well, i just got home in my accord after trying to keep up with my dad driving the Z06 in pouring rain after he bought it for me in pittsburgh 8)

it's a 2001, torch red with red/black 2-tone interior
no body molding on the doors
6,095 miles on the clock
was garage kept, flawless exterior with a very minor scrape on one wheel
looks like it was never sat in, still smells new
was washed and waxed to perfection prior to our arrival at the dealership

ill save you guys some time by saying im one lucky bastard.

its pitch black outside and pouring, so no pics until tomorrow morning

my neighbor has a red/red z06 also... ('02 though) his wife just turned onto our street, passed my car, slammed on her brakes and went in reverse to see my temporary tags to make sure it wasnt her husband's car and then parked at her own home to tell him, thought that was pretty funny.

Sorry, I am picky, but in the rules (http://www.motorworld.net/forum/showthread.php?p=124881#124881) you can read:

first impressions

amazing brakes, noisy when ABS is operating unlike my dad's 996, but i think the brakes are more powerful

i can't seem to make the tires produce any noise no matter how fast i go through a corner, no understeer whatsoever

just ridiculous acceleration, ive broken the tires loose like 5 times now, with active handling on, it still lets you get very wild, it doesnt interfere much at all

very comfortable seats, very good gas mileage considering the performance

the turning circle is probably larger than most cars which can be annoying sometimes

im sure the Bose sound system is great, but to be honest i haven't listened to it once because

THAT V8 SOUND IS TO DIE FOR

the traction off the line isn't so great if you just floor it, even though the tires i have are 295s in the back and they are not runflats (pure performance)

you really have to feather in the gas pedal for a fast start

i believe i was in 2nd gear when i entered an onramp and floored it (giving my friend alex in MD a ride) i nailed the gas coming right out of a corner before the merge lane which was about 1/8th mile away
active handling was on and the rear started to drift left so i immediately let off the gas and yanked the wheel left, the rear tires gained traction and i jerked the wheel slightly back to center and off we went, man that was exhilarating
this was at 10 in the morning today, a sunday so there were no cars around

needless to say i cant stop driving this mammoth.

Excellent. Always good to hear a report on how a car drives. My TA had 50 less HP and a few more lbs, but none of this electronic traction stuff. Enjoy getting that back end out, I did for sure! Be careful when it rains, dude :wink:

I love my saab but I really miss RWD. I will never buy another FWD car. FWD is useless with over 200hp and don't even get me started on torque steer, dangerous at WOT until you hit 3rd gear @ 75mph :shock:

my first time driving it was in the rain, i drove very slowly, but still it seemed the car wanted to dart in a certain direction when it hit even a very small puddle, not the best tires in the rain hahah

ill never buy a FWD car again also. very true what you said. my dad was driving pretty fast in our '01 accord to the dealer (trying to make it there in time before it closed) and he was going a little too fast because he was so used to his 911 LOL (albeit AWD)

i was cleaning my titanium exhaust tips last night w/ rubbing alcohol and paper towels, to get all that exhaust grunge and soot off, the Z06 couple was walking their dog,

haven't really talked to them for a long time, he's looking at getting a white 993 carrera 4S
he posed the idea of us going to a local weekly car gathering in our trio of red sportscars, haha, that's mainly composed of tuned 4 cylinder imports, we both agreed it would be pretty awesome to all show up at the same time with 2 domestic power v8s and a german flat-6 8)

he says its packed during the summer, it sounds like it would be fun

would definitely take my digital camera

cool thing is the meets are at like 11pm to 1am on the weekends which would be cool because i get off work at 10pm

i cant get over how brilliant the car sounds, if you accelerate really slowly you can hear the hum gently climb in volume and anger, then at idle if you rev it and take your foot completely off the gas you can hear it gurgle haha, it sounds so badass.

i almost forgot to mention

i just installed the wheel locks on it today,
for some reason the owner had a brand new set of wheel locks in the trunk (unopened)
its obvious that he really took care of his car so im guessing he had it garaged at home and drove it to work where he knew it would be very safe

there are separate silver plastic covers that thread onto the lugnuts which i thought was pretty cool, they are matched exactly in color to the wheel, and you wouldn't be able to tell that i had wheel locks on unless you removed them

Glad you are enjoying the car, it's a blast from idle to redline - but don't let the electronic assistance let you pushit too close to the edge - because as you say the algorithyms are not very intrusive and let you get away with a lot - but they can't overcome the laws of physics.. ;)

Either way - enjoy the "best bang for the buck" out there. (especially at current used prices for 2001's.)

Not yet - with regard to this car and being on the street (not drag racing - but driving involving turns), you will need mods to the driver long before you need mods to the car... :twisted:

But I do have an open Borla XR pipe to make a "little" more noise ;) - and 2004 shocks to smooth out the bumps and help with stability and minimize "hunting" @ 120+ speeds on 2 lane B-roads out in the backwoods. :twisted:

You also want to ditch the stock shifter for a B&M Ripper Short throw (or similar), disconnect/bypass the CAGS skip-shift "feature", cut down the R/C Car looking tall antenna and generally have a blast :)

And even with only 385hp on tap, apart from freeway rollons, that are more about bank balance challenge than driver prowess, I have yet to have a car (any car) give me trouble in the twisties... :) (OK, the STi did stick aweful close to me but lost out as soon as there was more than 50 yards between corners.. ;))

i was driving yesterday and tried to shift from 1st to 2nd after a red light turned green and i basically got denied, the guy behind me flashed me, it was sooo annoying

this car is so ridiculous, i have yet to take a turn/corner too fast, i cant even get the tires to make noise when i do just that haha, its so planted, i love the feel of the steering, its variable assist i believe, its very firm at highway pace but much lighter when going slow to aid in parking

how much is that shifter and how hard is it to install?

have you noticed how annoying it is to engage reverse? ive learned the hard way, even when i slam it into reverse sometimes it doesnt engage, so when i let out the clutch the transmission just starts to shake and this horrible mechanical noise comes out of the back of the car, like the transmission is stuck in the middle of 2 gears, it sucks
ive finally learned to make sure i felt that jagged notch to know im actually in reverse before i let out the clutch

what else did GM change between the 01 an 02+ besides the 20hp? ive heard suspension and something else... how much better is the 02's suspension?

The changes between the 01 and 02 are not even worth .1 of a second.. :) Don't let the '02 - '04 guys get to you :P

As with all stick shifts, it is sometimes easier to get into reverse if you first elect 4th - then select reverse. Same with 1st after you come to a stop - you selecte second, then snick it into 1st. Easy as pie.

Shidter is about $150.00 if I remember - and easy to install.

BTW, you will rarely find a need to turn TC off completely on the street. Comp Mode is the best of all worlds. No traction control at all, yet full Active Handling available to save the day when needed. :)

If you ever feel the need to test the 3 modes... find a huge empty parking lot or an empty 4 lane freeway and try some 4500rpm launches. :twisted:

First with everything on - and notice how the TC ends the party early by cutting fuel and shutting you down before the tyres even chirp.

Then with everything off - and if you don't pay real close attention you will most likely begin an almighty roling burnout and then if you feather the throttle begin to roll forward and then the car will break loose and violently come around from the left side and either throw you into a ditch, the wall at the drag strip or the next county - which ever is closer...

Then try in Comp Mode - and now you will be able to either do a John Force rolling burnout as you counter steer you way across the parking lot pedaling the throttle and clutch as you reduce your rear tyre mileage from 15,000 miles to about 2,000 miles ---- or if you feather the throttle you will find your self paddling your way through the gearbox to a 4.xs 60 and 12.x something 1/4 mile.

And it will go something like this....

What I really like about those pics is the feeling of the speed. If you want that in a picture the background has to be a bit blurry or swept out. Which means the shutter has to be open long enough. I've tried to do this from a driving car once, but I failed: the car was blurry too. Maybe I just overdid it too much by using a shutter speed that was far to slow.

michigan has not had any law require emmissions testing of automobiles since 95, and even then, was only required in only a handful of counties :-D

big three dominance is quite blissful if one is able to enjoy it... michigan isnt the only state, i think, but im too lazy to search for each individual state :P
this is why im concidering getting straight pipes on my jeep, just rip off the ol' cat, and listen to a low reving I6... even more raspy... it would just cost me about 150 quid

Wow that's interesting that they don't test but it's still a national law to have cat's on your vehicle and if they catch you without them it could cost you upto $50,000 USD in fines, It seems everything with the Government on vehicles and the environment has a $50,000 fine. You still will need some type of O2 faker. I know a few people here that have easy off cats for the purpose of emissions. I'm certified by the Illinois EPA so they basically tell you all the tricks to pass the test and the fact that if you show them your training card they go a little easy on you, same with my FOP stickers on my cars (I love corruption) the easiest way to always pass emissions is to go to your local airfield and buy the highest grade fuel they have preferably a methanol blend that will burn soo clean you will always pass. I took my car in for the test and failed horribly then went and put in a FULL tank of 110 gasoline/methanol blend from a local airport let it run through the system then took the car back and passed with flying colors. 8)

Yeah, modding corvette's sure ain't cheap. I have Corsa Indy's on mine with stainless works headers. The headers make a big difference in the sound too. that should be your next mod. It's a great compliment for that new exhaust...even if you have to save up for a while...it's well worth it. 8)

hardwired iPod installation

this was pretty easy except for the lack of space to work with down in the passenger footwell

i bought the PAC AUX-BOX and the ABGM10 connector

down in the passenger footwell there are 2 separate unconnected connectors - both of these connectors were cut off along with the connector on the ABGM10 cable

3 wires from the ABGM10 were soldered to the first set of wires and the other 3 wires from the ABGM10 were soldered to the second set of wires

the only thing i dislike is you cannot go to previous tracks using the factory stereo buttons because every time a new track has started playing the track count on the dash resets to 1

thanks man :) it is so nice being a mechanic and having the tools and know-how to do this stuff by myself and saving all that money that i would be spending on labor.

haha, yeah, my old rotors were so warped and the car was so annoying to drive (believe it or not!) that I actually needed these new brakes. the whole car actually shook when i was slowing down with the old rotors, lol

i can't say for sure as I haven't stomped on the brakes yet, and i'm still doing the break-in procedure. one thing is for sure, the stainless steel lines are awesome. the pedal is very firm now, has a great feel to it. it is a fairly inexpensive mod too, at $100.

i'm going to guess that these rotors probably have better fade resistance due to the fact that the front rotors are 2-piece with an aluminum hat (better heat disippation)

being cross-drilled, these rotors are not recommended for the track or autocrossing. so i wouldn't recommend these for "extreme conditions"
i'd use the stock rotors for track/autocross as they are solid. for the track i'd recommend a big brake kit (intended for track use obviously), aftermarket wise i'd probably recommend some cryogenic (frozen) rotors that are slotted. they are frozen to -300 degrees F and apparently have tremendous resistance to fade. a company called Frozen Rotors makes them

i'll be honest and say that since i needed new rotors i figured i might as well get some that look good, which is the main reason i got these.

it helped my decision when i realized the rotors were lighter than stock too.

I like it, they are real beats anywhere you take em, track, auto-x, street, whatever.
I'm confused on the brakes though, why would the drilled and slotted rotors not be recommended for track/autocross use? But a big thumbs up for the stainless lines, did that to my car and it really does help with pedal feel.

Under severe track use cross-drilled rotors will crack around each hole. Solid discs are good and slotted discs are even better as it helps remove brake dust and whatnot.
