Well, I like many here am looking forward to the relase of said game. I am going to pre order my copy soon-ish. However, a phone call to a mate disturbed me slightly: =THIS COULD BE BS= He was saying that there is a possibility that Sony would consider re-writing it for the ps3??? He seems to be of the opinion that it may never come out on the ps2. I told him over the phone that I thought he was talking out of his arse......PLEASE tell me I am right!

Well, in Japan it is official for Dec 3rd and my US copy should arrive around the 10-15.. definitely it will be on PS2... PD always delays, but GT4 will be for sure on this platform.. maybe not online, not even in 2005, but for sure they won't dump all the work done to start from scratch for the PS3 :D

I agree, having looked about, GT4 is coming out when they say it is. GT5 is for the ps3.

Although, (this may be common knowledge to most...but not me) the pictures that we are being fed are not of actual screen shots. They are all enhanced graphics. The game will look good, but not quite that good....the ps2 does have its limits!

However, the ps3 on the other hand will be able to sustain graphics like:

It would be stupid to scap gt4 for ps2 and go for the ps3. The code could be written for the ps3 but all the model like the cars n tracks would just be lost. I can garentee its comin out for ps2.

I just pre-orderd mine on Friday, and it's supposed to arrive in early December.

This is also the first time that I've seen advertisements for GT4 in print media - Maxim, Stuff, FHM.

GT4 will help sell those PSTwo, so I highly doubt they will put it on PS3 and delayed it once again. PS has always known for its backwark compability, the PS3 will be able to play GT4.

My heart droped to my ass and then went back again when I read the topic..

And I don't think that is possible GT4 is designed for PS2 because everything is designed for it,... I mean month's and month's of preparation and in the last month they say delay it for PS3.. it's a bit hard to belive.

Why does everyone call it PStwo?
It's not called that. According to Sonystyle it's called the PS2 (70000)

November 09, 2004 - Three years in the making, and Gran Turismo 4 is finally done. Publisher Sony Computer Entertainment and developer Polyphony Digital held a party in Tokyo today to celebrate the completion of the game.

At the party, Polyphony president Kazunori Yamauchi gave out final stats for the game, including some staggering numbers. Some of these were announced before, but some of them weren't, so listen up! First, GT4 really is huge. The game makes use of a dual layered DVD, totaling, Yamauchi revealed, over nine gigabytes of data.
Where does all that data go? That's where the cars come into the picture. Licenses from 80 car makers throughout the world (but lacking car makers from India, we'll point out) are featured in GT4. Taking into account all cars, including concept cars, historical cars, race cars and cars from year 2005 and beyond, the game has over 700 total (we're sure Yamauchi knows the exact number, but he's just being shy). This includes, Yamauchi revealed today, the new BMW 3 Series, which makes its debut in the game prior to its 2005 real-life release.

Finally, some course news. The fifty courses from the game include a previously unrevealed one: the new Fuji Speedway '05 course, which is set to open (in real life) in April of 2005. There are still a number of courses that haven't been officially revealed, so it looks like we'll have to wait until we get the final version of the game to see what's in there.

All this should add up to the biggest driving experience ever. We'll have lots more leading up to the game's 12/3 Japanese release.

AFAIK most pirated console games are not just directly copied from the original dvd to a writeable one. There are aspects of it that are further compressed to save room (compress the movies further, compress sound to a lower quality, etc. etc.) there are always sacrafices made when you get pirated copies of software for the new consoles. Back in the days of PS1 it was so easy :(

I am assuming that the US and Canada are getting their copies about the same time, and the latest release date for us is Dec 14th. If the Japanese version has been completed, then all the US needs is the conversions from metric and Japanese to imperial and engrish. If the game gets delayed a little so that the conversions are correct (all of GT3's measurements were in metric for the US copy, and the torque figures were way off when the car was tuned), it will be okay with me.

November 17, 2004 - Gran Turismo 4 has just been hit with another delay in Japan. Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that the game, originally scheduled for 12/3 release throughout the island nation (even Okinawa!), will now arrive a few weeks later, on 12/28. This delay affects the game and all promotional packages associated with it, including the racing bundle and the limited edition Nike bundle.

As reason for the delay, SCE cited some fine tuning that still remains with the product. The company also pointed to the huge volume contained in the game, including the more than 700 cars and 90 courses included within (we thought it was 50 courses... but oh well).
This announcement came just after noon in Japan on 11/18, a few hours after working hours ended in America on 11/17. We'll have to check with SCE's American division tomorrow to see how this announcement affects the game's American release.

November 18, 2004 - There was worry in the Gran Turismo crowd last night. After we posted the story stating that the Japanese version of Gran Turismo 4 would be delayed in Japan until December 28 of this year, the letters started pouring in regarding its U.S. release date. Sure everyone knew that it was likely that GT4 would now slip into next year here in the States, but there was no confirmation of it.

There is now.

In a statement released by Sony Computer Entertainment America this morning, the U.S delay of Gran Turismo 4 was officially authenticated.

"The release of Gran Turismo 4, originally set for December 14th, 2004, will change to the first quarter of calendar year 2005," said Ron Eagle, Public Relations Manager, SCEA. "With Gran Turismo 4, the company is
committed to providing consumers with the most complete racing game built
to date. Natural challenges with finalizing all the key features and
localization issues across worldwide territories have led to the difficult
choice of pushing back the release date in order to ensure that Gran
Turismo 4 lives up to the exacting standards of the 36 million-plus fans
worldwide that have purchased previous versions of our best-selling
franchise."

Eagle continued, "The Gran Turismo series has helped to define car culture and its fans have come to expect superior attention to detail combined with revolutionary technology that delivers unmatched graphics, realistic car physics, and an authentic racing experience that exceeds any previous racing title. Sony Computer Entertainment America is steadfast in our commitment to producing a superior product and is confident that the launch of Gran Turismo 4 will set a new benchmark for all other racing games to follow. With the history of the franchise and high consumer anticipation, Gran Turismo 4 still serves as an important part in Sony Computer Entertainment America's upcoming first party lineup."

Sony just lost the battle with Microsoft.

The X-Box will now undoubtedly displace the PS2 going forward.

GT4 could have accounted for a number of hundreds of thousands if not millions of extra PS2 consoles being sold in December.

Many people would have replaced their ailing and aging PS2's with $150 replacements as they purchased the game as part of a "Christams present".

Parents (who account for most purchasers) are not driven by "the greatest driving game launch event etc etc etc" - they are driven by seasonal purchases.

This delay is going to cost Sony millions and millions and millions of dollars.

Think of all the extra X-Box hardware and software sales that have just been sent Microsoft's way this Christmas season.

People either buy in time for Christmas - or don't.

Very foolish business decision.

Its not just one or two months...not when they first promised to release it nearly 2 years ago...that is such bullshit, and only a retard would delay the game until after Christmas! How is it not fucking finished...Christmas is the most important time of year for selling games...and they've had 3+ years of time to work on this game, why isn't it finished!?! They are definitely going to hurt from this decision...

I am positive the January 6 date will get pushed back...:x and then that date will get pushed back...finish the game already Sony!

..until the PS3 - they will need a unique selling title, and it would be too soon after GT4 release to simply release GT5 for the PS3.

Sony just fucked themselves out of the console market and will never regain the lead the X-Box is gaining.

They will regret this choice - and it is going to go down alongside the ones such as IBM deciding that "too few PC's will be sold to bother securing the rights to the operating system - exactly how much money could Microsoft make anyway".. :)

I partially agree abou the GT saga and the mistake, but actually even if GT4 is a big seller, the PS2 doesn't really need it.. there is no single saga that is absolutely needed to keep the lead IMO... the games lineup is still way better for the Sony platform IMO :D

Not in the all important US market.

If you go to the store, you see rows and rows of X-Box titles.. and afar less PS2 titles.

Plus the aging hardware (PS2) needs a great game bundle to boost hardware sales... Sony does not have that for this Christmas.

All the latest and worthwhile titles are X-Box available so - so what is there to drive hardware sales?

:)

Walmart alone would have probably ordered a million extra PS2's just for the anticipated Christmas rush.

Now what would you use to entice shoppers to buy new hardware? Lower price? Without a killer game titles that won't happen.

I hate to say it and see it - but X-Box beat Sony at their own game.

Another case of "too little, too late".

As for hardware and look alone, I still think many ppl will buy that super sweet new slim PS2 even if there is no incredible bundle! it is damn cheap, it is WAY better looking than the Xbox wich is bigger than the average TV set :D

anyway.. time will tell :D and IMO, you need to have at least 2 consoles anyway, nobody said a PS2 owner can't buy an Xbox you know ;)

Hahah, RC...I wouldn't worry too much about the PS2. Not everyone buys games about car-racing, so its not like the whole market is going to quit supporting PS2...there is GTA:SA which I believe is one of the (if not the) fastest selling game in history, and that's PS2 only. I agree it was a really dumbass business decision, but they will need a lot more stupid business decisions for Microsoft to gain a lead.

Also...what are the sales figures for PS2 v X-Box? I'm pretty sure the PS2 has consistently out-sold the X-Box, even though the X-Box has better graphics, etc.

All the latest and worthwhile titles are X-Box available so - so what is there to drive hardware sales?

Like GTA:SA...oh wait, that's only on PS2... ;)

Let's not make this into a fan-boy argument (because I like both, Halo & Halo 2 kick ass)...but I think its a pretty far stretch to say this one delay will be Sony's downfall, it takes a bit more than that to bring down a console that has been this dominant. Microsoft is definitely getting some sales...but they are still far behind Sony.

RC45
11-23-2004, 03:46 PM
All it takes is the likes of Wal-Mart to pull the plug on GTA:SA to send that theory down.

I do not like the X-Box - but from a "need to purchase" angle - people are not simply relacing PS-2's with new hardware for no reason. It will be driven by a "bundle" purchase, and the GT3/PS2 bundle did volumes for PS2 sales.

A GT4/PS2 bundle could have done the same thing again... but alas they have missed the most important buying season - Christmas.

:)

And remember, earler in 2004 X-Box units were out selling PS2 units by about 1.5 to 1.

Returning to the topic...i have preordered GT4 wasy before last summer. firstly it was supposed to come out in early September but as you can figure out by now it hasn't. Then i received a letter saying that it would come out early december. Until two weeks ago when i checked on the website and amazingly notices that the date had been canceled and changed into status:"not know". When i went to the store to ask the salesman told me that sony has not yet pronounced a date after changing the original and that his guess would be around March! I hate that, its the one game i am willing to spend my money on even if that means that i wont have to go out for 2 weeks(not that i will need to if i am playing GT4).It is just stupid and really nerve racking,i cannot think of one good reason for Sony to be doing that except of imrpoving tha game itself.

By the way i would like to ask you guys what do you think of the Prologue's steering in comparison with GT3. My opinion is that it is far less responsive and it doesent provide you with all that feedaback on the steering wheel as GT3 did. For example you cannot drift anymore, in the prologue at least. You just push the tail out and then just have a warning "slap"on the other way of the road, if you persist you are spin out, otherwise you must have to be a good boy and put the tail of the car in a straight line.
