Yup. These things are nuts. I feel as if you could get sued for nearly anything in the US. Forget Social Security - Invest in lawyers.

Once again: only in the US ;)

You mean "only in an oddball county in the an oddball state like Colorado".... :P

Remember, the United States of America is comprised of 50 separate constitutionally independent bodies - under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government... and that within each of these states there are again smaller executive regions - counties.

Think of it as what the EU dreams of becoming one day. ;)

This case was ruled in a Colorado county small claims court.

The case could have been appealed up the chain - if they felt that their federally protected rights had been violated - or if the ruling was illegal.

What you have here is an example of how well the system works.... while the judge and the plaintiff are both off their rockers - the system still worked.

Brembo, what hes saying is whats awarded often depends on what state your in.. The nut jobs out on the left coast are far more sue happy then the people on the east. There are suits in the east, but you'll find that 95 percent of the rediculous ones happen in california, colorado, or washington. Each state has its own independent civil system with its own laws.. to go beyond that you have to appeal.

lol..

Some of you would be suprised in the differences in culture and even language depending on areas of the country.

It varies from the simplistic.. ex: the 5 different versions to describe a soda..
To the deep: the bible belt
To the just plane nutty: berkley california.
at the risk over over generalizing, these are just on average not everyone: The south has this self dependence to it outside of the city, sometimes to extreme. (to the point some people would label it backward or find what they do to strike you as odd. Ill admit some things they did certainly seemed strange to me when I moved there 5 years ago.)
The north tends to think there supreme to everyone with a focus on "culture". (While I identify most with there interests since I grew up there, I often feel this push for culture is just a form of elitism). the middle states tend to stick to themselves, and most people think that the far west are a tad off there rocker.

I have lived in the north and south for significant portions of my life and can verify directly that these tend to at least be the most outspoken attitudes in these locations. They are by no means a blanket coverage though.
A similar type difference can be seen city to country...
We really are a melting pot.

NorCal, Oregon and Washington..living together happily in the Granola bin...Filled with nothing but fruits, flakes and nuts

i think for that one you waould have to look at Arizona and California..Maybe Oregon too..but people from Washington aren't too bad. Sure we've got an over-zealous geek, and an aero-space company that seemingly hires machinists as temp workers, but we're semi-sane...

My thoughts exactly. i mean does this woman have such an air of self importance that she thinks someone dropped off poison cookies at her door to kill her. Someone needs to tell her " you are a poor(hence why she sued) pissed off bitter woman who needs to RELAX. I mean how could you get so streesed out by home made cookies....and last i checked, she didnt have a stroke, or heart attack but just thought you might. pathetic if you ask me, this woman should of made a better life for herself instead of waiting for a reason to strike it rich(which i am sure a grand is a ton for her in the boonies) and she tried to sue for more. pathetic, malicious and down right rude. sums up everything that people assume about americans, and this woman has proved the theory right in this case....I am not grouping 250 million americans into this category, far from it, so dont flame me guys...but seriously some ppl need to take a 1000000mg chill pill IMO.

There are some real nuts in seatle.. but on the whole its not as bad as california.

It's not soda, it's pop!!
I guess at least you dont call it coke.. blasted southerners, theres more then one soda company, and pepsi's so much better.

In some places they also say it all the way out.. soda pop....
thats just one example, I can think of many more.

*went to school in the shadow of cokes world headquarters building.. no pepsi products were sold on campus and we had the only pizza hut in the world(a pepsi owned company) that sold coke.

My dad worked for coke for 7 years. Surprise Surprise, my favorite kind of pop is Mountain Dew  can't drink it the way i used to though. Took me 2 years to break my addiction to it (maybe i should sue... )

And yes, Seattle has some wackos, but there are really only two places they hang out. Capitol Hill and Broadway near the college.

Are you knocking Subway and Quiznos? i would much rather get full on a deli sandwich than a greasy, cholestorol filled burger from mcdonalds.

now a philly cheese steak on the other hand....as good as they are..they can't be that great for you.

No - the point is this is a federation of constitutionally independent states... THAT is the beauty of the United States of America...

You did know that each state has it's own constitution.. right? That is free to define the rule of law for the state... just so long as these state-side rules do not violate the federal constitution.. :)

Again - the EU is onto a good idea... pity they will never be able to execute on it correctly. ;)

This is how these 50 independent thinking states are able to maintain their own unique identity - yet move as one when needed.

In short - one of the best methods of governments ever conceived.

Complete with 5 different ways to name a drink and 7 different names for a sandwich... ;) hehe

The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.

- Don't you think this is a little odd for a 17 and 18 year old to say? Cursing?? come on. You gotta be kidding me. THink of when you started swearing. I think there is something more to this story then we know. So I can't really say that this is right or wrong.

Over here we have a group called the homeowner's association. They seem to have more power than the local government. If they are pissed off enough they can actually force you to move. Over something like this, i would definetly get the petition going and have the moving truck waiting outside

side note: gray, you forgot to add Po'Boys to your list of sandwich names :D (i say this as i am scarfing one down  )
