"Pricing has finally been announced for the 2006 Corvette Z06. The fastest production Vette ever will start at $65,800 including destination and freight charges. That makes it arguably the best performance deal in the high-end market, considering the hand-built 505 HP LS7 and a variety of aluminum, titanium, and carbon-fiber goodies. GM claims a 0-60 MPH time of 3.7 seconds, and most estimates put its top speed somewhere around 200 MPH (it’s unlikely that GM will supply an official number, so we’ll need to wait for road tests). The question, of course, is how many buyers will line up to pay over $65K for a Chevrolet, because world-class performance notwithstanding, it may not have the prestige that many buyers seek in that price range. Hopefully the comprehensive performance upgrades to the drivetrain, chassis, suspension, braking system, and body will help it to achieve better marketplace success than the ZR1. Expect to see it hitting dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year."

yea i think the same, that large watermarks are so stupyd and innecesary.

this car will be better than viper srt-10 ? i think yes, but all of pieces in plastic are so ugly is the only bad of this car, for me.

3.7 secs 0-100, is awesome, 505 hps, and more than 200mph for 65k, i think i so great

I like this car, but as usual the interior is a turn off, and I already saw one in real, I pressed with my finger against the body panels and they are so flexible, it felt like a toy :?
And the price is a bit too high for it to be a "real" bang for buck.

1st off - the rear panel is plastic - the same as every other car on the planet deformable plastic to conform to regulations.

The carbon fibre fenders don't "bend like plasti" - and neither do the doors or hood/bonnet.

So - on the "flexible" thing :fist: and as to the price - name one single other regular production, dealer sold and srviced daily driver full service automobile thst can meet the posted numbers for the price - just name one.

Very tough looking car, I like it.
and the interior looks simple and functional. You will hardly have time to look inside the cockpit anyway...with this kind of performance.

btw what does the DNF on the windscreen mean. Did Not Finish ? :P

Funny thing is that now everyone takes notice of "the Z06" - 5 years ago I would struggle to conduct a conversion with so called "car enthusdiasts" because they had no idea there was a 0-60 4s, 175mph, 60-0 in 110ft, 7m56s capable Nurburg hotlapper from the Corvette stable...
It was only after it posted th 7m56s and the LeMan crown fell twice in succesion to the C5R that they admitted it was what we said it was all along...

...now you can't shut them up about ragging on it... ;) :P

Z06 is still a special like the CS, not a full on main production model. And I was never impressed with the stock C5, which I think is shite, my opinion anyway.

And Chevy boys just started getting it right with the gen 5 chassis with the Z06...

So to me Corvette doesnt get much respect, "Z06" does. Cause its the only model that is as fast as some 100k + competition.

When you talk about Corvette I think "c5 Coupe, ZR1" which are shit poser cars.

in 2004, it was 17% of every corvette made... 5,683 total Z06's... how many CS's were made? how many 360's were made alotogether? somewhere less then the number of Z06's sold i think ;)
for the new Z, Dave Hill expects 1 in 5 vettes to be a Z06.

oh, and the ZR-1... 405 hp 7500 rpm redline, top speed 190 ish... nearly as well at the turns as the Z06... so, this car is just a poser car?

The number of 360's made had nothing to do with how many they could sell. It had everything to do with Ferrari wanting to keep themselves exclusive and not producing more than 5000 cars a year. If you don't thing they could easily sell more than that, you're just mistaken

I was just making the point that you can't compare Ferrari sales figures because Ferrari limit themselves to how many cars a year they want to produce, it's not really a matter of how many cars they could sell. Btw what do you think of the corvette's styling? Personally i think the one you have looks better than this one

I prefer my style FRC profile 1000% over the Coupe style to begin with - so even though the new Z06 is a beast - it doesn't have the look I would want.

Besides - 505 crank hp is not really that much these days, and instead of spending $70K+++ to reach 425rwhp (505 crank) of the new Z06, it is easily achieved for about $3,000 including labour spent on my car. ;)

800hp without significant rebuilding or S/C T/C is quite unrealistic.. ;)

Remember, the 427ci is a tried and true formula - there are many 650 crank hp NA 427ci and a fair number of TC 800hp+ cars running around - but the cost is rather more than normal bolt ons - which the new LS7 (with clever engineering) already includes.

The bottom line is a 650rwhp NA 427ci C6 Z06 will require significant investment over and above the $70K entry fee.. :P

Thats why the guys who are running 550rwhp (650+ crank hp ) 427ci C5 Z06's answer the "You gonna buy one?" with a resounding "Why buy a slower car? ;)"

But overall, at least the Corvette engineers followed up the C5 Z06 with an improvement - would have sucked it was slower.. ;)

first of all, ferrari is also probably restrained from producing more by its factory. i believe most of the ferraris are made by hand right? so they can only produce so many without turning to mass production techniques which would decrease the demand for the cars. if ferrari built a million 360s they would each cost 20000 dollars. the prices depends A LOT on how many are built.

and rc, you know just as well as anyone (and im sure youve pointed this out many times yourself) that comparing modded cars to stock cars is just ridiculous. so dont talk down on the z06 by saying that 505 hp isnt much bc you can get more than that for 3000 dollars in mods. 505 hp is an extremely huge amount of hp from a factory and you know it...

505hp is not "extreme hp" for a 427ci small block - just witness all theC5R 427ci small blocks that have been installed into C5 Z06 for 4 years now.

So - the C6 Z06 is really just a factory endorsed mod that happens to follow the same formula that private citizens have been doing - as I say - for 4 years now... 427ci small block crate motor installs.

The C5R crate motor was as cose to an option as you could get... ;)

So - comparing a C5R equipped C5 Z06 or a hot cam header C5Z06 to the C6 Z06 is very valid.. :)

And I am sure you assume I am bullshitting you but - 500 crank hp from the LS6 is as simple as a cam install, tune and headers - 550hp is only a set of heads away... really it is.

And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduce that the factory C6 Z06 is ismply a - you guessed it, hotrod 427ci big cam, heads and cam car. ;)

All the other crap (like the aluminum frame etc) they through in so the C6R can compete with the new rules - afterall, the FIA rules were again changed to give Ferrari a leg up ;) - and the ridiculous brakes (which will be the first thing ditched by class racers - and the greatest expense hitting privateers in T1) were inlcuded to help justify the price.

So gracefully, GM produced a car that incorporates the required fixtures to allow a C6R to compete in various classes - and enough add on bling to impress the posers.. ;)

[EDIT] I don't think Ferraris are "han made" any more - the factory is about as automated as it can get with robots and jigs etc - the assembly process is just a lot more hands on, surpervised and slower.

Actually it still is, seen videos quite a few vids of their assembly line, and the seats are still stiched in factory, motors are compelty hand build the whole lot......

Look how well the regular vette did, I cant wait to see the Z06 test lap, should give the 360CS a run for its money! Well considering its cost less than a 3rd the price of a 360CS I would say it will give it a SERIOUS run for its money;)

we could probably fight about this all day bc depending on how you look at it i suppose its all slang and figure of speech, but as i see it, a "modded" car is one that is changed after it leaves the factory by someone other than the manufacturer. the z06 is not a "modded" base corvette. its built in the factory and leaves teh factory "stock" only to be called "modded" after the owner or whoever else changes it. but its obvious we are both fans of the vette so i guess we dont need to fight over something so unimportant. :|

Amazing how many people wouldn't give the C5 Z06 the time of day, but now it is fashionable to rave about this new one.. :P

It only has 500 crank hp and weighs the same as the current car... ;)

Besides it's kinda ugly. hehe

Personally I find it a little offensive that this thread I started in “Car Chat” got sent off in its own little “American Muscle” section…

What the hell does “American Muscle” mean anyway?? Ferrari, Koenigsegg, etc. don’t have Muscle?

There are tons of Ferrari and Porsche threads in "car chat"… just look…

That have not been sent to SFDMALEX”Everything related to the Prancing Horse goes in here!”

Or the –
The JW Porsche Expert That Has Even Driven The CGT ! - thread

The Z06 is the biggest GM car in decades but it’s still not good enough for “Car Chat”. Oh well I guess I will get banned for this…

Sorry just an observation..

And American Muscle is just a term dude chill out you know the term Muscle Car well it started here in America so it is called American Muscle. back in the 60's we were pretty much the only ones shoehorning big ass engines in small packages makeing ass loads of power (for the times)

this car looks so much better than the c5. you guys have to be kidding, the c5 was huge and looks way too bulbous compared to the smaller, sleaker, more angular c6...

Complete matter of opinion - I find the C1 ugly, the C2 bizarre, the C3 beautiful, the C4 far too 80's, the C5 perfect and the C6 trying too hard to be what it is not - A eurotrash car. :)

and the c6 doesnt have air brakes on the hood either... ive never understood pop up headlights...
A couple things come to mind - when you deploy your headlights, you are trying to enhance your ability to see, which in and of itself must mean you are driving in less than perfect driving conditions and would have adjusted your speed to suite the conditions i.e. you would have slowed down - so ultimate top speed from low drag is irrelevant. :P

Trust me - I have 56,741,563 more replies to justify every shape nuance and feature of why the C5 is as about as close to perfection as you can get.

But can easily substitute one image for all thos words:
http://img84.echo.cx/img84/6499/zo618ir.jpg
Try as you might - you will never find any image of the C6 from any angle that looks as complete as this.

Every view of the C6 has some nagging design compromise - the tail looks chopped off, the nose look all gawky and smiley, the lights look awkward, the Z06 brake ducts are out of place, the bulbous rear window looks station wagon like and the out of place Cadillac XLR haunches and waist are just plain ugly :P

Now the C6 Z06 goes like hell - but most likely that's because it's trying to outrun it's own reflection.... hehehe :P

that picture is a great example of one of the design flaws i just could never get over with the c5. the front air vent just looks BAD. its looks too "soft" and doesnt flow with the rest of the car. its just seems out of place and and its too much. i think it detracts from the lines of the car. the front vent is probably what i dislike the most about the c5, i dont know what it is, but it just doesnt look right. pretty much every other supercar in the world incorporates its vents better than that one. besides that though, its is a handsome car. i just think that the c6 is a step in the right direction. :D

i just think that the c6 is a step in the right direction. :D

A step in what direction? For the car to look more like a Ferrai? To look more like a Viper? To look more like an NSX?

The car has it's own unique identity and has been around as a single model longer than any other sports car in the world.

Why does everyone keep insisting it should "look like the way the others did it"?

:(

And BTW, we don't call them "air vents" - they are gills... thank you very much.

my sincerest apologies... "gills". as far as looking like those previously mentioned cars, i dont think it does at all. the c6 has vette written all over it and i dont think it could ever be mistaken for anything else (and i wouldnt want it to be). as far as dimensions, the c6 is closer in size to the original vette i do believe. in that respect the c5 was straying from the original idea of the corvette. it was too big and GT'ish.

dude the first thing I said when I saw a C6 sneek peak was they stole those lights from a 360 that car stole soo many design elements, the lights from Ferrari, ram air grill from Viper, just all those little things but shit I would still take one anyday of the week then sell it for a C5 Z06 and mod the piss out of it with the extra $30 grand, I'm more about performance than appearance that's why I would drive a primer grey and bondoed car if it went like stink.

no one stole anything from those cars. the designers didnt say, " wow, i really like those lights on the ferrari, we'll just just use those..." after a while with certain trends cars are going to share similar features. thats just how it is. you rarely ever have a completely new car with all completely new features, and if you did, everyone would bitch that it didnt recognize its heritage. and what exactly are you implying anyway? that its not an "original" car, that its uninspired, that its just a copy of its contemporaries? its fine if you dont like the looks of the car, i said i dont like a lot of the c5, but to brush it off as some uninspired copy or hodgepodge of other cars is not right. its a lot more than that, and if you ask me, youre giving the other cars too much credit :D.

I love the coupe, but the one problem is the lazy way out they chose with the targa top. It's bolted in, but unless you get black (really the only color any car should be--see sig), the panel gap is going to disgust you.

By the way, save for the watermark, those pictures are great. I love the way the Z06 looks. For some reason it looks like what they meant to do with the base C6, especially with the fender treatment.

i personally really like the lines of the C6. when i first saw the pictures i was a little dissappointed, in that i wanted more radical of a design change but when i finally saw it in person i really liked the design. i could see the size of the car andi like that they made it more compact, i think it looks like the C5 went on a nice diet and went to the gym. the rear looks better proportioned to the rest of the car and so what if it borrows design cues from other cars, it still looks plenty like a corvette to me.

The upgrades are minor.

Apart from the aluminium frame and the few extra strengthening pieces to compensate for the loss of riidity - all the rest of the "improvements" are nothing much.

Sure they look good on paper "carbon fibre fenders", drilled & slotted brake rotors, 6 piston caliper brakes, in-dash DVD/NAV, 'bigger wheels" to appeal to the bling, a "hand built" engine... (BTW, last I checked every single other 427ci C5 Z06 also has a hand assembled engine :)).

So - essentially you have a factory built car that has about 85-90% of the performance of a tuner built 427ci T1 tuned car.

The "factory" car will be no more reliable than the tuner car, and will probably prove to be slower and we know will cost way more ;)

Besides which - I feel sorry for the first sucker (sucker because they will be paying a super-premium on top of the price already) who takes their car to a GM dealer for "repair"... :P

The real reason I am so interested in the performance numbers of the C6 Z06, is that I like many folks have been saying the tuned C5 Z06's have super car performance and will run and gun with Prosches and Ferraris best - but non-believers doubted us - but now we see that the performance is there. ;)

The C5 Z)6 get's driven and enjoyed - the C6 Z06 is going to end up like most F-Cars, P-Cars, L-Cars and even many Vipers - the cars costs enough to justify hardly ever driving and enjoying it. :P

yea youre right, aluminum frame and dry sump... theyre completely minor

anyway, the reason no one cares whether or not your modded c5 is competitive with real supercars is the same reason you dont care whether or not a modded mustang or civic is competitive with your z06. it just doesnt matter. it might matter for you personally if you feel like you need to be justified beyond the way your car feels and performs by how the new z06 performs, but beyond that, no one really cares. your car is the old gen. i mean how many people gave a shit about modded c4s. the c5 z06 is a great car and always will be. but the c6 z06 will most likely be a greater car, as it should be. the last thing gm needs right now is to start acting like ferrari. they dont want their "f50" to be slower than their "f40" haha.

Well - they are rather, if the performance is easily matched on the current car.

What good is the aluminium frame if the weight savings are lost in extra rigidity needed to be added? You know the car weighs the same as the current car - correct?

Spoken like a true magazine racer ;) Last time I looked only yuppies and posers seem to keep chasing the "latest & greatest" ;) And the chance of a moded street ready Musang or Civic being any threat to any sports car is zero :)

The point is that the C6 and the C6 Z06 have been Eurothanized just for every "new comers" pleasure ;) (thats all the "creature comforts for the pooftas" :P)

your car is the old gen. i mean how many people gave a shit about modded c4s. the c5 z06 is a great car and always will be. but the c6 z06 will most likely be a greater car, as it should be. the last thing gm needs right now is to start acting like ferrari. they dont want their "f50" to be slower than their "f40" haha.

And the point is that you have to make some significant changes to a C4 (even ZR1) to let it run and gun with the C5 Z06 - however, the C6 and C6 Z06 is not really anything revolutionary (otherwise the C5 Z would not be so easily able to reach the same levels ;)) - and is rather just GM releasing factory versions of all the very same HotRod mods that the Corvette community has been applying to the C5 Z06 for the last 4 years.

:)

That is the point.

Just because the new gen came out, doesn't slow the old one down - it simply goes on to confirm that the C6 (and C6 Z06) is rather a C5.5 - because the changes that they made are not far off the C5.

You would have no hope in hell of simply modding the last gen M5 to the current E60 M5 - that's how HUGE and significant the changes are.

However, those in the know realise that while the C6 and the C6 Z06 have some "neat factory" tweaks - they are nothing that hasn't already been done by the mod and racing community to improve the C5 and C5 Z06. ;)

See - the latest Corvette has not obsoleted the current car (like the Germans and Italians like to do :P) but again - is simply validation of what the community & tuners did to their cars.

The Corvette community is not like the yuppie driven F, P and L car brigade, where they all look down on the "older models" because they are "slower and cheaper". We rather embrace all versions ;) - even if that means getting all pissy with the factory because could not improve on what the privateer and tuner community has been doing for the lat 4 years.

Yes - that is correct - the C6 Z06 is NOTHING radical on over almost every modded C5 Z06. :)

Doesn't show too well for GM - does it? When the communtiy and tuners have already "been there - done that" ;)

how can you compare tuned c5 z06s with stock c6s? i know youve done this many times and in many arguments but its not fair. tuners have a hell of a lot less to worry about than gm does. gm has many more regulations and standards to meet. you can say that your modded c5 is as good as the c6 z06 until you are blue in the face, and you MIGHT be correct, we'll have to wait and see. all im saying is that it doesnt matter. i do agree with you that the new c6 isnt as revolutionary as the c5 was or as teh new m5 is, but not every car changes so radically with each new generation. look at the evo's or even the 911s.

see this discussion isnt about YOU and YOUR car. YOU are perfectly happy with your modded c5 and would be perfectly happy if it ends up being as good as teh c6 z06 and will be perfectly happy putting down the c6 because of that. but in the end, most consumers dont care if that is true. not everyone wants a modded car, most people dont. and as far as stock for stock goes, the c6 z06 will definitlvely beat the c5s...

There is no need to mod a C5 Z06 to take on a C6 Z51 - the stock C5 Z06 has it beat already.

Although you will be hard pressed to find a stock C6 Z51 among my driving friends, so it is already a moot point.

These cars are modded to moment they are driven home. The C6 Z51 is modded to bring it to the C5 Z06 standard.... ;)

*shrug*

Hhmm.. the circles I move in every WANTS a modded car - and most have modded their C5 Z)6 and their new C6 Z51.

The stock vs tuned is actually a lot more valid than people care to admit - stock vs stock is a bench racer/magazine racer thing.

Car vs Car is what happens on the street and at DE events.

Run what you brung. :)

The truth is, you will struggle to find a bone stock car amongs my driving acquaintances. Hell even the girls who own C5 Z06's are putting 425+rwhp down (thats 500 crank HP for the uninformed.,.. ;))

Just the same way if I run across a Viper on the streets in Houston. there is way more chance that it is modded for more power than not - so I had better have something to show if I want to even think of tangling with him/her. :P

That's the reality. Many Ferraris in this town run at least a free flowing exhaust, if not ECM changes - so they are no longer stock. And I don't think I have seen a Murci or Gallardo that didn't have some exhaust work done.

The only people running stock are guys with leased cars - and they are more than likely only running their mistress to the opera and can't drive their cars anyway ;)

I take back my vote - your banner sucks ;) :P

But - anyway, everyone misses the only strong point of the C6 Z06 - and that is in homologation form for various racing series they did what Honda has done for ages with their bikes (the RC30 and RC45 in particular - to a lesser degree with the RC51) - and that is to engineer and then sell some out of place but robust components to allow for their inclusion in the car for stock class racing.

This has the advantage of putting the normal "addons" that class racing sometimes disallows, like wider wheels, bigger brakes, and extra cooling components - but the desided disadvantage that the budget privateer can no longer campaing the car/bike because the factory addons are much more expensive than the original stock parts.

I use the C5 Z06 brakes as an example - T1/Solo I (I think thats the class designation) you have to run stock brakes - which is not really a problem, because although the roptors only last one race session, maybe 2, they are very capable and dirt cheap - about $40 per rotor. Calipers are also cheap, and the 2 pads per wheel not a problem.

Now enter the C6 Z06 with cross/drilled vented, slotted, hyper bling-worthy rotors, and 20, count them 20 pads and pistons in total - the cost of brake consumables alone will most likely hit the budget racer hard.

The brakes are better than the C5 Z06, but do not eclipse them, and much like the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes - don't really justify the cost for the occasional user. Which I guess is why many Porsche guys swap the PCCB's for the regualr ones to save throwing money down the crapper.

Of course the new car is quicker - but it by no means obsoletes the old car - and this may be a foreign notion to "newer is good older is bad" generation.. :P

There is a reason for the HUGE (and non-HotRod fans have no idea how HUGE) after market for the LS1/LS6 powerplant - it is just that good. :)

Couple this with the already great platform of the C5 Z06 you can see that the C6 Z06 is not the be all and end all.

STrange how until this year NOBODY wanted to give the C5 Z06 the time of day - but now that the C6 Z06 is here, it suddenl;y is the ONLY platform worthy of recognition - when in reality it is the car that GM should have built 5 years ago, but didnt - so the enthusiast and racing community built if for them. They just copied what was already there :P ;)

There is no need to mod a C5 Z06 to take on a C6 Z51 - the stock C5 Z06 has it beat already.

Although you will be hard pressed to find a stock C6 Z51 among my driving friends, so it is already a moot point.

These cars are modded to moment they are driven home. The C6 Z51 is modded to bring it to the C5 Z06 standard....

yea i know, i was talking about the z06, i guess i forget to say it. we've been talking about z06s the whole time. and yes, ive known about the c5 z06 since its inception. and no i dont think the c6 is just head and shoulders above teh c5, but it is better and obviously so. there isnt really a whole lot of substance to this right now, except for you misinterpreting the degree to which i state things. and "run what you brung" isnt exactly like that. you know people will discuss mods and so on. it all leads back to what it was like stock. i know this is killing you, and dont give me that shit about the z06 just being a "modded" base vette either bc thats just silly, but i dont care that the "circles you run in" mod their cars. not everyone does and if you are comparing cars (which i guess this discussion is still about) you do it stock vs stock. there isnt a hell of a lot else to it.

That's the definition of bench racing. I know my car isn't the quickest on the street or track - the fastest car belongs to the guy/girl with the deepest pockets - period :)

No it's not killing me - if it was I wouldn't have lept my "slow 385hp 2001 Z06" - I would have upgraded to the '02, '03 or '04 405hp car ;) - I don't NEED the latest an greatest to thoroughly enjoy my car.

And - where have I ever said the Z06 is "just" a modded Coupe? By it's very nature it requires not easily duplicated changes - in the C5 Z06 it is the FRC body that lends extra rigidity, and in the C6 Z06 it is the fixed roof panel that provides this torsional rigidity lost with using the aluminium frame.

This "circles I run in" is the reality of LS1/LS6 and LS2(and probably LS7) communities all over the country.

In Houston, I have yet to see a stock GTO, or CTS-V for that matter - even if only ehaders, or intake or tuning - THAT is the reality. ;)

Again - it is "run what you brung" - and the discussion of "stock vs stock" is only of significance when magazine and bench racing and playing card games. ;)

In a stock for stock discussion my car would kick Coloroadosilvers C5 Coupe from Texas all the way back to Colorado - but what point is a "stock for stock" discussion? His car ust about put down more power at idle than my does at 6000rpm.

Again, on the street and track it is "car vs car" - no bullshit, no excuses - :)

And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduce that the factory C6 Z06 is ismply a - you guessed it, hotrod 427ci big cam, heads and cam car. ;)

Well - sad to say, the C6 Z51 is nothing but a modded C5 Z51, and the changes are easily taken care of in that department ;)

Take our own Coloradosilver as an example - his modded C5 coupe will kick the leaving bezeeezus out of my car - period... :P (in a strainght line ;))

Now his car with a Z06 shock and sway bar, Z06 wheel and tyre ugrade will run with me in the twisties and anihilate me on the straights - the beating he would hand down to a stock C6 Z51 would be just as painful.. ;) - only thing is still looks like a staiton wagon with that big-ol hatch out back  :P ;)

I have been in the woods and tried to run and gun with suspension modded/heads cam C5 Z51's - and it is not easy to overcome the extra 100hp they have.

I guess it hard for non-Vett drivers to appreciate just how good the C5 is. It is not a "bad" car - it is a compromised car, whose compromises are easily and cheaply dispatched with.

We are talking by orders of magnitude cheaper than BMW or Porsche.

And the number one reason why comparing modded to stock to modded is valid is because the OTHER guy you run into on the street is probably not stock anyway - so the "debate" is limited to magazine racers :P ;)

Driving reality is a lot different - you rarely meet up with a stock car.

:)

Now of course the C6 Z51's that are already modded are eclipsing STOCK C5 Z06's - but by the same token the strong modded C5 Z06's not only squash C6 Z51's like bugs, they are already performance equals to the upcoming C6 Z06 - and OF COURSE as soon as the C6 Z06 hits the street, those with deep pockets will mod their cars to Carrera GT and beyond levels in the first month. :P

So again, the modded C5 Z06 vs stock C6 Z06 debate will be moot, because the wealthy punter will again kick your backside back to your mammas basement.. :P hehe

Well, apart from LPE (which is frankly a little over rated ;)) all the tuners are really "moddign the car for someone" so in effect the owner is "doing it himself" - just the same way Jay Leno does :)

He doesn't wrench himself, he just shovels money at the guy who does.

The "self tuners" are really just installing tuner proven formulas themselves. Which is understandable, since few "privateers" have the resources to play with the options until the find the right mix.

Oh - you mean which tuner is doing the work? ;) :P  - I am not at liberty to divulge that at this time - but the rumour is that the same aggressive timetable that was followed for his 455ci GTO will be follwed for the Z06 - as in the car will be torn down with and the mods start with zero miles on.

It's going to be some kind of test bed.

But who really knows, they are just rumours - which seem a little fanciful, but you never know. :)

You dont need a supercharged Vette for a 100mph cruise speed down the highway.

Ahh but by analogue Enzo is also not not a "company"

Chevrolet is who makes your car...you know...daewoo

But anyway...Ferrari is well known for not compromising on cars...they put enough power in every car to match the chassis, and make the car well balanced. Obviously this is possible for them as they are a low volume manufacturer...but you have to pay the price for a ferrari. Corvette's in recent years have gotten to be great cars, not "uhh, it's great for america!!11" but actually great cars. If the community feels a bigger powerplant is needed, so be it...as long as you upgrade the handling as well :)

People seem to be against this whole modding thing on this forum...but for a car like the vette it only makes sense. After all, daewoo have to make 25,000 of these a year  Obviously they can't spend as much time on them as Ferrari would on an Enzo...but because they make so many the vette has spawned a large community dedicated to making vette even better than daewoo ever could

I dont race on the street, I wont race on the street. When I am alone, concentrating on my driving, doing a 100-110mph cruise down the highway I dont need an uber supercar with 600bhp. All I need is 360, a stock Z06 or an M3, or some Porker. If I drive a four banger then there will always be somebody faster  I still want that Ferrari noise, handling and power, but sorry Ill keep my Enzo for the track.

Dont get me wrong, I sure as hell want one, but Im not going to be driving my Enzo @100 on the highway, it's a sin, it should be double that  So If I had some blown Vette or an Enzo I'd sit in it, and drive it to Mosport which is an hour and a half outside the city.

A car from a marque like Ferrari or Porsche leaves the factory and it should not be touched. It's balance is just right, its power/torque curves are what the engineers intended them to be.

When you take a Vette and stick 300 extra BHP in it you tottaly kill the cars balance, very much like these high powered miatas.

If you are going to take the car to the limit(sorry highway and street runs dont apply) with all that extra power you better have worked on the chassis, on the gearbox and the rest.

Now tell me, why not just get a different car if your going to change half the stock parts anyway?

I just dont fucking get it sorry. Cars have categories for a reason.

The Z06 is a fine well balanced sports car. It has the ability to keep up with many cars in its power range,it doesnt need anything more. The C5 race chassis at least are praised to be some of the best in that they are easy to drive and half great balance.

By blowing that Z06 all you do is just kill a fine sports car. If your not looking for a well balanced sports car buy a Saleen S7.

Someone will tell me now "but how expensive the S7 is" well if your argument is that you want hyper car perfomance from your Vette then you will need to spend as much on that car as you would on a stock S7. And in the end what do you have? A Vette trying to be something its not.

Its like Koenig making these 700bhp 360s.......That is the most retarted thing I ever heard. The max that 360 chassi can handel still keeping the same balance would be 25bhp, beyond that you would have to stiffen it up.

So all this hardcore modding is useless to me. 100bhp max over stock, and that would most likely be pushing the envelope.

And guys, if GM thought the Vette needed an extra 100bhp they'd make that 100bhp, in this day an age its possible, and clearly not hard from what you guys are saying, that the Vette can achieve that with some bolt ons.

My opinion, dont try to argue it. In my view this over the board modding is stupid.

A car from a marque like Ferrari or Porsche leaves the factory and it should not be touched

Then why do Porsche themselves offer upgrades such as the X50 pack?

Now tell me, why not just get a different car if your going to change half the stock parts anyway?

Because it's part of American car culture. Modding cars is abosultely nothing new. My grandfather used to tell me about his hotrodding days.

By blowing that Z06 all you do is just kill a fine sports car.

Not if you are willing to "re-balance" the car. Which I'm sure most people do. Don't forget, drag racing is huge business here.

Anyone hear about the guy in Germany sueing Ferrari because his 360CS isn't as fast as claimed?

My opinion, dont try to argue it.

aw hell, thats the fun of a message board isnt it?

A car from a marque like Ferrari or Porsche leaves the factory and it should not be touched. It's balance is just right, its power/torque curves are what the engineers intended them to be.

Its like Koenig making these 700bhp 360s.......That is the most retarted thing I ever heard. The max that 360 chassi can handel still keeping the same balance would be 25bhp, beyond that you would have to stiffen it up.

pretty much agreed

Someone will tell me now "but how expensive the S7 is" well if your argument is that you want hyper car perfomance from your Vette then you will need to spend as much on that car as you would on a stock S7.

And in the end what do you have? A Vette trying to be something its not.

you definitly dont need to spend 400,000 dollars to make your vette up to supercar levels. how does supercharging a vette throw the dynamics of the car out of wack. yes you need supporting mods but they are well within reasonable price. i am pretty sure a blown Z06 handles much like a stock one (just make sure to save up for some tires  ) does and is just fine with an extra 150hp. and now it has the power to keep up with almost anything in the straights. plus some people are passionate about certain makes or models, so they want to make them the best they can be.

and as for even lower models like a mustang or camaro, those cars dont have well engineered chassis dynamics and balance to begin lol (well comparitively to higher end cars) so you are not really throwing anything out of balance hehe, except for the transmission :P

some people cant afford F430s, but still want to experience that level of performance and can afford a used 2002 z06 and a blower for it, so i dont see the problem with wanting to make your car faster.

even on a different scale, some people cant afford a C5 Z06, but can afford a 03 cobra with intake and exhaust :D some cant afford a 03 cobra but can afford an older 5.0L and so on.....you get what i am saying

D00de I have no problem modding a car, to a certain limit. The X50 pack is nothing extreme. 300extra bhp is.

Re-read my post, upgrade all you want, but why waist the money on blowing and rebalincing, why not simply buy a faster car?

I know the Hot Rodding culture, but correct me if Im wrong, but Hot Rodders werent really road course racers, they modded their cars so they can go fast as straight as possible, dont need much chassi work there. And no I have nothing against going straight, its just not my cup of tea.

We are talking about a sports car, which is supposed to turn, left and right. Saying it again. That Vette with 300extra bhp wont make any use of that power unless you tottaly redo the chasis, which brins me to the point, why not just get something faster?

You miss the point mate. No one is saying there is something wrong with making the car faster. Make it faster, but increasing the power will just make it faster going straight. If going straight is your thing. All power to you.

You have to understand that extra 300bhp of stress on the chassis is a lot. The car will never have the handling it had prior. Again, Im not talking a 100bhp upgrade here, Im talking about these overboard Vettes.

So you spend money on the engine, then you need to strip the car to reinforce the whole chassis. Im not sure, but to me that sounds like hell a lot of man hours. If you give up your Vette to a pro shop, to get it customized Im sure the money youll spend in the end just could have got you a faster car.

Because it's still extraordinarily cheaper. Why buy a 997 Carrera when a Z06 is faster for half the price?

I know the Hot Rodding culture, but correct me if Im wrong, but Hot Rodders werent really road course racers, they modded their cars so they can go fast as straight as possible, dont need much chassi work there. And no I have nothing against going straight, its just not my cup of tea.

Plenty of people built/modded cars for road racing. You also have to take into account the almost complete lack of road course venues at the time. Whereas, drag strips were everywhere and doing it on the street was largely ignored.

We are talking about a sports car, which is supposed to turn, left and right. Saying it again. That Vette with 300extra bhp wont make any use of that power unless you tottaly redo the chasis, which brins me to the point, why not just get something faster?

300bhp more than stock will make it a ton faster with or without chassis refinements. There is nothing wrong with the chassis on a Vette, minimal improvements can be made, but not without a huge cost. There are plenty of people driving 600rwhp Vettes with no chassis mods, it doesn't need it.

So why not get soemthing faster?

1. $$$$$$ You seem to be forgetting the fact that very few people have the ability to buy an F40. A whole lot of people can afford to run and modify a Vette.

2. Because you can buy something like a Corvette, modify it and run with just about anything out there, without going to town with chassis modifications.

/\/\/\Well they make it out of magic if the chassis doesnt need any extra work with 800bhp....honestly man....how can that be? Sure it can run, I wanna see how well it will run Laguna Seca with 800bhp on no chassis mods.

The F40 is too old for this argument. An Enzo is more appropriate, and the Vette will never run as fast as the Enzo, espeicaly without any work on the chassis.

Anyway I hate to brake it to you, but if you really want fast and cheap, your Vette is a wrong car. You should look into the Japaniese scene, cause sadly, those 1000bhp Skylines and Supras are some of the fastest things around...although Id much rather have a modded Vette.

Anyway there is no point in aruing further. Read my posts, see my messege, not here to change people opinions.

The C5 uses a hydroformed box-cross section steel h-frame chassis. When combined with the FRC Z06 body it is so rigid if you drive down over a speed bump or driveway curb the car will lift the 3rd wheel into the air - the chassi has no detectable flex at all.

500, 600, 700hp does nothing to flex anything.

Combine this with T1 sway bars and shocks and leafs or a coil-over shock setup to hanlde the higher corner speeds - put on sticky rubber and guess what youhave???

The C5R - thats right - the same rolling chassi ;)

Not really - the C5R would stomp the Enzo :P - point proven ;)

No - you don't get it - the C5R uses the C5 chassis - it is THE SAME component.

In other words, to have a C5R on the street you simply add hp and 1 upgrade the shocks and springs, sticky tyres and you are far closer to the C5R than $200,000 worth of mods to a 550 will get you to a ProDrive 550.

That's the point ;) - adding 300hp to a C5 Z06 just wakes it up :P - it doesn't "unbalance" it ;)

Oh just one more thing.

That only further proves my point. Not many people can own an F40, even fewer can own an Enzo. Hmmm, $65k versus $1million+

I wonder how the TT Lingenfelter would do against the Enzo? 725bhp, 0-60mph in 3.2, 230+mph, thats one serious car.

Anyway, have fun, and mod your Vette till you just cant mod it no more. Im flatered with what you have to go through to """""BEAT A FERRARI"""""

You don't have to do anything to beat a Ferrari. A stock C5 Z06 has and will run quicker laps that many Ferrari's. Against an Enzo, no it wouldn't. But with the proper work, it surely could be done.

Hey RC, how much do C5R crate motors cost? $25k or so?
With the prices on C5's plummeting due to the C6, you could build yourself one hell of a car for less than $65k No wonder the C6 Z06 is considered a waste of money by so many people! LOL

Just checked Lingenfelter's website, $26.5k for the C5R engine. Thats 550bhp and 550ft lb torque.

Time to go back to school and get me one of them careers.

IMO it doesnt matter how much has or hasnt to be done for other cars to beat a ferrari, theyre faster than most of the cars and 10 times more exclusive. If you want a fast cheap car get a Z06 and mod it to beat an Enzo, but you wont get the same feeling as in owning an Enzo.

yea, its a car. people around here think that ferraris are some special being only slightly below homo sapiens. its just a machine man. its a tool a race car driver uses to get around a track as quickly as possible - whether it be a z06 or a ferrari. youre right, apparently i dont get it, and that doesnt bother me. and no, if a modded 350z beat me in my z06 i wouldnt laugh at him for having a modded car that was cheaper than mine. i probably wouldnt do a whole lot at all. if i talked to him id ask him about his mods. what kind of person he was would probably determine what i thought about hte situation. if he was a douche bag and made fun of my car for having pushrods or some shit then id probably tell him to go eat a dick, but besides that, not much else to it.
