I always had W98 and have NO idea how to install/uninstall Windows, my brother or buddy did  so I am a complete http://arman.xz.cz/smilees/newbie.gif
What should I do first, should I uninstall all programs first thru "install/uninstall program", what should I backup(some settings or so), how to format disc, how to install etc. etc. etc.
I have C and D discs only +E(CD) so all files(vids and so I have on D)
If there is any site with this kid of manual, please post the URL.
I got internet connection somehow thru ethernet adapter(all flats in the house are connected thru 1 line, when lots of people in the howse are on net you got slower speed) and the guy when he was setting it up just set up IP adress. ummm where I can find that IP adress to right it down so I can connect to the net later 8)

1. backup any files you have on your C: drive (or whatever drive you have windows on)
2. put in the XP CD and reboot your computer
3. make sure your BIOS is set to check CD-Rom for boot disks
4. follow the idiot-proof instructions given my MS on the Install disk
-a. basically it'll ask you to choose a partition on a drive to install windows. select whichever drive partition, even though it's already being used.
-b. it will then ask you to reformat that part, tell it to do a nice full format to NTFS.
-c. let it do the rest for a while. it will automatically figure out your internet connection and some of hte basic drivers. of course, you say your internet was setup in an odd way, so maybe ask your friend about that.
do a search on google for installing windows xp and i'm sure somehting will come up.
hope this was helpful at all, its not a terribly difficult process once you get going :)

Thanx racer_f50, more questions:
@1 - its 20GB on C: what should I backup from C?
@3 - how can I check that? in BIOS?
so it formates dics itself? I dont have to format it manually?
I found how to make clean install when its already empty, nothing uninstall-98-install-XP

That really depends on what you have on your C drive. anything you can't live without i guess. you'll have to reinstall all programs of course, so at least copy down any serial numbers or settings or bookmarks you have setup. basically i backup everything that i can't just reinstall.
@3 - how can I check that? in BIOS?Yep, just browse around the menus and you'll find the option. something like "1st Boot Device", set it to check CD-ROM

Yep, the XP CD has a format tool on it which will run after you select the drive to install windows on. make sure to use NTFS format, becuase it is quite a bit faster than FAT32 on XP.
If you would just like to follow that guide you found, make a boot-disk (floppy or CD-rom, doesn't matter, download a tool for making them at http://www.bootdisk.com/ ) and then manuall format. i think the dos command for that using a boot-disk is "format C:" and it does it.
good luck 8)

fat35 is a way to formatr your hard drive. The incompatiblilllity comes when you put a fat32 drive on a NTSF machine like directly. Over the network, that is a different sotry. So yes, your Win98 machine will b able to communicate with XP. It might take a while for you to configure the networking between those though.
