Just your vote (PICK ONLY ONE) and then your opinion why. I will do my part by not correcting anybody who thinks something they recall is fact.
Which one of these?
Porsche
BMW
Mercedes-Benz
AUDI
Volkswagen

In my family there is a BMW. I am a huge fan of the Bavarians. The reason is quite simple. BMW has the unique ability to successfully combine sportivness, luxury, high quality. It produces amazing SPORT/LUXURY cars.
Bayerishce Motoren Werke for me. :wink:

Actually I have a semi-realistic dream about getting a Porsche 944 in the not too far future. Among the pros are driving pleasure, some practicality, price, good old german build quality. The biggest cons are expensive insurance and the challenge of driving a RWD sport car in the norwegian winter.

Porsche gets my vote. Even though I really dont like the Cayenne(sorry St-Anger), Porsche is the best sports car maker in germany.
btw this should have been a poll
Actually, the reason why I didn't make it into a poll, was so that we could score each brand accordingly, like a race.
Number 1 vote counts as 5 points
Number 2 vote counts as 4
Number 3 equals 3
Number 4 vote is a 2
and last counts as 1 point
Meaning if you picked porsche, then merc, then bmw, your vote would add +5 to Porsche's tally, +4 to MB, and then +3 to the men from Munich.
So far, as of this posting, this is the tally:
BMW = 44
Porsche = 39
AUDI = 23
Volkswagen = 7
Mercedes = 4
Let the race begin! :)
::EDIT:: Somebody posted before me as I was doing the calculations. Here is the tally, including my vote.

My pick is for BMW, to me it is the best blend between sport and function. with an m5 m3 I can take the car on saturday to a track day and then on sunday can put me my wife and three kids in it and go to church

It all depends what the fuck you want in a car. And different companies have better cars in different sections. From all of them I love Mercedes the most, then Porsche, then BMW then Audi then VW.

The reason is simple, because Audi AG is always "Vorsprung durch Technik". You have to simply watch his success in motorsport history to convince you. :wink:
Grand Prix era (Auto-Union)
Rally Sport
Pikes Peak
TransAm/IMSA
Super Touring Cars
DTM
Le Mans
My second choice is Porsche AG, you can see why : http://img153.exs.cx/img153/9547/audirs24id.gif

best in Germany? well the numbers would say that VW is, since its the most sold car in Germany. :wink:
mmm thats quite an un-fair comparison...VW depending on model and spec can be bought for a relativly cheap price,also they are built in the masses where as Porsche only sells there cars in a tough niche market and specialize in producing sports cars, (apart for the Cayenne) which are expensive and exclusive (some)...
But back to your question, i would take a Porsche... 8) ...I honestly belive their one of the most engineered and well built cars money can buy...remember the 911 has been in there line up for 40 years! Audi comes second, i love there look and their quality...plus there a great alternative to the "common" and weird BMW range of late.... :wink:

I'd pick a Porsche anyday. BMW's here in Poland are driven either by snobs or riceboys who tune 15 year old cars. A nice Porsche 911 Carrera 4S would suit me perfectly.

depends on a specific model, but I'd take BMW M5. But if i lived in germany and could afford, i'd take Carrera GT ofcource..
Right...
My father has had the pleasure to own a S6, an A8, a Porsche 993, a BMW 320i, a BMW 535i, a BMW328i, a BMW325i and currently owns a BMW 540i, while my mom drives an A3
so in a passenger's point of view my list goes
BMW
Porsche
Audi
VW
Mercs
Hope i could help you choose on behalf of your passengers, since i can't legally drive...

Mercedes, they have always been my fav Germany car maker. Were else you gona get a 600hp+ Large body sedan, that handles just as good as an M3 but just a lil better then a M5, and it weighs over 2 tons.

Tally as of now:
Porsche jumps ahead with 75 points total,
BMW takes second with 63,
Audi takes the final podium spot with 40,
Mercedes trails at 17,
Volkswagen chugs in last at 14.

If I had the money to buy one right now, this is the way I'd probably go
1. Porsche
2. Audi
3. BMW
4. Mercedes
5. VW
Of course it would vary depending on which model of car for each brand was considered for purchase...

I think it would be Mercedes for me since i can“t imagine a better looking car like the current SL. Second is Audi cause my father has one and it is very well made.

Trabant ofcourse! why isn't that in the list???
no seriously i'd take porsche over all the others a billion times, beautiful cars, beautiful history (also in racing) and when i think of Porsche i just get a warm fuzzy feeling (maybe its my wet pants evry time i see a porsche in my head :lol: )
When i was a kid i used to walk past a red 964 Turbo evrytime on the way to school, and every single day i'd walk to the car and have a look through the window...car nostalgia for me :D

Ok, first of all im new to the JW community, big time car enthusiast and top gear/5th gear follower. This is my first post but I plan on becoming a regular.
Anyway, my vote would have to go to vw and porsche. I love VW for driving around with reckless abandon, I guess I'm a bit bias since I have one, a GTI 1.8t. But really, it's great, it comes standard with a lot of features, practical, fast, fun to drive. And its a big plus that I can smoke those tricked out Hondas that that are all over the place here in southern california, and I don't carry a target for the cops.
And well Porsche, what can I say, my next car; being like steve mcqueen or James dean. Plus the car can be driven anywhere, honestly in real life the streets are not smooth like a racetrack and the 911 carrera is the ideal car.
After that BMW>Audi (but not by much)
Audi>Mercedes(Mercs are good for show with the shiny rims but the Audis have more go, the Audi RS6 in a tunnel sounds incredible) :shock:

VWI dont think you can compare a VW with a Porsche,there are actually some people in the forum who would choose a VW over a porsche,i dont want to critisice but i cant help it and i will say that it sounds funny to me.Ok some people might be a bit biased because they own a car of a particular brand but VW over BMW or Porsche or MB,i just can't get it.
I like BMWs but i would choose a porsche if i wanted a real sports car.
My ranking:
BMW
Porsche
Mercedes-Benz
Audi
VW
I prefer BMW because they manage to give you a feeling of sportiness and luxury that no other brand can match.Also who can resist these M models that carry one of the most technically advanced engines in the world.

aight, just in a slightly pedantic mood, so taking it literally, which BRAND would i buy? (and since it's a hypothetical q, i'm imagining i have the billions of dollars to do so)
well, there's porsche, bmw, merc (and chrysler) and vw=audi anyway.
i'd take vw/audi. cuz they got lamborghini, bentley, bugatti under their belts. from a profit standpoint, porsche does very well historically. bimmer is hitting some road bumps, and merc is falling towards the gutters.

I'd easily go for the Porsche as it's a drivers car, has the best handling cars out of the lot. As for BMW's I like the M3 and M3CSL but I'm getting slightly bored of the other models, they can be found almost everywhere, even here in Poland. AS for Mecs...bad build quality. VW makes cars which belong to lower classes then it's rivals. But they had a good shot at making a limo with the Phaeton, I still claim it has the best interior out of all the cars on the road today. Audi- S models rock!!
Porsche
Bimmer
Audi

VW
Mercs
Audi I'd have to say, I wouldn't want to drive anything other than AWD, yeah may not be as quick as a Porsche but its a lot easier to live with plus Porsche don't have estates!
Porsche will stab me in the back on twisties (wet, leaves, bumps and steep gradients), though the only thing that I couldn't get away from on a dry twisty track was a Porsche! Also I would dread driving it in the rain. Merc and BMW I repect but I'm not a luxury type of guy. VW my sister drives a VW :lol:

BMW. Not ridiculously expensive... great luxury, nice engines, very respectable company... not to mention BMW is the hear of the best car in the world (McLaren F1)

the post ask to choose out of these 5, so
1. Porsche (way ahead) don't need add a reason
2. Audi because of the AWD cars like RS4 or RS6 Avant
3. Mercedes
4. VW
5. BMW don't like them
but there are other cars like the Maybach, which would be way ahead of the Merc or BMW.

If I would go for existing models, then Audi would be my pick. BMW lost their character in the 90's. They don't make them like they used to be... Merc - well, I like their coupes and cabrios, so for that kind of car I would pick a Merc (hate TT!).
So Audi gets most points for their S and RS series. A wolf in a sheep skin :P And with RS2 you would get a Porsche with Audi styling :P
VW - once again, they were best in 70s with GTI Mk1 and Scirocco. Although, in my dream garage, I would like to have a Corrado G60....

I think BMW makes the best cars in Germany and Austria !! :lol:

01-25-2005, 01:07 PM
My choice:
1. Porsche: for everything from winter beater(money no option and a fleet of cars at my disposal with a full time mechanic servicing all my beauties) to SUV
Winter Beater: Porsche 911 AWD Turbo
SUV(for the real messy days and nights out with friends): Porsche Cayenne Turbo
2. BMW- basically I choose them as second because of thier M cars. I would have the M5, M3 and M coupe in my garage.
3. Mercedes- AMG cars only. None of the other benz's really do it for me, and i would choose an A4 over a C class anyday.
4. Audi: great cars, but not as good as BMW IMO.
5. VW: good cars of course, but not even in the same league as its german competitors, yet :wink:

BMW - especially because of the M's...

1) Mercedes-(AMG)No contest, best combination of luxury and performance
2) Porsche-Really great sport cars!!
3) BMW-Good cars, especially the m's ones
4) Audi
5) VW

The AMG's may have more power, but BMW build the better cars!

First: Porsche way ahead, for circuit (GT3,...) and for everyday use (more expensive that way, so you need the money);
Second: Audi and BMW because it's good cars, performing well but VERY differents;
Fourth: VW, because I really don't like the fifth;
Fifth: Merc, because I don't like it and it is the only reason (emotional maybe... :| )

My favorite german car brand is Porsche. Beautiful cars, to drive every day!
Well this is how i feel.
Porsche
BMW
Mercedes
Maybach
SMART
OPEL is german right?
Then maybe AUDI and Volkswagen. :lol:
This is how my real list would go
Sports Car - Porsche 911 Turbo/GT2
Track Car- Porsche 911 GT3
Everyday Commute car non sedan BMW M6/M3
Everyday Commute Car Sedan = MB AMG E55
Fun Weekend Sedan Car BMW M5
Cruising car = SL600 or 65 Black, on Black, with the CL chrome with the MB Logo Blacked out.

Porsche (i don't think it needs an explanation)
BMW (best mix of SPORT, MB has not sport, and luxury)
Audi (probably the most well built cars)
VW (i own one, and they own porsche)
MB (good for going in a straight line)

Porsche - My favourite Brand, Sports cars with quality
BMW - Very usable car, and yet, a good sports car
Audi - Very nice, but only available in fwd or 4wd
VW - Like them, well built cars
Mercedes - Good quality cars, good for going on a straight line, or for showing off!

Like everyone i'd be torn between a Porsche and a BMW, depends on what i wanted. All the modern cars to come out of these two firms are incredible, and i have utmost respect for Porsche for managing to make the 911, a car that is fundamentally badly laid-out, into the amazing car that it is today. The extreme porsches look incredible, like the CGT and the GT3 RS.
After that, i'd have to go with Audi (the RS6 is a monster after all). VW and Merc do very little for me!
