friendleness'. The 360 creator gave no shit and just said brilliant car, although most the people on this board can only say its just a Ford.
Now you say that tough luck it beat a 6 year old car, so what the 360 couldn't even beat a 66' GT-40. Also on that note how many was the 360 in development?, while the Ford GT was only in 6 months of development. So a Ferrari in development over years can't beat a Ford GT made in 6 months.
Then it went on to beat every Porsche except for the CGT, every Lamborghini, and every Ferrari except the Enzo and you have the guts to say it didn't live up to what it was apposed to live up to? You know what the Ford GT is one of the most popular supercars out there and even a dream car to many people no matter young or old. Remeber its just a Ferrari.
Hah, I can't believe you guys even banned me with how you guys judge on peoples oppinions and Car Companies, as I said before grow up and act your own age.
Edit-
JiggaStyles09, I thank you for defending the Ford GT, not many people will.

Ferraris take more time to develope because the end result is a good handling car, the GT doesn't have anything against a 306 or a 430 for that matter in corners.
Ie, the GT isn't a good-handling car? Is this based on your experience of driving both of them back to back?
Evo magazine did just that. And declared in unequivocal terms the Ford GT better in handling.
http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/4663/fordgt360mpg026yo.th.jpg (http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/4663/fordgt360mpg026yo.jpg) http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/6716/fordgt360mpg035td.th.jpg (http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/6716/fordgt360mpg035td.jpg)
Even against the Challenge Stradale (on R-compound tires), the Ford GT holds its own. From C&D's head to head test last year:
Skidpad
Ford GT: 0.98g
360CS: 0.98g
Emergency Lane Change
Ford GT: 70.1 mph
360CS: 67.2
Gingerman lap times (Gingerman isn't a fast track; a 405-hp Z06 can play its gearing advantage to outpace a 500-hp Viper on the straights here, even though both corner at the same speeds):
Ford GT: 1:32.13
360CS: 1:34.19
Overall Handling Rating
Ford GT: 10
360 CS: 9
And against the F430, the Ford GT holds up well. From this month's C&D:
Skidpad
Ford GT: 0.94g
F430: 0.96g
Lane change
Ford GT: 71.8 mph
F430: 71.4 mph
Streets of Willow lap times
Ford GT: 1:32.61
F430: 1:32.68
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/9883/0055aj.th.jpg (http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/9883/0055aj.jpg)
(Streets of Willow is a very tight and twisty technical track. Notice how the F430 is just as fast as the Ford GT on the front straight; and faster than the GT on the back straight even though the GT pulls more g's in the immediately preceding corner; short gearing of the F430 pays off here.)
Overall Handling rating
Ford GT: 10
F430: 10
The Ferraris have slightly better steering feel, but in terms of overall handling, it is dead wrong to say "the GT doesn't have anything against a 306 or a 430 for that matter in corners."
