Help please.

My laptop came with an OEM version of Windows XP Pro. If I install it with my internet connected, my computer will be attacked (porn advertisement, hotbars, and create folders in my computer) right after the installation due to the file lsass.exe. I solved the problem by installing windows update and Norton anti-virus.

Now the problem is the attacker created several folders not only on my computer but also my portable harddrive. I tried many many methods to delete the damn folders, but they just don't work. I can't format my portable hd because it has around 140 GB of important files (including TG) in it.

Anyone know how to delete an empty folder? or using any programs?

I tried many of them but none of them work.

Thanks.

Not sure the exact reason but you can check for:

1. Hidden files in folder
2. Certain program(s) opening the folder (i.e. in use)
3. Invalid characters in the folder name
4. Folder has "read-only" enabled in its properties

Good luck!

when a goddamn program, etc. doesn't let me delete a file or directory, I go to the ms command prompt and delete all by the old way...

There is a program that you can try looking for, it operates when you boot up (a little bit frightening actually), but seems to work pretty damned well. It's called, Moveonboot, and for files that inexplicably become undeletable it's been my favorite. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,23174,00.asp

try bootup in safe mode and remove the folder or try tigerx's idea.

try also look into ur registry and see if any program runs during startup.

Local Machine --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows --> Current Version --> Run

Try the bootup in safe mode first. And delete. That will usually do it.

Bugger man heres what i'd do.
Better to be safe than sorry, i bet theres remnants of virus left scattered in C drive. I'd also get your files backed up. Buy an external dvd bruner or external harddrive or an ipod.

In run type 'msconfig' and see whats running on start up then get rid of things that don't belong you can easily tell by their directory, uncheck what doesn't belong save changes and restart. see if its a little or all better. Also do manual checking in c drive temp folders and system 32 and see if any of the programs with similar names to what you stopped starting up or same names are in there and get rid of them. Make sure you have the show hidden folders option enabled. Be very very careful not to delete important files as one deleted file can mean you have to reinstall windows. Seeing as its a laptop get it next to a computer with internet connection and go to symantec.com and in their search box type the name of all suss files and make sure they are actually the problem and not some windows file. Also restart it in safe mode to do any delations after you did the regedit thing and run norton and adaware. it will be painfully slow but it should work.

My 2c.
