I've got a Katana 600 as my beginner bike and it hasn't failed me yet, been dropped 5 times and hasn't gotten an frame damage(thats why it's a great beginner). And the engine is indestuctable. But you can get 600 gsxr or something like that and probably be just fine but take the motorcycle lessons, it helps and it saves you on insurance.

I have an '01 Kawasaki ZX-6R. I was a begginer when I got it and I love it. best investment I have made yet. Best advice is to just take it easy, don't try anything stupid.
EDIT: and remember, whatever Jeremy Clarkson says about bikes.....
its probably not true.

I am an avid motorcycle rider who has been riding for many years. No matter what anyone tells you, get a used bike as your first bike. I myself would recommend a 250. The reason, this size bike is less likely to bite you in the ass if you mess up. Chop the throttle on a 250 and then a modern day 600 and you will understand what I mean. You can learn throttle control, lean angle and just overall bike control on this bike. When you can throw this bike around like a toy, then you can move on to bigger and better. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Well I was a biker for a part of my young like, rode stuff from 50cc up to 125 and finally 1340 LOL :D
Now 4 wheels only :bah:
First 2 wheels I've got (50 cc, then tuned)
http://img171.exs.cx/img171/6387/piaggiogrillo3cr.th.jpg (http://img171.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img171&image=piaggiogrillo3cr.jpg)
Second (50cc then tuned)

my 125, only used to pass the 125cc license, mandatory to pass after 2 years the "more than 125cc" one: it is as old as me, built in 1979, only 7500 km or something like that BTW

And my last 2 wheels: dad's Harley. it was mine for the last month of its life with us, then he sold it since he became an electric cars freak and I have no garage were to keep it (not to talk about insurance for a 1400cc bike on a pretty young biker)

That's it :D

Bultaco Metralla 250GT (1975) in progress of restauration... 2 strokes !! :D :D :D
Now learning with a Tuc250 (2000) .... 4 strokes :( :(
total time on bike: 7 hours !!! LOL !!
i dont think a beginner can die if he is not an asshole... you can go safe not doing stupid things... like think youre fucking Rossi and your city is a circuit !!
I can tell you i only got 7 hours of experience and i would take a 600cc... just to see it a little ( and im sure i wouldnt accelerate a lot )...heheheh i wouldnt want learn with that !!

I sometimes wish I would have a permit....
Like just a few days ago( last saturday ), the chief editor goes: "Hey, do you
have a motorcycle liscence, because I could give a bige or two to test out"
I can drive a bike and I plan to get a liscense so the next time somebody asks me
a question like that I'll just take the keys...
My dad and his friends were one of te first people in the ex Yugoslavia to own
the big and fast Japaneese motorcycles. He had quite a few of them in his time, but sold them shortly after I was born. The one I remember was a 1100 Honda and a Yamaha. I think I have a picture somewhere...... Don't know the models, but they were nice to look at.

As far as the pothole question, no, you would not necessarily fall. What will more than likely happen is that your front rim will get bent. That bent rim could also lead to a flat tire. It just recently happened to a friend of mine.
Headshake or what many riders refer to as a Tankslapper in its most dangerous form is what happens when the bars swing back and forth violently. It can get real bad to the point of the bars being swung from your hands and the rider losing control of the bike.

Hey Minacious, I just finished my msf class a week ago and got my M-endorse license this past Saturday. I almost got a red/white 2001 F4i for $4500 back in Feb but backed out after thinking it through since I had no license or gear. Now that I've got the former, I've been looking for an '03 R6 and F4i again along with some gear.
Lately I've been playing around with progressive motorycle insurance quotes online and was wondering if wut i got is legit. i purposely left out liability/comprehensive and just left on bodily injury, property damage, etc, and uninsured motorist coverage, which was the absolute bare minimum. My 12 month quote was $305. If I checked liability it woulda been $800. Is it realistic of me to actually get that $305 quote or is it not possible? I'm under the assumption that you either need liability or comprehensive or both to be under a plan. BTW, this was for an 03 600rr which is whats making me scratch my head.

What makes me scratch my head is how anyone would consider a 600rr as being a good starter bike...

Agreed, i've seen too many people from being a bike salesmen not respect the bike since it's a 600, but it's a sports bike. I still recommend an SV650 to any newbie that wants some performance as a starter bike, if you get the chance to ride one you'de understand.

I have a cruiser. It's a 2003 Kawasaki Mean Streak 1500. I have a Cobra exhaust system, Hypercharger-Pro butterfly intake, and a Power Comander to get the air/fuel right at this altituide. It's putting down baout 85hp at thw rear wheel. It's a great cruiser and looks pretty good too IMO. I'll have to take some pick if you all want.
I'm into dirt bikes.. the one with 4 wheels
I got a banshee for 4 years now.. Had few accedent with it on the sand but nothing majer..
1- Flipped the bike coming down a hill and I was able to escape before it rolled over..
2-Crashed into a my friend bike because he did not have his brake lights and I did not he was slowing down.. LoL ( I laugh so hard at this one.. )
3-Was doing donuts and the bike through went into two wheel mode to I jumped from it before it fliped ..
Thoes are the one that are on top..
Two pix of the bike .. and the rapter belongs to my friend.

Absolutely, which is why I question the absolute minimum I chose for insurance came out to such a low figure. I would think progressive's online system would have a flag to raise prices on more track oriented bikes.

The reason i say it's not the best idea to have a 600 sport bike as a starter is because the limit of the bike is higher which shouldn't be tested with little experience. And the power is much greater than an SV and since the SV is a V-twin you learn how to work the clutch/thottle a lot better from a stand still since the bike has torque to it down low unlike the inline 600's. An insurance is only done with CC's which i don't mind since i only pay $400 a year.

I ride a bycicle, does that count? :D
I ride this 2004 Yamaha TZR 50. In spain the law is that you can ride a 50cc from 14 (although changing next year) 125 at 16 and then unlimited at 18 as long as you have 2 years experience.
My bike has been great fun and good to learn on.
But there is only a few days until my birthday when I hope to get a car!

In my opinion, if you feel that you are inexpirinced. Meaning you dont think you have riden enough to feel comfortable. Please!, buy a 250cc.
My friend broke his left arm and shattered parts of his bone in his leg all because :
#1. no experience, taking a turn down hill at 130kmh+ not choosing the correct line and sliding into an on coming car.
#2. the idiot never wore leathers!! big idiot!!!
I use to ride around the little bush bashing 125c's and the peewee 80's etc etc. but for christ's sake everytime i fell off it, it was onto either grass, or sandy surface. Imagine tarmac! ouch!
One other reason you might like to keep in mind. If you buy a brand new bike for learning on, what if you drop it here n there. Damage it etc etc. So from that point of view, buy a cheap bike to learn on, if it falls, you really dont give a damn! Dont be in denyal, you will drop it, at least once or twice i guarantee this!
Hope this helps champ! good luck in buying your first bike. Ride safe!
