My battery just died on me today. I was wondering what the alternatives to buying a new battery are. Could I perhaps jump start it by bringing it up to a bit of speed (pushing) and then drop it into drive?

Push starting will only work in a standard transmission because of the mechanical connection (clutch) between the tires and engine.

You may be able to jump off the battery, but if it's over 5 years old, it'll be a better bet just to get a new one. Check your alternator as well to make sure it is putting out power and recharging the battery.

Thanks man! Just one more question. If I buy a new battery, can I just drop it in the car and hook it up, or do I have to format it?

Batteries are plug and play  you'll just have to reset the clock and radio stations

Correct, and you may want to do some research to see what the outputs of the various types of battery on sale are and what is recommended for your vehicle. In the long run it may save you some money :-)

What do you mean? Ruined alternator? Also, I have an aftermaket stero. I wonder if it will ask me for a code when I plug in the new battery. :? If it will ask me for the code, I'll be fucked since I bought the car with the stereo and it doesn't have any papers.

It could just be that the alternator is not charging the battery efficiently anymore. If you take your car to the parts store, they should be able to check it once the new battery is in. With a volt meter, go across the battery terminals with engine running. It should read 13.6 volts or more. If not, you need to replace the alternator as well.

couldn't tell you if the stereo will hava code or not. most likely not.

I borrowed a charger from a friend and I got the car running today. Tomorrow, first thing in the morning, I will go to the store and buy a new battery. Thanks for your help guys! 8)
