Surprised nobody mentioned it: http://www.autocar.co.uk/news_article.asp?na_id=214900
And before all you bimmer bashers start mouthing off, keep in mind that it was ROVER who first thought about, and drafted, a 4x4 Mini. BMW apparently is looking into the idea to answer the problem of space in current Mini's, and cash in on the rising popularity of crossover vehicles.
Although admittedly, I would find it very strange to see a "Mini" towering over my 1-series. :|

The Americans who created the demand for it.

Issues i have with changing the Mini is that they already made the perfect look for it when they brought it back out. I know the Mini came out with tons of variations over the year but the look stayed the same and i think thats the way they need to go again at least. It seems they're trying to give it a more aggressive look when it's not neccessary or a positive thing to do. I cannot think of anyone that would want a 4x4 mini. Now a rally mini would be baddass!!!! (4x4 version not 2WD version)

If the Mini 4x4 sells enough to give BMW enough financial leeway to risk making a "John Cooper Works Mini Cooper Rally S" (imagine writing that on your insurance!), then let them make the stupid thing. :)

Well i'm waiting for the smart 4x4 that would really be something, BMW seem to have a knack for making ugly cars of late so this wouldn't suprise me

Mini and SUV? That's like an oxymoron. Next thing you know, BMW will come out with a X1 SUV.
Would be nice to have a rally MINI Cooper though 0X

I heard they canned the smart 4x4 because of finances.
I still can't seem to imagine a Mini 4x4 though... it is going to look hilarious. Like one of those bigfoot trucks you see in America, except much, much, smaller...
It's about as sensible as a bite-sized Whopper.

It's probably not gonna _that_ ridiculous. Basically a panda 4x4 with conservative german styling and a chic interior. Really not that bad of an idea. The Mini brand does need to move forward, if it's going to stay in vogue

I admit I never thought about it that way. Good point.
