These dumbasses have ruined a Porsche! Dr. Ing. F Porsche would roll in his grave is he saw that 5.7 L supercharged V8 in one of his cars!

Did you guys read the site at all?
Why an LS1 in a Porsche 911?
I test drove a friends 2000 Corvette and I was very impressed.
I could not believe the quiet horse power. My friend could not believe
he could impress me because I also own a 1970 454 LS5 Corvette.
I told him his Corvette would run cirlces around my Vette. "I still
don't think he believed me". Oh well, .... I decided to go with the
LS1 because it is lighter than my stock 911 motor and about twice the
horse power.
Some of the other motivating factors:
The 1980 Porsche SC engine is 178 hp @ 5600 rpm and the torque range is 175 ft/lbs @ 4200rpm.
Top speed with stock 1980 porsche engine 139 mph. with 3.88 rear end gears.
The LS1 Corvette engine is 350 cubic inches, 345 hp @ 5600 rpm, and have a torque range of 350 lb/ft.
@ 4400rpm. The LS1 Corvette engine (equiped with a supercharger) will enable me to go 184 mph in fourth
gear, however with no roll cage I limited myself to going 155mph. with a 240lb. witness in the passenger
seat. Sorry I have not went to fifth gear yet, which is capable of a top speed of 234 mph.
Quarter mile times HIGH TO MID 11 seconds. Not bad for a daily driver, The quarter mile time ran thus far
(11.94sec at 114) mph. was done with a conservative take off at the starting line because of the weak
stock axles. (refer to my Custom page to see the actual quarter mile test and tune video of my first
successful pass using stock axles at Houston Raceway Park). I now have a set of re-engineered axles. I will
post my new quarter mile time in the near future.
I also was motivated by the experts who told me this conversion could not be done. I have the only V8 conversion
kit to date which does not require you to do any major modifications to the body of the vehicle.
I wouldn't have done it, but I think it's pretty cool. Lightweight and gobs of power is never a bad combination!
a heavy ass engine in an noutoriously tail heavy car sounds like disaster to me

from the looks of it Texans are pretty dumb. if you are going to replace the engine get a twin turbo porsche engine

And yet he says right on his site (and I posted it) that the Chevy block weighs less than the Porsche engine.

the LS1 is an all aluminum V8, its not as heavy as you would think. in fact a cast iron V8 block with aluminum heads weighs roughly the same as a L28, 2.8L straight six found in a Datsun 280Z, so the aluminum block with aluminum heads weighs even less than that six.
personally i like the fact that they did this, simply because its different. i dont know why some people dont like odd engine swaps. Carroll Shelby probably got shit for puttin a V8 in the AC, but then look what happened, the car kicked ass. big engine, small car = fast car.
ive been to quite a few Super Chevy shows and they always have at least one Porsche there with a V8 in it and they are very nice and very fast. not saying i would ever do it or own one but im glad the option is available to me.
you also have to consider budgets and the condition the car was originally in. ill confess that i didnt read everything on that site so im not sure what condition this car was in, but it was probably a lot cheaper to do this swap and get the substantial performance gain than it would have been if they opted to put a twin turbo Porsche 6 engine in it.
finally, i dont understand why this would upset anyone. its not your car, no one is forcing you to do this or buy this car, so what do you care? if the owner is happy with it then he made the right decision.

According to http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/ChevySmallBlockV8s/LS1.html , the LS1 is only 390lbs!
Also found a list of engine weights at http://www.team.net/sol/tech/engine.html for comparison:
Alfa Romeo SOHC V6 375
BMW M60 Small Six 388
Opel 2.8-3.0 CIH L6 395
Porsche 4.7 SOHC V8 574
Porsche 901 6 401
So the LS1 is pretty light for its displacement. Read an interesting conversation at http://www.pors-chev.com/pipermail/pors-chev/2003-April/000781.html
The guy basically complains about the LS1 being too light and upsetting the balance of the car
Whats wrong with putting a lighter, more powerful, cheaper engine in a car? I totally agree with what he did, I jus think he needs to go ahead and put a ford 9 inch rear end under it to top things off :)

Nice comparison, Alien. And about the car, it feels...weird...
The engine weight quoted for the LS1 is 390lb 'out of the crate', so you need to add the weight of the cooling system (radiator, hoses, expansion tank etc. and all of this full of coolant). Remember the 911 motor is air-cooled so it doesn't need any of this extra kit.
Also the Porsche motor is a flat six with a nice low centre of gravity. The Corvette motor is a relatively tall vee, and look at where he put the rad! Way up high above the engine in his Whale Tail. That can only have a bad influence on the handling.
BUT... reading his site it looks like the car is only used for show and drag-racing anyway so the only time it needs to turn a corner is manoeuvring in the parking lot.

Suppose it is different. I respect that, also, it must have been quite a pain in the arse to fit! But I would not have sone it. But then I would not have even thought about putting a corvette engine in a porsche.

Some good points, there.

I must agree with Joel....but then why make a Porsche a dragster? That's one of the reasons Dr. Ing. Porsche would roll in his grave: to make one of his great handling cars a dragster! Porsches were made for circuits or European roads (with bends).

ppl like that confuses me too badmihai.
some ppl think a v8 is the best option to make a car go quick that really had no provisions for that type of engine.
wouldn't it be easy to buy a car with a v8 already and improve on that?

i wont comment as i am the type of person who would put a zl1 in a golf kart just to prove that it could be done.

Why mess modifying a 178hp engine, when you can slap a 345hp engine in it. I think its a great sleeper. No one would suspect an older porsche to be that fast and sound that awesome.
