I know my topic is pretty general, but I just read something interesting today I couldn't kinda believe.

Most articles/reviews I've read pits the M5 against the CLS 55, and even though the CLS might have a more direct steering and a better tuned suspension etc. than the E 55, what it doesn't have, surprisingly, is a lower Drag Coefficient.

According to Mercedes' own site data, the E has a 0.28 DC while the CLS has a 0.3.

So although the CLS might look more aerodynamically efficient, it's not.

I guess that explains the E55s better sprint times... also shows the CLS is slightly Form over function... why would they do that?????

is this a repost? but yeah, i saw that and was a little surprised myself.

sorry if it's a repost...not too sure...

drag coefficient doesn't tell everything tho. Frontal area and the amount of downforce (or just the amount of lift) all play into it too. A number of the low Cd cars produce quite a large amount of lift at speed...

and a Porsche Cayene can go to 60mph in 5 sec

found this on freshalloy.com. kinda off topic, but still pretty cool.

I was hopping this to be a direct cat fight on which is better.. E55 or the CLS 55 or the mightily M5  .. But it turned out to be a physics class.. so please show me the door..

On a serious note though.. I hears on some video I saw not sure which one that the more boxier the shape the more aerodynamic it is.. not sure if this is true or not and not sure if this is related to this topic or not..

I will stop here before I make a fool out of my self..

^- There are truths to that, but in general not really.

BTW, anyone know the weight of the 3 cars? If the E55 is heavier than the CLS55, that would be a prettty obvious reason for the better sprint times. And if that's not true, maybe weight distribution...

haha sorry for the physics class then, we'll start off the which is better one...

I live in Dubai, and here we have long straight highways and congested city roads, and I would definitely prefer the E55, it is easier to drive than the M5 and can seat 5 instead of the CLS' 4. It is also the cheapest of the bunch here (unless you custom order, and then you have a 6 month wait...)

I study at college and work at a bank at the same time. The rush-hour college to work drives are brutal and I'd defo enjoy the E.

The E55 weighs 1725 kg
The ClS55 weighs about 1820 kg
The M5 weighs about 1830 kg

hmmm...............

long straight highways, sounds boring ;)

BTW Where I live, M5 is cheaper than both E55 and CLS55

1725kg for E55 cant be correct. Are you sure?

Well Humaid I never got a ride in an M5 my self.. But with the new one.. I'm pretty sure it will trash any MB out there except for the SLR ofcourse.. and the 65's  .. The new one will have an SMG3 gearbox which dose help alot in traffic and I think their is an auto mode in it too ..

If we are speaking of price then I think the M5 will be cheaper than the E55 and the CLS55.. remember back when the old E55 and the M5 was out.. The E55 was in the range of 300,000 Dhs and the M5 was 280,000 Dhs now I know it cost heck alot more but my guess it would be cheaper but nothing confirmed .. By the way Dubai BMW has an brown M5 in their back store .. I saw some pix of it at the M5 messageboard.. But I personally did not go to have a look at it..

really...i better go check out their back store then, my family is pretty much a BMW family, and I have the E39 5 right now, but I just detest the new look.

I think the BMW guys decided the E39 looked way to good...I love that car.

Drag coeficient will not make a noticable difference under 100mph. Weight and power are far more important.

I think id have to the beast(e55) to work if im taking the streets, and my M5 if im taking the highway.

CLS 55 all the way for me. M5 is too brutal it is more of an EVO or STI. E55 is too common and there are 4 in my road 3 black and one silver. The CLS arrives in south africa in April and will be a sleek stylish stunner. It will only come out in 500 and 55 form here. So it will be very exclusive. Yeah! On the list for both models but short of cash for the 55. So maybe...

humaid

I personally wouldn't get the 500. In fact I probably wouldn't get any Merc 500 right now, they are soon to be replaced with the 550 and I like the new 3.5 v6 engine.

Here in Dubai I would either get a 350 (my dad's ordered a CLS 350...but the waiting list is months long) or a 55.

The great thing about Mercedes Benz is that buyers have options. Unlike beemer, there sports models are so limited. Choice between C55, E55, CLS55, S55 > all sedans what does beemer offer.? 1 sedan M5>

humaid

I believe BMW is going to offer the M7 as well soon. But you also have to look at it this way, BMW only has 3 sedans. The 3, the 5 and the 7. It offer's M on 2 (albeit in coupe form on the current 3, i believe in sedan form in the next 3) and soon on the 3rd (the M7).

The number of AMGs (esp the s55) being shipped (sold) from stuttgart has not gone unnoticed.

BMW is responding: M1, M3, M5, M6 and M7.

Wheeeeeee....more for us.................................

Unlike Mercedes BMW also has more reliable cars, a maintenece plan so that all services are covered by warranty, NO platform sharing with anyone..especially a shitty american company like Chrysler  so that our $130,000 vehicls aren't going to end up looking like a Crossfire :P
Maybe thats why BMW had the best Customer Satisfaction rating out of any manufacturer last year. Where's MB on that list? oh, sorry, WAY DOWN AT THE BOTTOM!!!! :P

As for power..have you DRIVEN a 760Li?? How about a 545i? didn't think so. Even the 745Li and i models will get the fuck up and run. Hell, the 330i gets on it pretty quick too.

Oh, i would also like to take another shot at the SBC units on the Mercs...

WHAT CRAP!! an electronic module taking care of ALL the braking duties?! No fucking thank you  and only a 5% mechanical failsafe?! And you feel comfortable with this?!

I own a BMW and so does most of my immediate family.
I assure you, MB service here is FAR better than BMWs.

albiet, Mercs have the best R1000's and lowest TGW of any luxury sedan (as well as ahead of BMW for 2003,2002) mercs also have quite a wider platform of use for thier lux AMG models. looking at this data of Jag, Lincoln, Cadillac, MB, and BMW... i believe its because of the wide use of the same engines in multiple lines.

some of the worst failures ive read about were computer failures, where MB is working towared having no mechanical connection between the driver, and the controls of the car... eventually, if say... ABS fails on such a system, you would loose all funtion of brakes, where any other car would just simply lock up the brakes, option may be broken, but the mechanical connection isnt severed to create loss of control, and possibly life.

I would buy a merc. Not a big fan of BMW's current design cues.

Well very interresting comments. In my country both offer excellent motor plans and waranty. Except that Merc's lasts until 120 000kms unlike beemer with 100000km.
Dont get me wrong I have 3 brands in my garages. MINI wich I love, then Benz and Beemers. When i needed a luxary saloon my choice was 760li or S600l. The Merc was much smoother yet lightning quick compared to the BM. {the S600l is a company car}

I got my wife the 5 series last week, ugly design but good car. Only problem is that darn I drive. Just to get the climate control to work we had to pull over and fiddle.

I am glad to hear that BM will bring out more models that have true power but the sad thing is that they will all probaly SMG. SMG sucks compared to VW's DSG. What is going on at beemer, even VW is producing better components.

WOW that was alot of text, sorry lads
