Last Tuesday evening I got home and I had enough tobacco for a couple of cigarettes (I roll my own). I had my usual after-work beer and smoked these ciggys and of course an hour or so later I was craving another smoke.

My wife was a very occasional smoker* when we met and of course hanging about with me means she's increased to a 10-a-day smoker. This is something I feel quite bad about, although it's not like I have forced her to smoke or anything!

Now I always have nicotine lozenges around for taking on plane journeys and such, so I have been chomping away on those for 5 days without a cigarette. I actually gave up for about 4 months last year (I treated myself to the Orange Trans Am in my avatar for giving up) but of course I went out one night, had a few beers and started smoking again.

So, on day 5 of giving up I am nowhere near calling myself an ex-smoker but I hope I will make it this time

If anyone wants to add words of support or anything then please do!

Finally, I know there are a lot of younger people on the forum so if I can give any advice to you without sounding patronising, don't smoke, it's not big, it's not clever, and I estimate to have spent $30,000 on cigarettes in my life already. That's a third of my mortgage I could have paid off...

*she's giving up as well and has been fantastic putting up with my short temper all week!

:| too bad for you my friend
i've seen tenths of persons trying what you're doing now, some have succeded, some not

but why not do something that could make you forget about smoking?

as I'm reading your post, you have some habits that usually came by with smoking

why not avoid your usual after-work beer? when you drink that beer you have the need to smoke
if you have a special spot for smoking, avoid it

to make these things less complicated, avoid all things that can make you remember a cigarrete

Well, I was a smoker and finally quit a couple years ago. A damn good decision, but there is no need to state the obvious.

It's a drug, and like any other drug, it sucks to be addicted, I hate to be addicted to something and that was the key point that helped me stopping. One day I just took the cigarettes packet I had at home, removed the cigs and cut them all in half, threw them in the garbage and never touched one since that day. I wasn't an heavy smoker, I have to admit it, but a very regular one and for years I always had my cigs at the same exact hour  what a shitty way to spend your time.. to put smoke inside your body???????? Silly! Another good therapy is to go in places where it's damn annyoing when somebody smokes near you: train for instance. You try to stay there for a while without smoking but just having your lungs abused by others... again this helps realizing how useless and insane it is to smoke.

Don't give up :D if you really feel the need to put something in your mouth... (no gross jokes :D), eat something.. worst case you will put up some weight like it happens to some, but you can get rid of that (hopefully not 50 kg ;)), while fucked lungs remains fucked lungs

I never smoked, and I think its because of mother telling me all sorts of stories about cancersticks when I was a kid.
I even got some of my friends to stop.

You have to keep yourself busy, and practicing sports is the best way, I swear there is nothing better and of course self-discipline, and its best to keep yourself busy during the moment you would normally smoke.
There is a lot of possibilities to help you stop, a quik search on the web will give a lot of good tips.
I wish your wife and you the best of lucks.

Never smoked cigerettes, but i do smoke Hooka, I dont believe there is nicotenne in hooka, im not addicted to it i do it only once every 3-4 months or so. I dont know if you will be able to do it if you just come off cold turkey. I hope you do, but you need to do this in steps if this doesnt work. Try hooka and then from there i think you will become less addicted. Stay away from beer since it seems that everytime you have a beer you wanna smoke.

Good Luck!

To be honest I have never even tried a ciggarette in my 18 years on this planet. I never found it cool and Dark teeth, smelly breath and the physical condition of a 60 year old...on my own request ?? NO THX!! And the thought pf having to buy a whole pack everyday if I get hooked scares the shit out of me. So much cash!!

This is your biggest test of will, like others suggested always try to keep chewing gum in your mouth. Good luck dude, I'm crossing my fingers. Update us on the progress :D

mmmm marlboro 8)

LMAO @ Thamar...

Thanks for the kind words guys, I am going to give it my best shot. Aside from the health issues, cigarettes are $8.50 / 5 GB Pounds a pack back home in the UK, and I give enough of my money to the government in tax already!

I might treat myself to that porsche I was talking about, or a superbike, in a few months if I can keep it going! :D

Someone mentioned fitness - well, when the weather cools down and I get more fit, it would be nice to cycle to work (about 7 miles) assuming the mad Texan drivers don't run me off the road!

I never moked in my life but as TT said and what I heard from people who quit - you just have to make a rocksolid decision and stand for it, sometimes(when you got temptations) even just as a princip of not doing it..... I hope it make sence 8)

[Nutty professor's voice] You can do it! [/Nutty professor's voice]

I've heard that getting past the 3rd day really helps because you're beyond the physical addiction. Then its simply a choice. Good luck.

i have never smoked in my life, not even tried it, i just dont find it "cool", and everyone that smokes says it suks and they want to quit, likes omeone in this thread eh emm... ;)
so i woudnt know, but i say tell ur friends that may also smoke that u r tryin to quit and instead of u smoking tell them to take them away from you, or just make it for yourself, if you really wanna quit and u propose it to yourself i trully think you can overcome it.
u can do it if u put ur mind into it...
oha and everyone elses ideas r good too :)

There you go substituting one life threatening addiction for another . :D ..

Best of luck to you and your wife in your initiative.

I get a headache from being near smoke so I never became a smoker myself.

I also have never smoked in my life.

Some people I know used to be heavy smokers (2 packs a day) and have succeded in kicking the habbit :). But there are also numerous friends of mine who can't force themselfs to stop :( ... a cigaret free week seems to be their record :).

Good luck mate.

Every day that you go without a smoke brings you one day closer to the day when you can look down your nose at your wife and say "you started smoking, I still haven't touched one yet".

Now if thats not an incentive I don't know what is. :D

Almost two weeks!!! Yay!!!

Although I have spent as much on nicotine therapy products as I would have on cigs at $2.75 a pack...

...much more incentive in the UK where the nicorette stuff is considerably cheaper than ciggys...

...anyway, it wasn't about the cost, it's more to ensure that I don't work all my life and drop dead before I get to put my feet up for my retirement!!

now that you only have your daily nicotine dose via nicorette, try not to use it so often
have you tried eating a carrot? it helped a friend of mine

Glad to see you are still keeping away from the cigs transam! I have been known to have a smoke or two while out on the town...but when I started dating my new GF she would have none of it, even just one smoke in a week, So i dont anymore. I still have one here and there, but now I dont even like it, so basically I dont touch em anymore. I never found myself addicted, tho I would never smoke at worst more than 2-3 cigs in a day.. so I dunno how much you need to be addicted, but sometimes I feel like one when I see others smoking. So my addiction to them was a small one, and I am sure yours is a strong one. Im glad ur still on track, keep up the good work, save money, your body , and trade in that Trans am for a Ferrari 355 in no time!

My mom tried to quit many times some 30 odd years ago. Finally, while still smoking, she noticed that her throat was feeling really sore. The doctor told her point-blank that if she does not quit now, her throat is going to get worse and she will die. She finally quit and is still here today, 75 years young. My grandfather died of emphysema when I was 6 years old, he struggled for his last breath and died in the cellar. Up to that point he was still smoking.

I should really not have even started - my Grandma (who never smoked) has very bad lungs, she uses a nebuliser and the steroids she has to take have made her back arch. Her husband (my grandad of course) died of heart disease. My other grandma died at age 67 (I was too young to remember her) from lung cancer caused by smoking.

My dad is an ex-smoker and was forever telling me to give up over the years.

Thanks for the pics Foxfour, if I get tempted I will come back here and look.

It was funny today, I was packing my DVD player into its box which has sat under the stairs for 2 years - what did I find in the box? A single camel cigarette. Needless to say I ripped it up and threw it away

I'm sure it's reallt rough. My mom had the urge to smoke for many years after she quit. I thank the doctor because he scared my mom really bad that day. She was crying days after she spoke to the doctor, but he really drove his point home.
Good luck.

Good luck mate, I did smoke like a train some 8 years ago for a period of about a month, stupid, 12 years old, we just decided to start smoking with my buddies, but I never got addicted, just one day I decided I will no more and I never craved a cigarette, and yes I was 12 and yes I did inhale the smoke  Anyway a friend of my'n could not quit and the look on the guys face when he tried was scary. He would kill for a cig, litteraly, and his parents would beat him and beat him and he would just continue. I still smoke here and there, but thats rare...

My advice, dont think that buying a pack is an option when you crave it. Just imagine that there are no cigarettes, and dont spent too much money on that gum.
