Remember my Nring pictures from 2 months ago :?

http://img157.echo.cx/img157/2167/jabbas3es.th.jpg (http://img157.echo.cx/my.php?image=jabbas3es.jpg)http://img299.echo.cx/img299/672/jabbas19fa.th.jpg (http://img299.echo.cx/my.php?image=jabbas19fa.jpg)

We're planning on going back there a couple of times this summer and we'll also be attending many trackdays @ Spa. And since I haven't saved up enough to buy a DSLRkit, I'll "invest" a bit in my Sony DSC-P92

What should I get to not have as crappy pics as last time ?

- SONY VF-30NK neutral density filter

http://www.sonystyle.ca/common/images/products/VF30NK_lg.jpg
# Neutral Density Filter reduces brightness and minimizes over exposure in bright sunlight

# Clear Multi Coat Filter protects the lens from dust and scratches

or

- SONY VF-30CPKS polarizing filter

http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/resources/images/products/0023000/0023019_03_lrg.jpg

# Polarizing filter suppresses unwanted reflections off glass and water
# Hard carrying case for protection
# Multi-coated filter protects lens from dust and streaks
# Fits 30mm lens diameter

Or do I need both ?

Thanks

Circular polarizer for sure. Be sure you can fit one on your camera, then just pick the correct diameter and you are set.

before going to the track, practice at home to see how the effect changes while rotating it ;)

BTW, it's very hard to completely remove glares from a moving car: if parked, you can slowly rotate your filter untill you find the correct position. But when it moves, the angle with wich the light hits the surface constantly change, and the perfect result would be tricky. Still worth the money hands down!

BTW, because of us, JW will soon be the top result if you will google for "polarizer filter" :D

Haha....we haven't made the top 10 yet so still some work to do. :D

I have ordered my adaptor so I should have it all ready to go by Friday - can't wait. :D

BTW, if you don't have time to adjust the filter (say for a moving car you just saw) will it create bad (negative) results if in the wrong position?

Just in case this helps with Google:

Dude, I thought your camera can't have filters installed. Did I just misunderstand or forgot? great news anyway!

And well, if the filter is not perfectly placed, maybe it will just reduce the glare but not at best. The actually if it's really placed in the perfectly bad position, it can actually make it even worst, but you must really have bad luck.

In most cases if you keep it in the "top" position you can't go totally wrong ;)

Thanks for the replies,

Where should I order them (the filter and adaptor) ? Would I be able to get them from the US without paying extra taxes ?

I bought a new camera ( http://www.dpreview.com/news/0504/05042201canons2is.asp ) last weekend, which I mentioned in the last topic I posted in the WYST section (the motorkhana pics).

So this new one can fit filters once I get the adaptor (72mm) - though thats not the only reason I got it. Its still not a digital SLR but at the moment I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money so this one should do me for awhile. :D

Good, I missed that post actually! It should be a nice camera to use!

Cigarette1 >> you'd better try to find some Hoya filters or so, I'm almost sure they'll be less expensive than Sony's
For example I paid 50€ for mine (too expensive IMO but I needed one as soon as possible) while the same one (+neutral filter) costs 155€ by sony

Concerning the adapter, I was forced to order it on the web (sony once again) and I remember the one for the P92 is also very hard to find in regular shops :?:

Dingo >> your's will be huge, mine is only 58mm but I already find it too big for my camera :D

Yea, I just found out, think I'll order the adaptor soon as possible on e german site where they stille some a couple in stock.

Will those Hayo filters fit the sony adaptor ? Sony polarizing filters are +-65EUR overhere and only 45-55USD in US

Sure, it's probably the same thing (haven't tested yet though, adapter will come in a few days), I know some people who have put Hoya filters on sony digicams and it works fine

Dingo >> your's will be huge, mine is only 58mm but I already find it too big for my camera :D

How do you mean? Its made to fit the camera so it shouldn't be too big as far as I can see, or do you just mean that its a bit big to carry around when not on the camera?

Darkel
06-22-2005, 07:27 AM
I mean, with the adapter it will look like that :
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/app/images/d_camera/tip-img-camera2.jpg
(okay, it's a G3 with wide angle, but it won't be that different, even mine)

Of course it's made to fit the cam, but IMO it looks weird :D That's absolutely not a criticism, just a notice

dingo
06-22-2005, 07:29 AM
damn that looks ridiculous  , I know what you mean now. :|

TT, does yours look like that?

TT
06-22-2005, 08:28 AM
Nope, mine is just slightly larger than the "virgin" lense and it appects already the weight balance of the camera! For yours you will need to train your forearms before going out and take pics. Mine is a 58 mm like Darkel's!

I really can't see why yours has to be 70+!!

dingo

Maybe the dumb girl at the shop just told me the wrong size, wouldn't suprise me. I guess I will find out on Friday...... :)

Within the user manual you usally find a list of accessories and in there you should be able to see the diameter of the available filters.

dingo
06-22-2005, 08:39 AM
Ah yes I found it and seems she was wrong. :D

It says the thread diameter is 58mm and it weighs about 19g.

hey tt do you keep a camera with you everywhere? or only when you know there will be cars. Around here i see atleast one exotic and several classics every single day and some of them i have gotten on my cell cam, but like the pininfarina maserati i shot the other day i wished that i had a better cam the shots were sucky.

TT
06-22-2005, 11:58 AM
Yeah dingo, for most non-SLR cameras, 58 is the correct diameter. spank the lady next time you see her :D

gtx, yes, I have my camera with me 99% of the time, that's why I rarely miss an opportunity ;) if a car is parked somewhere, TT will have a picture most of the time :)

some definate good advice; you never know what is parked downtown, or at a shopping center... or even passing by.
anyway, has anybody here used light-pollution filters??? im looking to perhaps get one of that nature today. in any case, i'll show the results of it when i get back from my mini-vacation :)

yea, 33mm, the 58 are +-150EUR

what difference does the 58mm make ? and would it be possible to put the 58 on a SONY DSC P92 ?

Darkel
06-23-2005, 01:11 PM
the 58 is just hem ... bigger
It's exactly the same in fact, and if the specific adapter was made for a 33mm, a 58 wouldn't fit

BTW, my adapter will be delivered tomorrow, sony is maybe expensive but damn fast, delivery by UPS in one day (I checked the "regular delivery" box though  )

yea that's quick, I just ordered the Sony adaptor @ german onlineshop, €39 including shippingcost

still haven't made up my mind where to order the filters, will customs f*ck me if I have it shipped from the US ?

TT
06-23-2005, 02:32 PM
If the declared value is higher than the max limit, yes you will need to pay the custom fee. Here the limit for something bought from a store is something like 60 USD

That adaptor you got looks strange, does it slide over the entire camera or something?

Looks like this with the adaptor on ;

dingo
07-15-2005, 10:32 AM
Oh thats strange, my adaptor just screws onto the lens and then you clip the filter into that (like Darkel's basically, exact same filter infact).....but it all has the same effect in the end so its cool. :)

Darkel
07-15-2005, 10:57 AM
The polarizer is now spreading all over the world thanks to the Messiah :P

I still have to take more shots to be absolutely happy of it but I couldn't find any good occasion with nice cars (2 or 3 shots only and nothing special :/ )

BTW a few weeks ago I was really afraid, I tried to unscrew the filter from the adapter and then I had 2 pieces of metal in the hand "wtf  " hopefully I managed to "repair" it, it was just a shitty circlips

stmoritzer

my first polarizer pictures :D

I did two with the filter on, you can see either the back window or the side window "clear", and the last one is without the filter.

btw, I browsed this thread quickly.....

My camera, a SONY V3, has also a 58mm diameter filter... I had to buy an adapter ring.
Hint: don't buy the expensive SONY filter, there are other filters available with 58mm diameter (Hoya,...)

Darkel
07-18-2005, 08:06 AM
Hey, welcome to the V3 club :D
Yep, their filters are really BS, way too expensive, and having a neutral one doesn't make the difference

dingo
07-18-2005, 08:34 AM
I'm absolutely loving my filter - some of the best money I've ever spent! :D

Its still not perfect at times like you said when you have reflections from different directions - but for sure better then without one. :D However in certain pictures it is such a huge improvement that I don't know how I managed without it. :?

Darkel
07-18-2005, 08:42 AM
With some angles it's hard to decide whether it's better to avoid reflections on the side of the car or on the back window ... and with some other angles there's just no really difference with/without filter :|
Life's hard :fadein:

It's a nice one, but I'm still used to saying that it's a bit too noisy (especially in 5 or 7MP) and that makes the 7MP mode pointless IMO, I barely use it, I'm always in 3MP Fine mode :bah:
