Nick Heidfeld was on Monday named as a Williams race driver after seeing off the challenge of Antonio Pizzonia.
On Monday some 200 guests and media representatives waited in the ‘Air Nostrum’, at Valencia's airport, to catch not only their first glimpse of Williams' 2005 car, the FW27, but also to hear the long awaited announcement.

"We have decided, at the last minute, that Nick Heidfeld would be the team's regular driver," said team boss Frank Williams, who also admitted that it "wasn’t an easy decision to make."

"There was little to choose between the two of them, and we were in the fortunate position to be able to choose between two drivers who would be a credit to any Formula One team."

"Ultimately, however, it is Nick who has got our vote, but I am delighted that we have strength in depth with Antonio taking up the position of official test and reserve driver."

Heidfeld, who drove for Jordan in 2004, was delighted to hear that he had been chosen to partner Mark Webber.

"I really wanted this job. Driving for Williams is the greatest opportunity of my career," the German said.

"I will do everything I can to show that I deserve this place and I’m counting the days to the first grand prix."

Heidfeld also had some words of commiseration for Pizzonia: "‘Racing' against Antonio was a lot of fun. He’s a great team-mate."

"I respect him and I would also have taken on the job of test driver."

I'm really happy that they've chosen Nick, I'm sure he will do great! what do you guys think about him?

i'm feeling a little nervous about williams chances this year :? Granted Weber and Heidfeld are decent drivers, i'm just not sure if their skills are up there enough to keep BMW at the top of the grid. Ralf's and Juan's shoes are going to be mighty hard to fill. Hopefully all goes well for Williams and Frank will not regret the decision.

I didn't like the Heidfeld choice....
I dunno, he hasn't done anything special yet...maybe this year? Who knows?
Anyway, i dunno, he doesn't seem right...

Hopefully Heidfeld will b able to rack up a few points. As long as things get pretty competitive, I'll b a happy fan.

i think the issue is more with the car rather than the driver. Even micheal cant win in a minardi. Granted in a williams, he would do much better, but even then the car was still inferior in many aspects to his ferrari. If williams provides a decent car to their new drivers, im sure they will do very well this year.

yeah I also think that the car is the issue.. Nick and Marc are both very good drivers and the BMW engine will be fabulous again so it's up to williams to build finally a good car! fortunately they don't have any weird stuff on the car like on the fw26 last year...
