I was reading car and driver the other day, they said that for the north american market the car will have an optional 6 speed manual. Now I heard that the SMG has some crazy first and second gears to help with the acceleration. Do you think one will be faster then another?

i def. think the SMG will be faster, i mean i dont care who you are, no one can shift gears in less than 80 milliseconds, plus, goodduck is right, the M5 was originally designed with the SMG in mind, so the reg. manual might not function as well

Errr :oops: great. Sorry I figured it was new.

7 gears vs. 6?
well for top end speed (past 155) the smg will win hands down, at least I would think so
and off the line with the LC button, it will beat the 6spd also :D

Manual m3s are just as fast as sMg M3s. Doesnt the SMG gearbox weigh more than a standard manual tranny?

This engine does not make much torque at low rpm. Does it? I figure they can make a tall first gear, like in say Ford gt or the C6 Z06. But it would be useless if the engine starts making power up top.

The engine doesn't make it's torque until around 5,000 i think.

the SMG tranny in the M3 does weigh more because of the hydraulic unit and the gear position sensor. Other than that they are the same gear box

as for the 6spd vs. 7, I belive it's going to be a shorter box physically because all they are going to do is delete 7th and adjust 6th to drop the revs a little more. I don't think they will just take out 7th because it was supposed to be the 3rd overdriven gear to drop revs another 500, so to raise 6th a little would make sense.

Remember though, this is a direct descendant of the P84 F1 engine. Even it's engine management system. It is designed to run at high RPM (why else would it have an 8250 redline :D :twisted: ) The more revs you pump out of an engine, the less torque you are going to make in comparison to HP. But i think the S85's numbers speak for themselves in terms of 0-60, 0-100 and top speed capabilities.

This is kind of an off topic question. Whats the formula that you use to calculate hp from torque and rpm? Just interested.

i think that formula is around here somewhere. I can't remember who posted it but it was one of the math whizzes :?

And this is good how? ;) :P

never said it was the best idea. the E55AMG gets it's power at much more accessible levels. However the engine doesnt' take very long to get there :wink: There is a reason it's power kicks in so high though. Where do you think the tach falls after you smack the paddle and grab the next gear from OSP?

bhp = (torque*RPM)/5252

Your choices are. AMG and go through no turns but have more torque than god, or M5 have not as much torque but you cna go through turns, but you have to be gentle to the engine until enough miles are on it.
