M3 CSL Donates Equipment to Create New M3 Coupe Competition Package Option

Already renowned for its performance and handling, the new Competition Package takes M3 performance to the razors edge. Every aspect of the M3 handling has been tweaked resulting in the best-handling M3 ever.

The wheels are 19-inch forged-alloy wheels with high-performance tires. They connect to a suspension that has been tuned specifically for the Competition Package. Turn-in is quicker with a more direct steering ratio which goes from 15.4:1 to 14.5:1.

The Dynamic Stability Control system includes a less intrusive M track mode, as on the M3 CSL, ensuring the security of DSC and spirited driving too. For inclement conditions the regular DSC mode remains. The brakes, also adopted from the M3 CSL, include compound and cross-drilled rotors. The front rotors have also been enlarged from 12.8 to 13.6 inches.

As the serious enthusiast would expect, the Competition Package is available in combination with the standard six-speed manual or the optional Sequential Manual Gearbox.

The interior enhancements of the package are subtle but purposeful. The Alcantara steering wheel and handbrake grip feel good to the touch. The addition of the steering wheel-mounted button for the DSC M track mode requires the deletion of the multi-function controls and cruise control. The Competition Package is available with all M3 Coupe interior and exterior color combinations. Two trim items are exclusive to the Competition Package. Special Competition Package aluminum trim is included on the interior. A new exterior color, Interlagos Blue, is offered only with this package.

The Competition Package will be available for 2005 M3 Coupes beginning with December 2004 production and it will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The price for the package will be $4,000.

How come that the power output is lower than in the "regular" M3, 333Bhp/343Bhp?

Well all these mods can be easily done in a race parts shop or even tuning shop, so if i had enough money to spend on a car like that, i would make the mods myself as it would cost cheaper and it would stay in my way.

I hate the wheels that came with the first E46 M3, and I love the CSL wheels so.... I love this version!! But a new M3 is coming. I would never buy an M3 right now..... 8)

This car should not be compared to CSL - the best-handling M3 is CSL and not this. A CSL will humilite this M3 at the track.

bye bye warranty! :D I like it... it's something in the middle between the CSL and the stock M3... the interior looks great, especially with that steering wheel... However, as someone has said... I think I would wait to buy the new one (M4?)... and that's the reason BMW is offering this kind of mods... to make the car more atractive now that the new one is almost on the road.

yeah..but at least me, i don´t really use warranty :D

if i have money and if its out of warranty, i go and pay in a shop to fix something 8)

If you have money, why to go down the cheaper road to save money? You make no sense :D

I guess is a good option for those countries like mine (though its a legal car) or the US who didnt recieve the CSL... though some car importers might be able to get one i still dont know of one who has (here in Mexico)... so owning an M3 and doing the mods doesnt convince me though its coming from the factory, but not having one and buying a new one... hmmm id think of it twice cause the new 3 series is coming next spring/summer, so it would look like and old model (for me). and the new M3 maybe in max 2 years.

Yet the larger cubic inch push rod V8's and V10's keep making more and more power... and having lower and lower emmisions.. :P

no, its because the US is retarded and won't let the CSL in..yet Puerto Rico, which is practically a state, gets to have it :P

which i don't get becasue they let Ferrari bring in the Enzo :? why Enzo and not CSL? who @#$%^& knows.

^^^Puerto Rico is a province not a state. The major differences between Puerto Rico and the 50 states are its local taxation system and exemption from internal revenue code, its lack of voting representation in either house of the U.S. Congress, the ineligibility of Puerto Ricans to vote in presidential elections, and its lack of assignation of some revenues reserved for the state.

But the most likely reason is crash test for not letting the CSL in

ok, someone who voids an e46 m3's warrenty is not so smart..

because bmw spent so much time on the engine, they forgot one thing, reliability.
the current i6 in the m3 is a big pos, although is wonderful when it works correctly. as for the rest of the car, great, as long as you DONT drive it like you wanna drive it (spirited)

this is comming from bmw tech's information on the engine, and my own personal expierences with the e46 m3 back in the day (2001)

dingo
12-05-2004, 04:11 AM
LMAO....."back in the day" is what old people say when they talk about their younger years, sounds stupid coming from a 20yo talking about driving an M3 when he was 17yo. Do you have any proof of these experiences, as anyone can say they drove an M3.
The M3 engine has won numerous awards, so I'd hardly call it a POS.

dingo
12-05-2004, 04:40 AM
^ not really, since I don't know you and can't take your word for it. It doesn't really bother me that much anyway, as long as he doesn't go all over the forum boasting about it without evidence.
The main point I care about is calling the M3 I6 a POS....would need some more facts to back that up. :)

I'm with Dingo on this one. My family, friends, acquaintances, and the members of my state's official BMW club all agree on the E46's reliability / durability. I do concur with you that the 2001 model, out of all the year models had the most problems, however our experience is they were all insignificant and non-engine / drive related. Also, keeping in mind we have a higher strung car in AUS than the US spec...
I'm sure you have had experiences that may have led you to your opinions, and i wouldn't say anything - except for when outlandish statements such as
because bmw spent so much time on the engine, they forgot one thing, reliability.

 :)

im allowed statements like that if i back them up.

from a dealer near me where a good friend works as a bmw tech, reported sees m3's comming in more than other bmw cars for HUGE repairs, like spun bearings etc etc. As everyone knows bmw tuned the engine ALMOST to its limit, if the engines are not properly broken in, they will suffer, as most seem to be doing in my example. I can easily confirm this through other dealers ive been through in the past or their owners if needed as to the reliability of the i-6. yes i do speak of when i was 17 back in the day because so much has changed sense then. and yes i did used to own a 2001 e46 m3, and it was in the dealer for reapirs OTHER than the i-6 almost every week (broken rear end, tail light, hid ballasts 3 seperate times) when compared to the car i had previously (98 540i), the m3 can be said as being VERY problematic.

in conclusion i stick to my outlandish comments to the engines reliability, and will defend it to the death. Remember i am speaking of driving the car as it was intended, not as some retard whos 17 etc etc, the major problems were NOT to early production 2001's as most claim either (there is truth in a problemed batch of the i6 in early production) but overall the engines are very touchy and will spin a bearing "if you look at it wrong"
