Now I know I can find out lots of info from the internet, but my wife and I are planning a holiday and Mexico is top of the list right now...
Anyone been there?
Just wondered if you would recommend any area to go to? Maybe you know someone who knows someone else who has a holiday villa we could rent? It is ok if they dont speak English, I speak enough Spanish to hold a conversation.
Is the riviera maya better than cancun? We are looking for a quiet holiday not tons of kids everywhere, if you can understand what I mean?
What about sightseeing? Is there much to see in that area? Any special cultural places you would advise we visit, or any places to stay away from, be it due to gangs or crime or whatever?
Thanks!

well if u want a calm place i woudnt recomend cancun, it is crouded, of coarse it is very! pretty. i c cancun as the US in mexico, everyone speaks english, it is not trylly mexico. i am from Monterrey, i love it it is awsome there! but if u r like a tourists i bet there r better places, though monterrey is an awsome place to live!.
I havent personaly beenin many places in mexico, but i've heard acapulco or Ixtapa ate very nice!
and mexico city has some nice things on its surroundigs ibe been there though the city is the worse i would stay away from it.
but i highly recomend u going to a place where u know someone that can show u around without charging u alot! like a friend or something.
other people can help u more than i can sorry.
anyway u r gonna have lots of fun im glad u chose mexico u r going to love it

No, no no. Mexico is not the place to go. Cuba all the way baby.
This is where I stayed. http://www.conquestvacations.com/hotels/COCM.html#
There were NO KIDS, NO AMERICANS and it was on a separate island so no Cubans except for the staff. The food and drinks were first rate, private beaches and all amenities you could ever want. Did I mention it was cheap? 8)

at last I got here, I was reading your pm :D
I'm not exactly the kind of person who travels around. I knew cancun some years ago, and as Oscar says, everyone speaks english, and you pay in dollars, so it's expensive.
If you want to visit mayan ruins, etc, La Ribera Maya is the best place because not much kids are in those places.
Mayan cities are excellent places to go without any children, because you need to walk in those humid jungles.
You should visit tulum, Xcaret, Palenque, etc, if you want to visit archeological places
That's about all I know of Cancun/ ribera maya,
If you want more colonial cities, visit Guanajuato which is ver far from cancun.
unfortunately I live in the capital city, which is very far from cancun; also guanajuato is within 4 hours of trip
I wonder if Jorge and/bmagni have more info on those places.
but you can't be wrong going to cancun or the ribera maya, you'll feel like home
EDIT:
great idea of mihai. Cuba is very cheap. Unfortunately you'll travel with your wife. I don't know a single person that has traveled to Cuba and hasn't come back thin because of the sex sessions with some gorgeous cuban girls  and they come back without clothes, they give them away for more sex (too bad that happens a lot, poor cuba)
If you're looking for a grand hotel, you wont find it in Cuba. The best hotel around is a 4-5 stars, and not that nice looking

...which is why I gave him the link to the resort where I went to, where there are no Cuban girls to take yout eyes off of your wife/girlfriend. It's very nice, the rooms are definitely first class and it's ridiculously cheap.

first I think when he say kids I might think he is talking about people my age and younger. I could be wrong
2nd If he has an american card, then he can't get in (well not if he comes to canada first then he goes to cuba)
3rd going back to 2, he can't fly out of the states
4th cuba has no american products, coke, heinz this are things that you NEED :D
5th when you to another country I think it is a must to go out with locals, last time I went to cuba (I was 18) I paid for 6 nights, and only slept there twice.
and mexico is amazing I am really into the whole maya aztec thing, I think my next trip might be there, or alaska or africa

Antonio, Bad, T, thanks for your comments guys.
While I have a UK passport, yeah there are issues with coming back into the US if you have a Cuban stamp in your passport: A foreigner, working for the defense industry, living in the post-9/11 US, visiting Cuba? I think they might have a few questions to ask of me and I don't need that shit! I would get all 'what business of yours is it' with US Customs and they could refuse entry if they don't like my attitude. It sucks being a temporary resident in many respects :|
I don't want to go somewhere where there are American chain restaurants on every corner and where everyone speaks English, I'm going on holiday to get away from all that (not that there is anything wrong with American stuff but I would just go to Florida or California to eat at Chilis). I want to eat local food and have to use my Spanish for a week to be honest.
As for kids, I didn't mean anyone your age T, don't have a problem with that as my wife is 23! I meant trashy families who don't control their under 16's and let them run riot!
We're not into nightclubs really, but don't want to be in the middle of nowhere either...
I have a vision of a beachfront villa with a patio, BBQ, and rental Jeep Wrangler (or whatever) outside! All inclusive would just encourage me to get drunk all day and eat too much! At 205lbs and 36" waist I don't need any encouragement
