The engine winner in category 2.5-litre to 3-litre has been driven, 535d, 272hp and 560Nm. More torque than the M5 E60. And tell you the truth, this is the first modern diesel I ever driven.
Start the engine and you can hear a little noise that this is a diesel but when you drive away, you won't notice it anymore.

The car had almost everything, M-package and even head-up display and that was a cool thing. Look out of the window and you can see how fast you can go. I never driven a car with head-up display before but I liked it, you dont have to look down to see how fast you go, just look at the window.

The best part with this car is the engine. I'm telling the truth here but 545i owners and even M5 E39 owners should be careful, do a kick-down and I can honestly tell you, 545i and M5 owners are going to have some serious problems with this car. The force is awesome and you can feel how you being pushed back in the seat.

There are tuners out there for this car, one of them offer a 360hp with 700Nm, I'm sure this car will be faster than a M5 E39.

If V8 isnt important, 545i owners should try this car cause you going to be impressed. You are saving a lot of fuel costs too if you choose a 535d over a 545i.

I definitly take a 535d over 530i. 535d is much faster than 530i, I really enjoyed kickdowns in the diesel

Yes a mate of mine has also driven one and was as impressed as you are. But i canīt really believe that an M5 would have any problems to beat the car in terms of speed, maby the 545i but not the M5. BTW Mercedes soon launches the E 420 CDI, the most powerful V8 diesel in a saloon car today offering 316bhp (iīm not sure about the torque but it is more than 700nm IMO)

..and that E 420 CDI will go from 0-100km/h in 6.2sec. Diesels of today are just insane. I guess BMW will launch some new V8 diesel rather soon to compete with Mercedes.

Heard some rumors about the next S-Class and a close to 400bhp diesel V12.

The new M5 wont have a problem but I wouldnt be surprised if M5 E39 are going to have problems against a 535d. Let say you driving 120km/h with both 535d and M5 E39 and you both change gear at the same time then I wouldnt be surprised if it was close between 535d and M5 E39. Maybe the M5 E39 would be a little bit faster but Im not so sure the distance between them would be huge.

And a tuned 535d with 360hp and 700Nm I belive it would pass the M5 E39.

Now I only wish this engine came to 3-serie and it would be a rocket :D

The e39 M5 will definately be faster if the driver manages to keep the revs where the engine produces its maximum horsepower which will require obviously more skill and effort. So the 535d might be easier to go fast and accelerate when required in everyday driving but i do not believe its the faster car between them.

Torque and Hp goes hand in hand, u can't just have alot of one thing and claim to beat the other. You need Horsepower as much as u need torque and vice versa.

I remember the old comparison in Sportauto, 535d vs 545i.

Look at "Elastizität"

535d is little faster than 545i :D

^ Yeah, Americans and tree huggers still have the mentality that Diesels are terrible for the environment.

It's their entire way of thought. We'll probably never get real Diesel cars here. Looks like we are moving closer and closer towards hybrids more than anything else.
