These are the first pictures i've ever took of my car, it's a 2003 Jazz Blue 20th Anniversary Edition GTi #176 of 4000. I've owned it for about a year. If you have any questions go ahead and ask. The Silver Jetta/Bora is my friends car, we did a little photo shoot cause we were bored.

Damn. I wanted to be first to tell you about the custom shot!

Nice car. I like those Golf GTis.
A lad up the road had a greeny metallic (pistachio) coloured one. It was quite modified, from what I could tell by looking at it.
Any mods? Any planned? Check the link in my sig, BSR make plug-in tuning software for your VAG 1.8T motor. Probably give you 20% more power and torque for around 500 bucks...

I've got the APR 93octane chip, diverter valve, n75 valve(adds 3lbs. of boost), cold air, and 2.5 turbo back with is now a straight dump out of the downpipe and HID's in projector housings. I'm afraid to use a vag com because i'de probably screw the air/fuel ratio and blow my engine.

I've got the APR 93octane chip
Is that the one that you can "switch" off?
Cool car dude, you got the best color for it too.
One suggestion:
Borbet Type T's. They are a tad played out in the VW world, but they look hot damnit!

Yeah it's the one you can switch off, but only got the 93 octane one so i can't switch to stock mode cause that was another $200. But i really want to get a set of these, they almost look like the stock wheels but are an inch wider. Thanks for the compliments!

beautiful car mate, I really like it.....here they are about the same price as a WRX of the same year - which is what I want to get :D
Which transmission do you have in yours? Any idea how much power it is making with the mods you have done? :)

03-28-2005, 03:31 AM
Thanks guys, it has a 6 speed manual mated to the front wheels, i'm estimating the power to be about 225hp and 260lbs/ft. of torque. It's spikes at 18-19psi.

03-28-2005, 04:09 AM
Cool, I think we only have an option of the 5-speed here but no 6-speed :? Whats the car like to drive, any probs with turbo lag?
gobs3z
03-28-2005, 04:16 AM
Turbo lag is an issue in my opinion. You've got to feather the clutch at 2700rpm's or it'll bog, but once it gets going it seems like the torque never ends and i love it for that. I run with Evo's from a roll, and thats about it. haha It's amazing on the highway, it's an inexpensive autobahn car. It also turns good enough to still keep me entertained after owning it for a year.

Nice car man where did you take those pics it seems vaguely familiar.
BTW have you heard of DUBWerks in Libertyville? they specialize in VW/Audi's. My buddy is have them do some work on his 2.0(dubbed the 2.slow) he plans on turbo charging very soon.

nice GTi i remember they shifted amazingly well wehn i tried one out. is the Jetta your too?

We took the pics at Caldwell Woods, off of Devon and Milwaukee. Yeah i've heard of dubwerks but havn't taken the trip out there. I've been trying to stick to APR products which they don't sell :( so i gotta go to GRD in Naperville. And the Jetta is my friends, he helped me put the dump on. Does anyone know what i can put between the metal mount and the exhaust dump so they won't rattle against each other? It has to be soft and non flammable. Thanks for any help.

Nice one. :D

Yeah it's my daily driver too, but i have an issue where i have to be as fast as possible in the summer so thats the reason for the dump. My gas mileage has gone to sh** though. I ran against a Saleen S281 last night and beat it 3 out of 3 times on the highway, i have a feeling it was an auto though. :(

do you plan on doing auto cross alot in the summer?? or are you trying to win some contest??
I've never autocrossed but i would deffinately like to try it out this summer. The guy with the Jetta in the pic is going to take me to one. I dunno how well my car will do with stock suspension. Have you autocrossed it and if so do you have aftermarket suspension on your car. I want to get a set of Bilstein PSS-9 Coil-Overs if money is available. I would actually be more into autocross than drag racing, and it would be awesome if i could get to a road course around my area. Does anyone know what a good road course track is around chicago?

Road America is just a couple hours north of you. I know Everso has gone thier with the Audi Club. If the Chicago Audi club is anything like the one here, you'd be welcomed to go along. It isn't free of course. Check Everso's thread about taking time away from JW. He left an email to get in touch with him.
If you don't mind the drive:
Mid America in Ohio
Brainerd International Raceay here in Minnesota. That would be a trek and a half for you though.
Autocross would be your best bet, but IMO, it's a bit of a ripoff. It is better than nothing though.

i havent autocrossed to be honest, but lots of people have on with our cars. the tex would be the best place to ask about that. coil overs will work wonders.
so whats the real reason for, "but i have an issue where i have to be as fast as possible in the summer" ??
everso, would be the guy to talk about since he is from chicago and takes his TT to the track often. but he has taken a leave of absence from JW to take care of bussiness.
tracks in chicago,
http://www.google.com/local?num=20&hl=en&lr=&newwindow=1&q=race+tracks&near=Chicago,+IL&sa=X&oi=localr
Road America would be awesome to head up to, i'll try to get in touch with everso. And with the term i need to be as fast as possible in the summer is because out of all my friends that are into cars the slowest one runs low 13's. Thats my logical goal to run at the strip, and maybe i can do it this summer, and hopefully it will be on street tires and stock turbo. Everso and I also wanted to get a Chicago Jabbasworld Get Together. I'll see if i can set that up for him.

hmm... nice, love to see it in person....
u will never take down the white boat!
Nice I always like the Golf ever since my old man had one when I was a young'n. This GTi is FF right? If so I'd consider bracing first before the bilsteins, braces are a fraction of the cost, with camber kit, adjustable strut tops you can get the handling you desire.
I haven't seen to many Golf GTi's here, they are like most european vechicles, quite expensive here for what you get. Like Dingo22 said its about the same price as a WRX here.
I saw the R32 golf at the lot, but it cost more than twice what I paid for my car!!! Also the R32 golf is not "true" all time AWD for some reason? but damn quick none the less.

My buddy has taken his stock suspension 2.0 Golf and done pretty good at local Auto cross events. I plan on making my car better for it aswell since I have another vehicle to drive in the downtime now.

I guess you can say that it's not "true" AWD, it's very biased towards the rear wheels. They just came out with a computer program that can change the car into 100% rear wheel drive. So if you see a golf doing rwd burnouts don't get freaked out.
I've never driven a 2.0L before or a TDi, but i know a lot of them want my stock suspension. I personally think it's soft but a lot of people think it's a great compromise between sport and comfort, but i need more sport dammit.

I was under the impression it was usually FWD due to it's transaxle just like in the TT which it got it's AWD system from.
gobs3z
04-03-2005, 07:17 PM
The Haldex system is usually FWD, 95% actually, but i was i thinking more towards the racing aspect of it, my mistake, and it seems people have different answers towards what the f/r can change to. And it is the same as TT. To many people still argue whether the Torsen or Haldex system is better, i havn't a clue though.
T-Bird
04-03-2005, 07:29 PM
Well my teacher said he really can't tell the difference between his A6 with the Torsen and the TT with the Haldex. One kid I know who is an Audi tech in Schaumburg said he likes the haldex because it is easier to manuever at low speeds e.g. parking.
gobs3z
04-03-2005, 07:54 PM
I got this off of vortex which explain the difference pretty well. The Haldex seems to be the better of the two since the power transfer is very smooth from the front wheels to the rear.
Torsen vs. Haldex is a never ending debate....
Here's my view: (from my post somwhere here http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=826959 )
The Haldex vs Torsen debate is, as you might have seen, not new on the vortex - and the arguments are in my opinion usually more emotional than factual. This thread is pretty informative.
The TORSEN system is a permanent allwheel drive system, with the power distributed equally 50% front and 50% back in normal conditions. When wheel slip occurs, power is transferred (up to 75%) to the axle/wheel with the most grip.
The HALDEX equipped car is basically a front wheel drive, having 95% of the power to the front wheels, until slip occurs. The HALDEX reacts in a blink of an eye, and transfers power to the rear.
(The "blink of an eye" reaction of Haldex, is 15 degrees in wheel rotation (fronts slip 15 degrees, and the rears are activated; <math-mode>An Audi TTq has 225/45-17 tires with a circumference of 1993mm. 15 degrees equals -> (1993/360)*15 = 83.04mm -> 3.27 inches of wheel spin</math-mode> )
I believe most people (that would be me too) can't tell the difference between the two systems. A constant 50/50 distribution should in theory make the handling more predictable, but the 25/75 transfer makes the torsen cars "sometimes understeer, sometimes oversteer". In real life this is very easy to learn to live with.
A Haldex car should in theory be very unpredictable, but since the power transfer seems to be pretty seamless, the transition from under- to oversteer should be just as easy to live with. In this thread, the follwing comment is made on "drifing with a Haldex car": The radii of your drifts may be a bit larger, but the drifts are actuall easier to modulate than the Torsen cars, which take a little more practice due to its understeer-oversteer transition.
Volvo AWDs up until MY 2003, has used a viscous (hydraulic) coupling. They introduced HALDEX with their S60AWD, and from MY2003 they use it on all AWD cars. A Swedish car mag did a comparison test to find the "best winter car". The contestant: Volvo S60AWD, Audi A4 3.0 quattro, Jaguar X-type and the BMW 330xi. The overall winner was the Audi due to better quality, but in terms of driving feeling and handling the S60 was ranked first. It was praised for its predictability and "fun factor". The S60R and V70R have a more "aggressive" progamming of the Haldex to create more "sporty" handling characteristics.
The advantage for the car manufacturer is much easier to grasp. The Haldex is cheaper, lighter and it has has a lesser impact on the fuel economy.
Conclusion: different systems with more similarities than one might think.

I'm about to get the EIP engine mount, but i'm going to stick with the apr stage 3+ because i know that it's amazingly reliable and the set up is very clean. I HATE the fmic's that have the piping going over the engine, it looks like a$$ and it's a bad way to pipe anything. So i need to save up a lot to get the Evo vertical flow fmic. Stay away from cold air intakes by the way, it slows your spoolup with that extra piping, and the air goes up a few 100 degrees when it gets to the turbo anyways, thats what an intercooler is for. (sorry just had to vent because of some idiots on vortex :D ) But good luck, nice ride.
