View Full Version : In which car(s) did you learn to drive?
Was chatting with gis tonight and showed him a pic of a driving school in my town, using a Renault Clio Sport 172 as learning car.. I was saying to him the school I attended when I was 18 had an Opel Astra 1.6 ...
I'm not sure driving schools are mandatory everywhere in the world, so your parent's car I guess is ok..
In effect I learned to drive in an Ape Piaggio when I was 13 or 14 I think.. it was the model with a wheel and normal pedal clutch, 125 cc...
Then I have to admit I drove more than once my parents' cars before I actually had my license..
So the cars in wich I learnt to drive:
Ape Piaggio 125 cc (car?!? LOL!)
Opel Vectra 2.0 (automatic bleargh)
Audi A4 2.8 quattro
Opel Astra 1.6 (school)
Opel Astra 1.6 Estate (mom)
That's all LOL

I learned to drive in a Toyota Corolla (with a 1.8 I think), unfortunately.. Most of the driving schools here use corolla, civic, protege (323) or focus. However, I've seen larger driving school(s) using mustangs.
1998 V70XC (Mom's)
1997 honda civic (Driving School)
1982 BMW 735i (Grandparents)
2000 BMW 528is (Dad's)
199? Dogdge Caravan (Friend's) (hehehe...we cracked the tranny case jumping it)

I drove in several cars with my dad before driving school.
Fiat Tempra 2.0
Fiat Uno 1.4
Volvo S40 2.0
The driving school had a VW Vento (Jetta for you Americans, probably a '96). It was a TDi and if there's anything I hate... O well, it was a good driving school and I passed the first time.
Those are the cars in which I learned to drive. Before my license, that is. After that you learn much more IMO.
the UK seems a lot different
at the age of 16 u can get your provisional license, which allows u to learn if u like with a person who has a driving license, but not many people i know of do that.they wait till 17,when 17,thats the official age to drive,u can then go out with anyone who has a valid drivers license BUT u have to get insurance to do it,so as u can imagine,it costs a LOT to do it.then u get lessons with a driving instructor, then when they feel that your ready they will enter u for the theory and then the actual test.
i drove 3 cars B4 i actually started learning with an instructor the cars bein
VW scirocco 1.6 and a 1.8
VW golf GTI 16v (got to 2nd gear, never turned the wheel and my dad said,ok,thats enough, dont know why  ,lol)
and then last of all was the saxo i drive now
but when i was with the instructor she tought me all the other stuff in a vauxhal corsa 1.2 16v

I had the most ghetto/mexican driving school ever. On my car on the side it said in spanish too, thats how ghetto it was. A damn pos 98 Corrola, where the gas pedal would get stuck, and id basically have to kick it to go, and it almost didnt make it up a hill. :(

Here in Australia i had teh idea that the S2000 would be to powerful for P plates, however i found out recently it wasnt. I have also heard this is because the power band is so high and and it doesnt kick in til about 6.5 grand.
On another topic, i dont know much about fiats. Are the y powerful i dont see manyin Australia and if i do tehy are very old. i heard that the company was going under and having to sell ferrari.

A few other cars in between that I had for secondary reasons (female partners) Lotus Elan SE / Bimmer 3 series cab / Porsche 993 tip-cab / Ferrari 355 Berlinetta / Mercedes 500 SL (still have) a few other bits and pieces (mostly bimmers and benz)

Jabba, how did you like the Esprit Turbo? Ive always liked Lotus', especially the turbo Esprit.
as for myself, ive been driving for quite a long time. i had a go-kart when i was younger which familiarized me with the concept. i drove my first real car when i was about 11-12. my father wanted me to help out more at our ranch so he made me pull the horses around and use the tractor quite a bit. it was our vacation home, i guess, and there werent many people living in the area so he was pretty relaxed with the keys. my first car was the nova i still have (had since i was 15, gonna be buried in it) ive had a few others since then, nothing really special, mostly hand downs. 85 Astro van, 78 Grand Marquis, Chevy Blazer, 80s civic. the only 2 cars ive ever bought, i still have the nova and a 01 A4. my family and our family friends share cars which each other so ive had the pleasure of driving a ton of different cars. i compiled a list not long ago and it came out to over 60 diff cars and i probably forgot a couple too.
