First some new and old stuff. And a video.

Here are a few items from Dave Hill's presentation on the C6 Z06 at the C5/6 Registry Birthday Bash in Bowling Green, Ky. Some old stuff, some new stuff....
The top speed will be substantially above 190 MPH.
The fender badge will show 505 HP.
Quarter mile on street tires in mid 11's.
The car has been tested on several race tracks with over 1,750 laps at top speed. Drivers included C6R team, and GM test people.
The car magazines will get a production built car for testing in July.
Next week they will air ship a production built car to Nurburing for testing.
93 octane is the recommended gasoline to use.
The car will have heavier duty half shafts, than the C5 Z06.
The rear axle ratio will be 3.42.
Car will be available with 6-speed manual only.
the aftermarket would be able to do better than this exhaust system.
the Zo6 could take a higher lift camshaft without any problems, saying the pistons have extra valve reliefs built in from the factory to accomodate a new higher duration cam with more lift.
they brought along a dyno sheet that appeared to be an engine dyno, 505hp and 470lb-ft, and 400ft. lbs all the way across the board from 2400 rpms on up.
Xm anttena aids in downforce
The crate motor LS7 would be around $15,000
The Z06 will use the same 6 spd as the base C6, not the optional Z51 gearing.
Front brake cooling improved over C5 Z06 by a multiple of 5 and rear improved by a multiple of 2.
Front fascia scoop operable and testing shows main benefit is to reduce air temperature entering engine...not so much to increase airflow due to bends in design necessary to eliminate possibility of water ingestion.
Downforce has been optimized and adding a rear wing or full width rear spoiler will negatively affect balance without changing size of front splitter, etc. A general principle but the engineers emphasized this issue when talking about raised height of the C6 Z06 rear CMSL, size of front splitter, etc.
Lowering the new Z06 to improve looks/stance will upset the balance achieved but if you do be very careful not to exceed the "magic number" of 3/4 inches or the performance loss outweighs aesthetic benefit. Also, be aware the C6 sits lower in front versus rear, unlike the C5.
They are working on a new "steel blue" color as shown on slides during presentation. Didn't say what model year it might appear.
Horsepower to weight ratio of the best (6.2lbs to 1hp) the exotic car makers have as only the Enzo and the mega dollar Porsche were superior.
No price release til June or July
There will not be a horse power bump in the 2007 Z06, there will not be a 525hp or 550hp 2007.

Now thats hardcore, like NSX Type-R hardcore. It sounds great in that video, we just need to see a comparison of it against the Viper Coupe, and maybe someday we'll see the Blue Devil. Thanks graywolf!!!

^^^ And there in lies the beauty of the current C5 Z06 as an example.

I get to daily drive a P911TT, F360CS, Gallardo equal for the same price as a generic SUV.

I have the 1/4 mile, handling, 0-60 and topend of the ultra-elite... at nowhere near the cost - so while you and the rest of the wanna-be snobs dream - I drive - 60,000 smiles in 3 years.

In fact tomorrow I will be going for a nce blast through the backroads at 911TT pace - good thing I didn't get that Camry afterall.. :P

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I think that maybe the reason I don't like the Vette so much, all versions, not just the new Z06, is because they're so common and toot the value-for-money horn. But I believe that is what all American cars are. Value. The Vette is a great value. Performance at a cheaper cost. And that's great, but that car is just not for me. I think a lot of Americans like the idea of "Big American Muscle that can stop much higher competition." And again, that's great. To each his own, like in this thread. RC45 is a Vette man, I'm not.

My choice for value for money is BMW's M3. It's a few thousand more than a fully optioned C5 Vette, but it seats four, has an available F1 transmission, looks fantastic, turns heads, excels in all aspects of performance, and draws on a motorsport heritage that is few and far between in the auto industry.

Besides the fact that I turned down an M3 as an option because it is not in the performance range I wanted - and I have no desire to have a 4 seater for my back road blasting enjoyment.

In fact I see very few four seaters (or P-cars or even F-cars) out enjoying the back roads - and the only 4 seaters I see are STi/EVO/M3's which are sacrificing far too much for aving te 2 extra seats.

I am a hi-po car enthusiast - so I could never have settled for a non-sports car.

Turns heads? Really? The M3 is about as common as a Honda Civic over here. I also wouldn't say it seats four. Unless the back seat occupants are no taller than 5 foot 6. The styling, though I would consider bland, is in the eye of the beholder so I can't fault you there.

I dont know why, but an M3 always turns my head, love its styling, and the funny thing is that Boxters are more common then M3s here.

I'm sure geographical location plays a huge part, but where I live it's pretty much American car-central. Vette's and Mustang's are so abundant, that they practically blend in with the rest of the traffic. An M3 or other nice foreign car stick out like a sore thumb.

You know you are exagerating for effect - considering they only sold on average 30,000 C5 Vettes a year - TOTAL - for world consumption, with about 7,000 being Z06's (comapred to 100,000+ Mustangs), Corvettes may not be rare, but they are outnumbered by about 100:1 by other cars on the road - do yourself a favour one day and count how many cars you see a day, and then how few are Corvettes - or even BMW M3's or erecdes SLK's or Boxters.

We thnk there are a lot - but there are not.

Well - it's so far out of my price range that would just be an excercise in speculation ;)

No I'm not. I just went outside and counted 239,047,390,824,639,284 cars and of those 2,487,459,873,496 were Corvettes, 89,789 were Ferrari Enzo's, 12,043 were Honda Civics running 9's, there were 15 Mercury Marauder's, 9,120,985,343 Buick Park Avenues and there was one unicorn making a three-point turn in a cul-de-sac. The unicorn was soon pulled over for neighing too loudly and received a $32,376 ticket for noise violation.

Okay, I'm done playing. :P

M3 is a performance car
Z06 is a super car at a performance cars price.
big difference.

Sure the Z06 will be worth half its price in 3 years but thats ok. You dont buy that car for resale value, or head turning looks. You buy it to have a great track/road car for a reasonable price.

Say what you want, it seriously hustles around the track, sounds great, looks gorgeous and (apparently) is eminently driveable. On top of that its something that's attainable. Who cares if there are tons of them on the road, if you're worried about exclusivity, then quite frankly, you're a jackass.

RC45
06-05-2005, 11:01 PM
And the "tons on the road" will still only be about 7000 for the entire production run over the next 3 or 4 years - that should adress the snobs.. ;)

I'll take a z06 over a M3 anyday ...I'll however give a second thought when it is a M5. I am a pratical person, that's why the question "how many days in a year does a M3 carry 4 ppl" raised up instantly. As someone said, Corvette, especially the Z06 is a supercar in performance, and that usually overcome its flaw in interior finish, insurance and well brandname importance.

not trying to bring anything up but by todays standards of a supercar its more of a super sports car. 0-60 at 3.3 1/4 mile at 11.2 and a nice top speed of 212 is a supercar. But the real specs of the Z06 hasn't been officialy released so no arguements here.

actually those are the official performance numbers from the Ford GT but I'm just saying that cars have been moved up a notch. there are alot more cars that go 0 to 60 in 5 seconds and sub latlley and its just fair to say that a car needs to have higher performance numbers to be in a class nowadays.

i dont often make huge quote posts... but here goes one :-P

first, the Ford GT is a 150k supercar... and i love it, and given that i have the money to buy it or the new Z, i will take it. in what way is the FGT standard????!!! 5 seconds to 60 mph is still quite fast... to me saying that 3.x seconds to 60 means that more morons will be killing themselves on the road... seriously, 4.x seconds to 60 is extreamly fast, and hard to control in any car i have ever been in.

the FGT is no standard.. i would offer that the ferrari 355 is still the standard supercar, and in no way will you see it matched by the likes of a clio V6, 350 Z, or Mustang GT. straight line accelleration is only part of the story.

as far as official specs of the Z06, hows this for starters 505hp (508 by my sources) hell, the car hasnt even yet been tested at the Nordschlife yet... let alone, 0 press cars are available... and even when they are, almost always are they dumbed down from the production variant (months of further testing) the more i learn about the new Z, the more i love it! how can any true enthusiast not? what the 'king of the hill' seems ot have done is take his thrown once again with the new Z. as far as i'm concerned, this is the car that will represent this decade, as well as america's other answer to exotic cars.

i also expect a fair amount of these Z's to be modified for club-sport activities specifically... which i base largely on closeness to racing chassis from C4 compared now to the C6

There's only so much grip to street tires, and 3.x seconds is as fast as street legal cars with proper interior goes, so is 11.x 1/4mile time. Yes, most supercar has a high topspeed and as I said in my previous post, corvette is not good at it. What we should focus on is conering ability, braking and the balance of the whole car and corvette has been doing very good in these areas, I'd say when proper review comes out, the z06 will be everbit as good (if not better) than the Ford GT

The upkeep on the Z06 will be far more reasonable than the upkeep on the 360. I buy a performance car to make it perform, not have it sitting in a garage as a collectors item. With that said, the amount of money spent keeping the 360 running like a champ after all the miles put on it, could buy me another Z06.

Out of curiousity did anyone ever test the production ford gt on the track.

There was a huge disparity in the tests by the magazines that makes me sorta question there wasnt a ringer in there somewhere, especially given the weight of the vehicle itself.

well i have seen times ranging from 12.2 (road and track) to 11.2 and 11.6 (motortrend tests) forget what car and driver got but i think it was in the vacinity of high 11s. so yea i see what you are saying about the differing times. and motortrend tested the top speed at 200.1 (which suspiciously was the same car that recorded the 11.2 second 1/4 mile)

i dont think there has been too much doubt that the car is making more than its advertised power just about how much more. i think its safe to say its a mid to high 11 sec car in the 1/4 mile.

I love the new Z06. I think the interior is cheap, but thats not why you buy this car. And for the price, what do you expect on the inside. I would much rather have a car with a little downgraded interrior quality, but can turn numbers with some of the best supercars the world has to offer at 1/4 the price.

I know Clarkson will find things horribly wrong with it just because it's an American car. But I can't wait to see what he has to say when it's beats his precious F430 around their test track.

Go Z06 Go!

Z06 is a super car at a performance cars price.

not trying to bring anything up but by todays standards of a supercar its more of a super sports car. 0-60 at 3.3 1/4 mile at 11.2 and a nice top speed of 212 is a supercar. But the real specs of the Z06 hasn't been officialy released so no arguements here.

Seems like people will do anything to down play the Z06... even trying to split hairs.

Where did you get these arbitrary numbers from?

Its not like you dont do the same thing in the opposite direction

Hell yeah - this is the "leaf spring" forum... :P We do things a little different than over in your "champagne & caviar" forum.. ;) hehe

.......HP Per liter? wtf does that mean?...

Also if the choice were C5 Z06 or 360 CS and i wouldnt have to pay for service then it would go 360 CS, if it were CS and id still have to pay for service well damnit i can work 2 jobs and id get the CS. Now C6 Z06 or 360 CS id go Z06.

yea, i bet they'll sabotage it, or wait until its wet to test it. i can tell you right now that the z06 is a car that they should love. everything they claim they love about cars is there... but theyll trash it bc its a chevy.

Why so doubtful?

Performance wise (by sheer numbers) the Z06 has the F430 beat.

C6 Z06:

$65K
3130.6 Lbs
505 hp

F430:

$190K ish
3197 lbs
490 hp

So the Z06 bests the ferrari in both weight and horsepower numbers. Given all that they've done to the car to make it a very formitable track car, I do believe that the F430 will get beaten by the new Z06.

If you're just looking at the performance for money aspect of it - one would be nothing more than a fool to buy the ferrari. Build quality and refinement are another story, but at nearly 3X the price..I still don't think the ferrari is worth that. Just my opinion there.

i just dont get how people can logically argue about the "reliability" or "quality" of the z06 compared to the ferrari. first of all, just bc its a ferrari doesnt mean it wont break down. have you guys ever read the ferrari forums? they sure as hell have problems, and that shit isnt cheap either. it will break down just like any other car especially if driven daily like the z06. look at it this way, you could have five things go wrong with the z06 for every one thing that went wrong with the ferrari (i doubt this would EVER EVER happen) and it would still cost more to operate the ferrari. who cares about refinement in cars that are so focused on sport? if you want refinement go by a luxury sedan. i dont see how arguments over interior and so forth are even considered. i mean the people buying these cars WILL have other cars for that if they want refinement. if they feel like a soft smooth ride they'll hop into their s class or 7 series... if they want to have fun theyll drive their 430 or z06. saying the ferrari is better bc it is supposedly more refined and has a better interior is like saying youll only shit in the woods if its on a certain plant... it just doesnt fucking matter. the only people who would argue over such things are snobs (or worse, people who will never own either one).

?? ppl who owns Ferrari will for sure have another car to go around town, but that doesn't mean that everytime they drive the Ferrari is at the track where only performance matters. During those times, interior does matter. However, I agree reliability or quality should not be the argument for Z06 vs F430 coz they are such distance in price range, so only performance, handling and livability we should be focusing on.

RC45, I rarely see any Corvettes enjoying my twisties. On the road in my signature, I've only seen motorcycles, and an Evo. One time there was an M3, and another an M5. Never has there been a Corvette. Too bad though. I'm the only SRT-4 I know in the twisties I frequent. Maybe it's not the car but the level of enthusiast who drives it.

Lets just wait and see, I believe that the Z06 wont be able to lap faster then the F430, just a gut feeling plus all the reading I've done on it.

We'll just have to wait a bit for a good head to head test.
