more than likely saloon, i dont think to many estates were imported over here. First upgrade should be new clutch. S4 clutchs suck ass.

Haha...you guys crack me up. I refuse to post pics of it in the condition it is in right now. The prior owner was only an "average" owner. The car was introduced to the term "pride of ownership" today and Mr. Clay-Bar and Mr. Wax said hello to the paint. Once it's vacuumed out, I'll take some pics and put them up.

It's a sedan. I wanted the Avant for the space and to carry my dog easier, but this car was one that I could not pass. Now, I have to get one of those dog hammocks that strap to the front and rear headrests so that Boba can sit in the back without messing up the seats. Dig this:

Although the car was $12,000 over my budget, and it's "only" a 2001...it only had 11,963 miles!! That's NOT a typo! It's barely past break-in miles!! :D It was owned by a professor at San Francisco State University and when he was driving me around, he was telling me how fast it was, but kept short shifting it at 5,000rpm...so I think it was probably babied all its life and rarely, if ever, saw redline. He said he once took it up to 110mph...hahah...the S4 saw 110mph on the way home after I bought it. I like to call it...exercise.

Forester is for sale, I can't say I'll miss it, although no more aiming for big puddles of water, pushing shopping carts out of the way with the bumper and not giving a crap about the car. :D

As for comparisons, it's certainly a fast car, but it doesn't invoke the same passion as the M5. When I'm in the M5 it's just different. I'm excited everytime I'm in the car...each time I downshift and hammer the throttle, my heart starts pumping faster...the music of the motor is something that is hard to quantify. The S4...well...it's fast, it's smooth, it's quiet and it's certainly a very good car. But it just does not stir my soul...if that makes sense. After I chip it, it will spank the M5 (APR's chip alone is supposed to put power over 300hp). Right now, they feel pretty close as far as speed from a roll-on. From a dead stop, I think the S4 is faster, but not by much. My M5 has Dinan stuff on there though, so it's not stock either...but they're close right now. The suspension on the M5 is a lot better (Dinan Stage III). They're both fun to drive, but if I had to give one up...I'd keep the M5 without a doubt...even after the S4 is chipped...I would keep the M5. But as it is...I HAVE BOTH!! :lol:

Sameerrao: The E34 M5 was available in 3.8L in 1993 in the US. They're out there, but they're hard to find and even harder to find in low miles and with prior proper car. If you look hard enough, you can find one. Or, you can look for someone that imported one and federalized it. There are some federalized models in the US that are 1994 models (1994 model was not sold in the US).

Great ride with great miles, i only recommend getting the exhaust before the chip or you won't feel much of a difference with any modd you put under the hood. I heard through the grapevine that the turbos on the S4 (KO4's?) are fairly delicate and you need to do a cool down after every drive. Inform me if you can.

gobs3z: You have a good point about opening the exhaust first, but I really want to keep everything stock as possible. This is my daily driver and I'm 31 years old. I don't want a loud car unless it's on the track. I know that exhaust is the key restrictor in turbo cars, but maybe Brembo or something can chime in with Audi-specific experience: do you think chipping without anything else would be wasteful? Obviously, I probably won't get the full gains possible, but I think it should still be worth it? APR's first stage doesn't even include exhaust:

I'm not really planning on spending much on the car. It needs to remain smooth, quiet and reliable. I figure a chip and maybe wheels, if they will look okay without lowering. Otherwise, just a chip. For a daily driver, everything is perfect...well, the suspension could be tighter, but it's a good compromise for ride...

I haven't heard that the S4's turbos are "delicate", but I have heard that some cars needed new turbos by the 80k range. I assume fairly "rigorous" use though. I'm fairly light footed, except with passing and merging onto a freeway and I cool down the turbos if I've been on the throttle hard right before my destination...otherwise, I try to "granny-drive" before I get to where my destination is. I am looking for a decent turbo timer though...I want to make sure it will be able to work without keeping me from arming the alarm though...I have to start research the S4 boards....any recommendations for where I should go to get more information? S-Cars.org?

Thanks everyone...and thanks for the compliments...I purposely did not shoot pictures of the rear bumper. Prior owner was from San Francisco where "bumpers are for bumping". If I re-spray it, I'll get a before and after shot...otherwise, you'll never see the bumper in any picture!! :wink:

Where's everso when you need him, haha. I'm really happy to see that you obviously care about your car and are doing research, and going with the quiet ride with perfomance is a great idea. I have an APR exhaust on my car and it's very quiet, the only time you hear it is when you are at high rpms and let off the throttle to let the engine deccelerate the car, and even then it's quiet. It has 3 baffles in the muffler. But then i just saw how much the turbo back cost from APR which is about $2500. But they have a cat-back which they call stealth that goes for $949 and the description is The Stealth exhaust helps to maintain the S4's subdued character. While louder than stock, it is not too loud to attract attention. But after reading APR's chip diagnostic it looks like they get 318hp/382lb-ft without an exhaust. If you can get that without an exhaust i'de say go for it. Good luck, hope i helped ya.

Hey, any of you S4 owners have a turbo timer in the car? I've been looking, but I can't find anyone that makes a harness for it...HKS, GReddy, Apexi'...call me lazy. I don't want to splice, cut and solder in a hard line to a turbo timer unless I absolutely have to...any help is appreciated...thanks.

when they go into dealer shops to get tuneups sometimes the personnel ask if the owner wants any modifications that is good for the car. usually the people that dont know what the hell they are talking about say yes. (i know because my parents have done it) :roll:
