... now this is surely the DUMBEST idea to have been conceived.

[I searched and didn't find this alredy posted - lock if the topic already exists]

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4610755.stm

Drivers could pay up to £1.34 a mile in "pay-as-you go" road charges under new government plans.
The transport secretary said the charges, aimed at cutting congestion, would replace road tax and petrol duty.

Alistair Darling said change was needed if the UK was to avoid the possibility of "LA-style gridlock" within 20 years.

Every vehicle would have a black box to allow a satellite system to track their journey, with prices starting from as little as 2p per mile in rural areas.

what a stupid idea. It was mentioned on last season's TG as I can remember

it will work in the same way mexicans that live in the capital have to suffer because of air pollution
This plan is called "hoy no circula", in english something like this: "today your car can't go out"
so by your license plate you had a day of the week in which you could not take out your car. Some cars couldn't do it on mondays, others on tuesdays and so on.
at the beggining it worked, but ppl had the money to buy another car to replace the one that couldn't go out.
Now imagine, the city went from 1.5 million cars to 2.5 in 5 years :| and now we are at 3 million cars only from the capital city, not counting the other million that come from the suburbs

in UK ppl at the start of that program will stop using their cars, but as I read in the article, they won't be paying road tax and petrol duty... so it's almost the same
teens and ricers will now have more reasons to burn and smoke their tires. Petrol would be cheap and they would not be travelling more than a hundred yards

That's a rather stupid plan. First of all, it would cost millions to get theose little black boxes in every car. And what rules woulld apply for tourists entering the UK in their cars??

The minister of transport is a dick IMO.

What a load of fucking bull shit.

Just what i was thinking.... i'm learning to drive at the moment, and this sort of shit pissesd me off! I want to have the same freedom that people for generations before me have enjoyed. :(

Why not whack the duty on fuel.... we will still buy it if it's £1.00 per litre. Maybe even a bit less... that would cause us to think (a little) more about how much we use our cars. Not some fucking BS scheme to stop you going to work.

And as for black boxes.... not a fucking chance of them getting one in my car :|

Plain stupidity.what happens to people who live a fair way from a hospital? what if there is no time to call an ambulance? same goes for other trips like holidays, food shopping? can you imagine everyone gettin on a bus to bring there weekly shop home?

there are so many things that they just aint thought of,it wont work for the simple fact it would cost a fortune to drive your car

i have a place up in the hills were i liek to drive the roads to the top of a hill and look at the view.......if i wanted to to that with this stupid rule coming in at £1.34 a mile,it would cost me £24.12 to do that....that would suck

i cant imagine this bein a good thing and i agree with what jon said

If LA doesn't mind LA-style gridlock, why make such a big deal.

Apparently people value their freedom of movement more than a tax on driving, even if it means gridlock.

What's next? A walking tax?

I propose a motion for the public hanging of Alistair Darling, and compensation for those of us who have to continually be subjected to the absolute crap this man produces.

How about you just disconnect the black box (either permaently or just on long trips) and then they will think you haven't used the car as it didn't record any data..... :)

Great idea - except the high density network of video cameras will have witnessed and recorded you leaving your house and generate a summons to appear in court for taking an unauthorised sh1t in a neighbouring county... ;) :P

I don't reckon it'll ever happen, to enforce it would be amazingly hard and it would be so easy to just remove the tracker from the car or jam the signal.

Also, it'll hurt the UK economy pretty bad.

I doubt it'll happen ever, if it does i'll eat my hat.

But - doesn't just having to fend off such absolutly idiotic ideas not indicate some other inherent flaw in the man? (maybe even the system that let him in... :P)

How on earth does someone so devoid of mental capacity get to advance to a position of public influence and rule?

Do people regulary cast a vote for this chap? Or is he some appointed twit that just slipped through the cracks.

Surely people as stupid as him should be barred from breeding... :)

That means you wouldn't have to pay a fortune if you don't drive in downtown London.

I still wouldn't want a damn GPS tracker on my car though. :fist:

Think of the traffic ticket potential.

THey could send you parking tickets, speeding tickets and left turn tickets :)

Mr Plod would love that system... ;)

and thats exactly why the majority are so against it. What the government say now in public may be far different to their intentions. I can see the day where speeding fines are automatic, until we all loose our licenses then they might have to rethink that one. It all seems a little far off now, trial in 5 years full system maybe 10+ but really we should start the movement against it now IMO. This scheme does have elements of fairness, however in equal measure it penalises people for living in certian areas and having certain jobs. The existing system in place is far from perfect, however it is far more preferable than this big brother box

Why does there even need to be "a system"?

The government should be "serving the people" - no the people "being servants to the government".

The irony is that 15 years from now, China might be the model of large scale freedom of economy, movement and entrepreneurship - while the "western" countries are all replicas of the old Soviet system... hehehe

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but i believe when parliament opened in the UK they wanted to pass a 'citizen card' that everyone would carry with all there information on.. it's to make everything safer...

seems the united kingdom is turning into a police state..

Yeh they still want to get ID cards in, they didn't manage it in time during the last parliament, funnily enough little was heard of this during the election, but now they have signalled their dertermination to bring them in by publishing a slightly revised bill recently. I also read this will cost some stupid amount. Quite frankly it seems a knee jerk reaction to the hugely overblown illegal immigration, identity theft and terrorism threats. Have to admit i'm worried where we're heading right now! Also there is bound to be some way to fake these cards i guess. Like copy protection on DVDs kinda pointless

They want to do the ID card thing here too.

We have a similar system here in Minnesota, the news says it's the only one in the country. It's entirely voluntary though, you get this little radio transmitter and a special lane to drive in on certain highways. Basically, you don't have to sit in traffic, just whizz on by. The rates can be anything from $.25 to $8 depending on how bad traffic is.
It just started a few days ago, they are already having a ton of problems with it.

BTW, it's a $130 ticket if you get caught driving in the lane without the transmitter. Luckily there are no cameras to catch you, you have to be caught by the highway patrol.

I'd be pissed if I had to pay to drive on the roads. I already paid for the damn things with taxes. Here's an idea, get a dirtbike and drive in the ditch.

Honestly, if they wanted to cut congestion, the solution(s) are simple.

Build more roads, even a second level of highway built on top of the existing one, or underneath it, just like they did with trains and trams.

But of course, they won't do that... because it costs them money, and it doesn't help them make any in return.

England has already turned into a police state. Clarkson was stopped while he was driving because he was smoking in his car. Apparently it is no longer allowed.

I've already told the missus that if (when?) our business allows it, I'm moving back to New York City, and she's coming along.

For some odd reason, I was less harassed there. :|
