LONDON (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. (F.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is preparing a 500 million pound ($934.6 million) capital injection for the unit's struggling Jaguar division, The Sunday Times newspaper reported, citing a senior Jaguar source.

Earlier this month, Ford said it expected Jaguar, which has struggled to keep pace with larger rivals in the premium car sector, to report flat sales and a loss this year.

Jaguar has said it plans to end assembly operations at a plant in Britain and cut 1,150 workers, or 15 percent, of the money-losing division's workforce.

Ford's Premier Automotive Group (PAG), which includes Volvo, Aston Martin, Land Rover as well as Jaguar, reported a 2004 pre-tax loss of $740 million, a decline from a pre-tax profit of $171 million in 2003.

The decline primarily reflected unfavorable currency exchange and lower volumes at Jaguar.

Ford has projected that PAG will have a 2005 pre-tax profit of $300 million to $600 million.

I think that Jaguar as a brand is worth the reinvestment from Ford, but cash alone will not solve the problems. The company needs to go back to building sports cars and new interpretations of classics like the C/D/E type. Hopefully this will repair the reputation that Jaguar has earned from selling off Fords and front wheel drive diesel powered 4 cylinder estate cars..

current quality standards of Dew Jags is extreamly higher then of models 10 years ago~of course, they were in a very bad place at that time.

Back to topic: I do think Jag needs to find it's feet again. Honestly, it should go the route of Maserati... all high-end cars, and possibly only one "volume" car... a roadster or coupe within the same price range as a Z4 or Boxster. They need to inject an air of prestige into the brand again... and selling a lot of fleet cars definitely isn't the answer.

^^^ I tend to agree, they have always done the XJ well and sports cars need to be reinvented within their brand because currently everything seems a bit dated. I hope their latest concepts don't venture far from their current form when they hit the road. The last thing they should do is put the face of the concepts on updating cars or bland sedans ie. X type.

Losing Jag would be losing a piece of history.... they've been around forever, it'd be a real shame to let them go. However, I agree with everyone when they say they need to be a tad more reliable. They also need a car which really identifies them: they have a bunch of cars that are easy to forget in light of the competition.
