Ok sooo....just saw this movie and was a little confused about this:
Half way through the movie Peter Parker loses his "spider abilities" and then a little while later, he magically gains them back.
I wasn't clear on why he lost them in the 1st place, or what special event happened that allowed him to get them back.
Can someone please explain this to me.

in the comics, Peter's abilities and powers start fading inexplicably. this is supposed to take place years after he gets bit in the first place, they just accelerated the timeline a bit for the movie.
Dr. Conners helps Peter figure out why it's happening and to figure out a way to stabilize his powers. (in case you don't know, Conners also becomes the Lizard when one of his expiriments on regrowing lost limbs goes wrong)[how else do these characters come about? ]
So, Conners knows about Peter's identity and so does Harry, who i am thinking is going to appear in SM3 as Hobgoblin.
However, much much later, Peter loses his memory (not sure how) and discovers he was cloned. Not knowing who was who, Peter took the name of Ben Parker, and resumed as Spiderman, not realizing he was the real Parker. The powers begin to come and go again.
There was a MASSIVE crossover at this time with X-men, Spiderman, Cable and everyother mutant spin off Marvel had for the Onslaught series.
(damn i feel like a geek  )
hope that answers your question.

He lost his confidence.. or at least so goes the overly contrived setup.
psychological mumbo jumbo.

Yeah thanks, I think. It just kinda explains that there really is no reason for his sudden loss or regaining of his powers. Weird.

but it even started happening to his clone after he married and knocked up MJ. I haven't followed the comics in a few years, so i don't know what has been going on.

i had about 30-40 of them from '75-'76. i had the first appearance of the Punisher too, but the pages of all of them were yellow and torn. I sold them like 4 years ago.
