Check out this Z4 M prototype that was shot during high speed testing at Nurburgring.
Note the front bumber and the four exhaust pipes...also note that it has different wheels mounted...no idea why though?
The Z4 M Roadster will be presented in January at the 2004 Detroid Motor Show. It will probably have a 350hp V8, or the current M3 inline six with 343hp...

LOL, different wheels is what ricer do. They probably have those different wheels because they can't decide which looks better. That car will be awesome. The Z4 looks badass and with that powerful engine it will move.

I agree, it looks real sweet!!

I think that the reason behind the difference in the front and rear wheels is because it's a test mule, and with test mules they don't care about the looks of the wheels just yet, and they say "okay we want these front wheel/tire dimensions and these rear wheel/tire dimensions" so they go see what's already mounted and balanced, and just stick it on the car and drive it. I personally can't really see any other reason why they'd do it, cause with these prototypes, all they care about is getting all the glitches and flaws ironed out, then they see what they can do with the tidbits of how it looks.

just my 2 cents 8)

what? 7HP difference? whats the torque difference then?
i think i'd choose the inline 6 then. i don't think i'd be climbing too many hills if i owned one.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw it, but that's what the site said...must be wrong though, the V8 must have more power...

doubt it'd have the inline 6...that current m3 inline six was used in the later NA M roadster/coupe and all the europe ones. i think it made 321 because teh exhaust was too short or something...VBH talks about it in the slk32 vs m roadster clip....IMO doesn't make too much sense if they just leave the same engine

I think it will be V8 from older M5.
And yes, not much difference with standart Z4. Only dual exhaust and front bumper.

This z4 looks sweet!!! There is one thing though, i was reading somewhere not too long ago and someone said that they are not making a m version of the z4, i don't know why?? but if they do i can't wait to see what engine it will have.
And i wonder will tiff buy one, because he has the older version m roadster, so maybe he might upgrade :D

No, you're not the only one, I hate the car too. But I think the Z8 is ugly too.

Yeah! I don't like the new loo very much. I'm waiting for the new 3 series and the new M3 to see. But I think I'll be desapointed.

BMW Z3 M Coupé Rulllezzz!!! I think it's my favourite BMW. And the M3 E46 CSL too.

even if the HP difference is only 7hp, the torque would be much much higher, because of the fact that it has more cylinders and a higher displacement...and the extra torque would serve you much more than just for climbing hills, it'll help with loe-end acceleration and high-gear low-rpm acceleration.

then there's also the noise accompanied by the V8

lol and what a great way to bring up an almost 4-moth-old post

No way they are going to put a V8 with 350 bhp, it's irrational to develop a new v8 engine for the z4 when they can use the magnificent inline six of the current M3, as far as sound is concerned i prefer the sound of the high rev inline six. The weight of the v8 is going to deteriorate the cars fine dynamices and weight distribution, so probably the inline 6 is the choise.

Yes. It would probably be the inline 6 from the M3. BMW isn't going to produce a new engine just for the Z4M. They are now working with the new engine for the new M3, a V8 with 400bhp. :P

theoretically, BMW has engineers to make the car remain an "ultimate driving machine" through turns, and stopping, and stability anyway they go. id have to say id rather have a v8, and build it up, its still possible to get an 8 banger to reve like thier I6 with serious tuning; eg high performance valve springs to reduce high rpm lift.
mabey the fact that im an american has something to do with it, but i doubt that.
ill drive whatever they dish out given the chance  yea old post!
by the way, i may be dumb, but i didnt see the M badge on the z4 @ NAIAS ?

The main reason BMW said they wouldn't be having an M version of the Z4 was because the Z4 sales figures are abysmal. It looks like future competition from the AMG version of the new SLK may force them to produce one.

The 343 straight 6 would be my choice , that engine screams so loud , and worked extremely good in the M3 series .

But i still think that Merc using 400hp units in their future SLK will beat the Z4 everyday .

Where did you hear about a 400 bhp unit on the new slk? They probably going to use a 360 bhp naturally aspirated v8.

wont b a patch on the HARTGE Z4, they put the M5 engine and gearbox in it, slammed on its arse, 19's nice kit, and beutifull exhaust!!!
Looked, sounded and drove amazingly.

if the normal z4 is kinda fast this will be very very fast!
i love it

the Z4 is good looking car - much better than the Z3 - I think Z4M will have a 6 cylinder like the M3 because the Z4 doesn't has enough space in the bonnet.

As much as I don't like the Z line of BMW cars, I'd have to say that this is the one to have. I'll bet that with this exhaust it's going to saound pretty bad ass. It'll be a great car for doing power slides!!

I think it will be V8 from older M5.
And yes, not much difference with standart Z4. Only dual exhaust and front bumper.

If they did use that, how would it be priced? The Z8 was a two seater with an M5 powertrain and it was a six figure car. Makes more sense to use the 4.4 325hp V8 and six speed from the 545. Makes even more sense to use the current M3's straight six. Either way it'll be something if they make it.
