I'll have to think about this. I'm a little bit afraid of torrents seeing how they have
been in the news quite a bit lately. Does anyone have any idea as to the safety of
using torrents.

There really trying to stop all the swapping of copywritten material but
if you stick to the non copywritten material you should be ok. They seem
to be haven quite a hard time stopping it though, there's something with
the way it works that makes it hard to disrupt. But I'm not sure if it is
harder for them to catch you when you're using a torrent as apposed to
Limewire or Kazaa.
Eventually I think that the file swappers are going to win. :wink:

they are not safe.. once you are connected to the tracker and part fo the 'swarm' anyone else who is connected to it can see your ip.. if its the riaa/mpaa then yuo are screwed

But if you have a dynamic IP you don't have that problem wright?
What if you reloggin right after your done with the download?

wrong.. if the mpaa/riaa want your ass all they have to do is contact your isp and ask who was conncted with that ip at such and such a time, and they will have a record
the good news is that unless you are one of the major uploaders then probably the worst that will happen if they do catch yuo is you will receive a cease and desist order under the DMCA telling you to remove said file immediately and no further action will be taken..
unless your isp is very strict in which case they could terminate your account and then you have no internet -> but this is probably quite unlikely, more likely they will just send you a copy of the DMCA notice they recieved

thanks for the heads up on this Dan, I DL a hell of a lot of English stuff from UKNova, TV shows. I am not sure if it is illegal for me on the basis of 'for personal use' as I have a UK TV License at my UK residence (which I am not getting the benefit of living here, obviously)

Torrentbits got banned also. Because of that, I found a list of alternate sites with torrent files. Due to the powerfull 56k connection I have... I have not tested them out. But feel free to do so yourself...
