The Merc G-wagon will be replaced in begin 2006 by the new G-wagon, G-class (X164). Reports say it won't be built by Magna-Steyr in Austria, but in Tuscaloosa, Alabama USA, so it can share platform and drivetrain easily with the new M-class (W164) and upcoming R-class (W251).

And here are some spy shots (it doesn't look good compared to the current G):

Thanks for the spy pics. Well it was about time to replace a car that is about
25 years in production but to replace a car that is being in the production for
the last 25 years, they must produce something special and from those pics
it doesn't look that they are going to achieve that! Let's wait and see 8)

I dont see any sense replacing the G class either once the car is in an excelent shape, the G55 gives a lot of prestige to the G class and so on, its like replacing the other mythical SUV, the defender; i dont believe the replacement of it till the new vehicle is launched in some official event

On the internet

It are definitely not spy pics of the new M-class (W164), since the shape of that one looks different (spy shot and official pic added below). Maybe they could be spy pics of the MLX but rumours say that this project has been cancelled.

spy shot of M-Class (W164) and G-Class (X164) together:

It seems that the new vehicle will be a direct rival of the current range rover, the scalade...and once merc launches this kind of SUV i wont be surprised if BMW launches a X7 as well......on the other hand i dont see any replacement of the current G class since there is no resemblance between the current G and the supposedly future G class

Another bad move by Mercedes... I hope the project gets canned until they can find a decent designer who could pull off a "Range Rover" evolution on the design.

Shoot, not an improvement IMO. They're killing the classic lines - a mistake they should have learned from their competition (ahem, bimmer). Looks much more road friendly, and more M-ish - not the right impression the top of the line, age-old, battle tested merc SUV offroader wants to give.

Agreed, the G was a classic, you cant ruin all its heritage and make it into a beefier plastic M class. Hopefully it still is a great 4x4, doubt it though.

current G class is a classic, most likely its replacement is going to fail at achieving such a status; yes, it does look like a larger M class clone

What the fuck? They not only want to kill that beautiful, timeless, shape but they also want to build it in Hickville, USA? So it's gonna look like a Jeep Cherokee and it's gonna have shitty build quality, similar to that of the American-built M-Klasse. :x Seeing that the G-Wagen is really the only 4X4/SUV I like, this makes me angry. Also, I'm pretty sure the Russian Mafia will not be pleased with the girly look of the new G-Wagen.

Yuck!!!!! Mercedes used to be elegant looking and had excellent build quality, that all went to hell when they start making the M-Class.

Weak. . . it looks like another "civilized" off-roader now. Should've kept it rugged like the current one, aka Hummer H1 style.

The G class is a classic from 25 years...

The G-class along with the SL are the only MB I currently respect and love.. But It looks like in the near future that the SL will be the only MB I respect.... The G-Class is something very very very prestigious IMO.. The people who buy the G glass don't buy it because it got seating for 7 they buy it because it looks good and reminds them of the old days.... Land Rover.. That's that a G-Class to me.. A landrover with an MB badge and a lot more luxuary not that their is something wrong with that.. If I had the money I would get my self a G55..but not this new one..

Are you sure this is the new G-Wagon? Looks a lot like the M class and I'm too lazy to actually compare. LOL If it does happen to be the G then I have to say I'm disappointed with the new design. I always thought of the G as a more aggressive SUV and set apart from the ML...I guess wrong now.

Not my style, the end of an era. Oh well it had to happen, pity it looks all soft and bland just like all the recent MB's.

I believe it's the M-class, G-wagon has never looked that way. So why make the change now.

OMG, if this IS the new G wagon, I think that Mercedes have just killed
their best looking car. That shape was timeless. Tis car will be forgotten before it will even be made....

I hope this is something else....

They forget to put Hyundai badge on it, that will be the best move to make it look really good. The G-Class in its current form can not be redesigned like this. It is great classic and people are buying it for that reason. I love the G55 AMG, best off-roader available. This is just looking so ugly as Porsche Cayenne.

Meh, in Ukraine national security drove G-wagons, I dont see them in this...

The G-wagon was the perfect car for blokes with shaved heads and MP5s.

I still see some speculations, that this is not the new G-Class, but larger version of M-Class. If this is really not the new G-Class, then I bet, that Mercedes is happy about fooling so many people, becouse fans of current G-Class will now run to dealers and order it. And this can boost sales of G-Class. I am still optimistic and believe, that it is not the new G-Class. :)

I also think that it is the next G-calss and I prefer the current one :?

It's too different from the current one... they should have kept the essence of the original... these one looks too much like the new ML.

I agree...I'm not a huge fan of the G overall, but I think it looks exactly the way it should look, given its history and capabilities...they're turning it into just another one of those expensive, ugly, gas-guzzling gaudy SUVs that rich people will buy for running errands.
