View Full Version : Your list of "COOL" cars... a la Top Gear's cool w

i.e. Cars that aren't necessarily the best in their class. But they seem to carry this air of "coolness" about them. An evergreen appeal, no matter the place, purpose, or age group. Which one's do you think fall under the "cool" list?

Personally?

Rolls Royce Phantom
Mini Cooper S
BMW M3 CSL
Ford Mustang GT
Lotus Esprit Turbo
Pagani Zonda Roadster
Ferrari Superamerica
BMW 8 series (including the Z8 )
Porsche 991 (996) GT3 RS
Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG

Discuss.

Of the cars you have listed, the two that I think would / should be on that list are the BMW M3 CSL and the Merc G55 AMG, I saw one on the road yesterday and it was just as nice as they play it up to be. The side exhaust sounded amazing once the driver got on it a little.

I know it's a bit older, but one of the coolest cars ever built is this :

1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing.

They should have a perminate place on that wall for older cars that will always be cool.

All ASton Martins and Maseratis. They aren't as known as Ferrari or Lambo, but they have a discrete touch to them.

Apart from that I gotta agree with the CSL.

The BMW 645Ci.....I just think that car is so cool, not sure exactly why but something about it gets my attention :D

I think the G55 is excluded from that rule. It's just so right. I don't agree with most of acs's list though (sorry mate, no offense meant). Most of the cars on it are "poser" cars, at least, IMO.

A bit of a pointless topic, but here's my $0.02

Sir_GT, your list is pretty good, apart from the Cooper S. You live in the UK like me, yet you still haven't got bored by the thousands we see everyday? :?

The M3 CSL and the G55 are on the list mate.

I was also thinking of adding the gullwing... it was between that and the G55... but I felt that the G55 was more "complete" in the cool department.

Lol. Bored? To an extent, yes, but there's this appeal about it. Something very British. It's quite a modern car, but it somehow never lost the magic of the old one. It still looks like no other car, it still is bloody fun to drive, and in one way or another, they're still affordable enough for most of us to enjoy and live with.

I mean... there's only one mini cooper... there isn't another car quite like it, is there? :)

Yes.... the original.

The re-hash from BMW is a great car, and worthy of the name too, yet it just seem too cliched and contrived when i see it now.

Also, affordability is neither cool or uncool

And the British thing is slightly exaggerated. I thought it was built by BMW :?

Anybody caught on JW using the term Mini Cooper S for the new mini without putting new before it will from now on be instantly disenbowled

It's built in Oxfordshire mate. I spoke to the mini rep I know, and he told me that the plan is to use british-built engines by next year as well. So all the Mini's will be built entirely in the UK from next year onwards. :)

It might be German money, but the blood, sweat, and tears involoved are still very much English. :)

I'm surprised you guys seem to dislike the new mini so much. By next year, that'll be our only decent, fully english-built car. Even Aston's aren't completely English, nor are Jags and Land Rovers.

don't hate it that much, but i do dislike people not distinguishing between the two, and not giving the original enough credit

German money, design, R&D etc... all the things that make the car. They created the blueprint, the builders in the UK are just doing as they are told.

If you call the New Mini [Sorry AL  ] a British car, then is the Nissan Micra made up in Newcastle another British car, with blood, sweat, and tears a British car too :|

^^^^

Anyway, back on topic

acs power's list seems a bit heavy on the 4x4s. The G55 is a good Q-car, but the X5 is just too school-mum-ish. The other cars are a bit brash, like the 430 and the Lambos... nice to have, but not as cool as, say, an Aston DB4 or an E-Type Jag 8)

i would say the G55 is definitly a "cool" car if anything and also the phantom. i got to see one in person a while back and it had the most insane road presence of any car in its class. as for older cars the delorean was an extremely cool car just b/c it was in back to the future. in reality its was pretty slow but in the movie it did flaming burnouts.....how much cooler can you get. i also agree with the mercedes 300SL gullwing, definitly a "cool" car. finally i would also put the 1958-1960 fuelie corvettes on the list. :D

Of course the 300SL is cool

But dare we forget the Muira. a007apl would have us shot!!! :P
It's as cool as it looks at the start of the Italian Job, and i would kill for one of these cars. I think TT might have a soft spot for Muira's too

You'll have my vote on the Miura as well. Personally, I think owning a Miura now (properly owning it... driving it and all) is cooler than it was when it first came out.

Personally, I still think the G55 is coolest Mercedes ever. I mean, the fact that it remained untouched for so long really goes a long way to show how much "soul" it had.

Matter of taste... The car makers I like most are BMW, Audi, Ferrari & Lamborghini and these are the cars made by them that I want most, plus 2 Mercedes models that really deserve to be in the list. That's what I like - some german and some italian cars. No american, no british, japanese... sorry 8)

I also think TVR´s fall into this category, they are far from being the best cars, but without a doubt they are cool, as the Lotus Esprit :|

pretty much every Lotus, TVR, and more of those "underdog" cars....i like small companies giving the finger :fist: to the big car companies that have lost touch with real driving spirit
