Renault had brought tens of thousands of employees to Magny-Cours to watch the French Grand Prix. And they got what they came for - a dominant victory by World Championship leader Fernando Alonso, who led from start to finish.
Such was the Spaniard's early race pace it seemed certain that he would stop early for fuel. But he stayed out longer than all his key rivals, emerging from his first pitstop with his comfortable margin intact before leading through two more stops to the chequered flag. Victory takes his lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship to a commanding 24 points.

This was Alonso's race, but Kimi Raikkonen deserves special mention for a very strong drive that saw him go from 13th on the grid (after a ten position penalty was applied for an engine replacement) to the second step of the podium at the end of the race. Strong early pace saw the Finn climb quickly to tenth place - but he moved right up the order as rivals began to make their first pitstops and it became clear that the McLarens were on two-stop strategies versus the three-stoppers of most other contenders. After running in P3 behind Montoya, Raikkonen put in some searing laps to create the margin he needed to emerge from his own first stop ahead of the Colombian.

Montoya's run of poor luck continues - he retired from a strong-looking third place after mechanical problems struck, dramatically slowing his car and allowing Michael Schumacher past from fourth place. The World Champion drove a characteristically mature race to end up third on the podium, but both he and the Ferrari team will have been alarmed by just how far off the pace the F2005 proved to be. Schumacher barely escaped the indignity of being lapped by Alonso is the closing stages of the race.

Jenson Button drove a strong race to finish fourth, with Jarno Trulli ending up in fifth place. Despite his strong qualifying performance Trulli's Toyota looked conspicuously slow from the beginning of the race, so he did well to claim four championship points.

Giancarlo Fisichella took sixth place, Ralf Schumacher finished seventh and Jacques Villeneuve put in one of his strongest drives of the season to end up with a well-deserved eighth place.

Williams had a particularly miserable race - Webber and Heidfeld both suffering from serious problems and ending up in a battle at the back of the pack with the Jordans of Monteiro and Karthikeyan. Heidfeld paid no fewer than six visits to the pits trying to sort out the balance of his car - while Webber drove much of the race in serious pain suffering from excessive cockpit heat.

With Silverstone just a week away the most-asked question in the paddock will be whether anyone can get close to Alonso's pace.

Dominant?? How about Anhillating :shock: Only the Podium finishers finished on the lead lap and Shumi was down by well over a minute.

Absoluetely brilliant showing for Fernando, shame about Fisichella's pitstop stall, otherwise Renault ran a flawless race. Talk about a team that has earned everything they've achieved this year. I think however most people saw this coming last year, in seeing how well they launched and their reliability, however i don't think they saw it coming this strong.

I was hoping for a much tighter battle up front than what went on, but as Michael said in the interview, Ferrari achieved the best they could have expected today, which i think is a real shame since they were more than a minute off the pace :|

MS is no where close to Alonso's time, and the worst thing is Schumi can't even beat DC's fastest lap

Yes its happened before a few times... typically when one car is dominant ...

E.g. McLaren in 1998 - E.g. Mika and David lapped everyone in Melbourne ... they were a second a lap or more faster than anyone else.

I think the Ferraris did the same in 2002 and 2004 for a couple races.

What's with Truilli by the way. He can qualify so fast and then come the race he's backing everyone up? Is he just a really really brilliant qualifier that makes him able to extract more from then car over a single lap? Or can he only drive fast over one lap only?

I guess everyone's race would be to
1. Qualify infront of Trulli
2. Pass him at the start.

Otherwise their race is doomed. I remember him bunching all the cars back up while he was in Jordan.

Great drive from Kimi by the way. Had he not had that 10 grid penalty, we would see a repeat of Barcelona. We're going to see that in Silverstone.

It was a interesting Race, I was hoping Kimi would take Alonso, as Alonso is just becoming too cocky, when he holds up his 5 fingers and points out to the crowd all the time...im sure we can all count without using fingers.

Ferrari is getting up to speed, but its taking some time. But i sure hope Renault will get some DNF's. :mrgreen:

IT still appears to be shaping up to be a good close season. I think despite renault and alonsos current position at the end it will be decided in 1 or 2 races.
