I stumbled across this site which posts crazy challenges for computer animators: The last one he did was create a 2 minute audio and visual graphics demo... in under 4 kbs. Yes, 4 kilobytes.
http://www.maa.org/editorial/mathgames/mathgames_08_16_04.html
He also has other challenges, like 48k or 64k. By far and away my favorite is probably called "Beyond." Just take a look.
Oh, and if you just want to download them all (about 20 or so I think), they bunched them all together in a zip file... a whole 800kbs large.
The link for that is: http://www.maa.org/editorial/mathgames/Demoscenes.zip
Ah - the Demo scene... that brings back memories... :)
The days when realtime processing was more achievable than video processing.. hehe
And remember, the original projects showed up when the most advanced processor was a 16Mhz 286 with 1MB of RAM and a 40MB hard drive... :)
In the meantime the demos got a little better, and the code even more efficient.

I had a lot of Demos for my Amiga. Some of the things I saw were unbelievable. They couldn't have been that huge as they were all on floppy 3.5" disks...
Yeah - in the early days the biggest demos would be abotu 700k in size.
I think the newer ones are smaller because the CPU's and video cards have embedded instruction sets that can be subbed versus having to have them all coded in the executable.

That is just plain insane, really impressive. The Matrix animation reminded me of another Matrix animation that i saw. It is different because it is done in ascii but i think just as impressive. Here is the link - http://abstract.cs.washington.edu/~renacer/ascii-matrix.html.gz. Sorry if this is a repost or if many have already seen it.

OMG I wish I could see the code for that. That is FUKING TINY. I have just submitted a program wich was 11kb code. Damn Id like to see the code.
OMG that game looks like doom3 and the thing is less than 100kb! That is insane. How the fuk do they do this?

I forget which one of them it is, but one of the demos (the 4k ones) includes the source code, surprisingly in C. Heh, just download them all and take a look... doesn't exactly drain the bandwidth, even on a 56k.
