Depends on the company that makes the router and the os..
Depending on the company it might work out of the box or you might need to setup dhcp(Im assuming your working with a windows box).
In other words.. Give us more information.. network connectivity is one of the hardest to trouble shoot from a distance.

I guess 2 things u can look at......(assuming u are getting ur "Cable" from rogers)
1) May sure ur WAN side is on Dynamic IP address
2) may wanna look abit in the MAC address issue. rogers give out their IP based on ur WAN MAC address, and if that address is in conflict with another rogers user or that ur MAC address is weird (to their system), u will not recieve an IP..thus making it not able to connect

does your cable modem require you log in thru your pc or is it permanantly connected to your isp?
if its the former then you will need to put your username and password in your router. if you don't have those settings in your router then get another one.
you have tested that internet works with just your modem right?

how do i find out about my MAC address
thanx
Login to ur router from ur computer, click on WAN (wide area network) and there should be something call MAC address.
Most router allow u to clone the MAC address of the login computer NIC, u may try that and see if u can grab an IP sucessfully.
