Now it is official, I dare you members here if you are ever on hollyday in Norway to break the traffic law, because Norway now, as of 1st. Feb.2005, have the highest fines in Europe, and probably the world.

35kph over the speed limit in a 100kph zone is €945,-
5kph over the speed limit in a 60kph zone is €75,- (five!!3mph!!!) :!:
Running a red light is €630,-
Ignoring "duty to yield right-of-way" €630,- (may even not be any other cars there)
Driving or overtaking in a Bus-lane €500,-
Dangerous overtaking €630,- (goes by the officer's judgement)
Tuned moped (50cc) €500,- (ex. tuned exhaust or new gearing)
Any of the above combined more or less €1.210,- (+jail)
If you ride a bicycle without lights €120

Haven't even mentioned the "point-system" which have been proved useless by SINTEF

I don't mind a resonable fines, and respect for the law but this is insane. Many of the cop's in Norway are now afraid to give people fines. Narcotics and violence crimes are usually settled with a fine of €200-250,- If you get caught with two user doses of heroin on the open street the fine is €200,-

It's three times as expensive if you are stressed and accidentally run a red light as walking around a ex. school with heroin on you..... :|

These are the new actions of reducing the accidents on Norway's crappy roads(from the gov. point of view): More undercover cop-cars, more speedcameras, more radar traps and new more efficient radarguns. Only in the small county Vestfold they had 237 radar traps in 2004. Skilled policeofficers who schould be out catching thives and drugsmuggeles sit along in a ditch hiding from soccermoms and taxidrivers.

I am seriously concidering moving to an other european country andfinishing my studies there. :x :x :x :x

The people who figure this shit out is "Quote George Carlin" People who oughta be killed!

GOD DAMN! Thats just freaking outrageous! But I guess they need it if they have bad drivers and it sounds they are EXTREMELY serious about this! Would you happen to know how long this is gonna go on for at this insane charges?

thats pretty stupidly expensive, so I'm glad I don't live there :(

I think finland has the best system, where it's based on a percentage of income, so an unemployed person may be fined say 50€ but a millionaire could get a 50000€ fine for the same offence (made up figures to give an example.. but you get the point)

That's just too much...

And like always, they focus too much on speed.. Speed is not the problem, bad drivers are.

you're fucking kidding me right? so if you have an afermarket spark plug in it, you get popped for 500 Euros? I don't even want to think about what that is in USD  i can just see the cops walking around college campuses with their little ticket books, inspecting all the mopeds  glad i'm not paying for it  I don't know much about mopeds, bet you are you supposed to tell if they have different gears? :? i'm sure different brands have different gears. GAHH..there are too many flaws i that logig for me too think about :?

Who are you, and what is this online diarrhoea that you're saying? In Aus, 35kph overlimit ticket is +-$200. Our fines are bad, and the deduction of points are even more so frustrating, but the financial penalties are no way near being close to how bad Norway has it. I feel for them :(
However, the frequency of, and the now questionable means in which we are dealt fines is a big enough debate for a whole new topic.
Skaala, drive like a grandmother from now on :P

Fines generally don't teach people much IMO, especially the scum who don't ever pay them, have a license, insurance etc etc , they'll just do it again. The points type system over here is the best we can come up with so far and its hugely flawed, hopefully they will review it soon as in how many points you get for certain offences. Still i can't come up with a better way really, who decides what is safe and what is not. :bah:

have your first-world class countries tested things like....yellow cars is soccer?
you're caught speeding, only 5 mph in a 30 zone, you have a yellow card. Next time you're caught speeding by 5 mph, you've a fine.

but if you speed by 15 or more, the fine is doubtless

I hope I made myself clear

I've always had a problem with fines of any kind. The government has taxes to get
money. A little while ago New York state was talking about taxing cigarets as a way
to deter people from smoking. IMO if they really cared about stopping people from
smoking they would make cigarets illeagle(not that I support making them illeagle),
but they just want to profit off of them. :? :x It's the same way with steep trafic fines, I
support a fair points system only.

i dont believe one bit that the gov. believes that taxation of cigs would deter smoking... its quite a proven habit. taxation of smoking is guarenteed state income, much like gas tax... if gas wasnt such a sure seller, do you think it would only have sales tax?

anyway, before hijacking this thread overtly...
i belive the euro vs dollar is $1.3064 per euro... $653 @500 euros... thats half a years insurance cost

IMo fines should always be based on the person's income, period. and of course possibly, not 50% of it for a red light.. but fixed amounts are just dumb.. rich ppl would not care if they will have to pay 1000 for a red light.. not as much as somebody making 2000 per month maybe...

I think the fine for doing 5kmh over is a bit harsh as this can occur accidently, but if your doing 35kmh over the limit then you know what your doing and have to suffer the consequences if caught. So if the fine is too much in your opinion - I have an easy solution, just don't go that much over the legal limit :D
I get sick of people complaining about fines, we all know the rules so if you think the fines are harsh then just don't break the law

I suggest not to move to Belgium, we have the same sort of stupid politicians over here. They also see raising the fines and placing more speed cameras will improve road safety. Such solutions will idd partly work, but that's not a good way of doing it and speed isn't the main cause of accidents.

We also have some high fines over here since a year or so. Some examples:
- driving 50 km/h in a 30 km/h zone or driving 40 km/u over the speed limit in other places: € 550 to € 2750
- driving 40 km/u in a 30 km/u zone or driving between 20 and 40 km/u over the speed limit in other places: € 175 (to € 2750 if you have to go to court and the judge doesn't like you)
- crossing a white line: € 175 (to € 2750 if you have to go to court and the judge doesn't like you)
- not slowing down when passing a bus that's releasing its passengers: € 175 to € 2750

etc.
