holy crap that video of it breaking the sound barrier is nuts! Wish there was a higher quality capture (with sound), still sweet though.

Thanks.

It's actually 4 F-18's, with 2 F-14's flying at the tips of the triangle.

Well fuck...I watched that vid again, and I definitely see the F-14s, and it would make sense to fly other Navy jets with them, so I guess you are right. Not very good for someone that does aircraft recognition...

yup. i got to sit in one at a a Pratt&Witney family day, but other than that, no expeirience. Pratt&Witney make te engines for the f14, f15, f22, x32, sr71, etc. and many civilian aircraft as well.

f-14s are still faster then the new f-18s and the f-14s were dsigned in the mid-late 70's

f-14s are still faster then the new f-18s and the f-14s were dsigned in the mid-late 70's

The F-4(first flight 1958) is actually faster also than the F-16 and F-18.The F-14 was actually designed in the late 60's and took flight in 1972. The reason they are faster than the newer F-16's(1976) and the F-18(1978) is because the F-14 is a defense interceptor for the fleet which means it needs to get into the sky and into the battle zone as quickly as possible, hence the swept wings and 1,584 mph top speed because it's protecting $10 billion in ships and 10,000 sailors. It has a radar that can 180 miles which is over 3 times as far as the F-18. The F-16's are slower since they are a single engine aircraft made more for manuverability and its light weight and it's much cheaper price tag than the F-14. The F-18 is an offensive strike aircraft which is very manuverable, and it has the top of the line avionics from constant updates and is the back bone of the navy right now and speed isn't always before fuel consumption and manuverbility. In a gun to gun dog fight the F-14 would lose easily to the
F-16 and F-18. Without external tanks and no refueling the radius is also greater in the the F-16 and F-18's. And the F-15(1972) is faster than all of them and the most advanced plane right now is the F-22 which only does 1,200mph but is the only plane that can go passed the sound barrier without afterburners, having the fastest plane was an era and it has sadly died. Sorry for the long story, i just thought it was interesting and i'm a plane fanatic.
Top Speeds - F-4 - 1,430mph(1958)
F-14 - 1,584mph(1972)
F-15 - 1,650mph(1972)
F-16 - 1,320mph(1976)
F-18 - 1,180mph(1978)
F-22 - 1,200mph(1990)

they do alot of bombing runs at airshows seriously your've never been to an airshow. Its almost to loud to hear a bombing 50 feet away.

http://jpspanzers.com/jp_gal/aircraft/pww_fa/images/F-14%20Tomcat%20Black%20Bunny.jpg

there are only two black F-14s in existence sadly icouldn't find a picture of one so this will have to do.

the actually top speed of an f-14 was never released. BTW the F-14 can out maneuver an F-18. It can also toggle on to more targets.

this truck uses three of the engines from the f-14 tomcat. if you were to turn your volume all the way up you would not be able the simulate the sound in real life

this is the air show i go to this truck maxes 376 mph in its run.

under plane view and on ground best resolution of all vids. (http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96781308/K=shockwave/v=2/SID=w/l=VDI/SIG=1269mq9t1/EXP=1107381013/*-http%3A//shockwavejets.com/images/ShockwaveTruck.mov)

the truck holds a 256 mph @ 6.36 sec 1/4 mile.

holy shit that bombing run is insane! why the fuck would they drop bombs during an airshow? does that normally happen. the vid is hilarious because soemhow the spectators are unaware that bombs have been dropped right next to them. the guy points in the last second of the clip its hilarious.

They never use live artillery at air shows, those explosions were pyrotechnics. They may drop dummy bombs to make it look more real, but thats as close as you'll get.

they use dummy bombs but rarely use pyrotechnics

They always use pyrotechnics because they don't want to destroy their own airfield by putting craters in it, and whenever you see a spec, according the U.S. Navy, it does list the top speed which is what i listed. But then again it is according to them, so they can lie to us if they want which they would do, haha. And yes ofcourse the F-14 can lock more up more targest, up to six at once, and this is because it uses the Phoenix missile which is independent after launch since it has it's own radar. The F-18 only can lock up to two at once and has to still fly towars the target till it hits, but it also wasn't built to protect a fleet. The F-18 is more manuverable and has a faster roll than the F-14. The F-14 is an awesome plane, they just have different purposes. But the B-52 will outlast them all, .

wow, you two must have attended air cadets. All i can say is how amazing that looks when it breaks sound. Is that the water vapour in the air expanding/steaming from the immense speed? If not, what is that cloud that appears?

Your first guess was right, good old water vapor. I saw video where an F-14 attempted to do the same thing, and right after it passed the ship it tore apart. Pilot bailed out and survived, but it was crazy to see it happen and how the crews went straight into action to rescued the pilot.
